Heroic Public Benefit Corporation

Meet the Board: Michael Balchan (Orion is hunting with a Sacred Vow)

Published on May 1

Heroes!!

I’ve got a few more emails I plan to send as part of our Heroic Series A +1s including a quick look at Heroic Publishing and a deeper dive into Heroic Quests.

I repeat: My intention with these emails is two-fold…

  1. I’m excited to share our vision and plans for our Heroic Public Benefit Corporation with you and our community. 🙏
  2. I’m Gandalf knocking on hobbit hole doors (and whatever doors elves and dwarves have!) recruiting allies to join us as investors in our Series A. 🤓

(Thanks again! Join us!)

As you may recall, I’ve introduced you to two of our new board members: Marty Bicknell and Matt McCall.

If you haven’t watched my chat with Marty and his daily practices yet, I think you’ll love it. And, if you haven’t watched Matt’s take on why he believes in Heroic yet, I think you’ll love that too.

Watch Marty’s clip here. And Matt here.

Now…

Today it’s time for me to shine a spotlight on our beloved CEO, Michael Balchan.

If you’ve been even remotely following along, you know who Michael is.

But today I’ll give you a more thorough introduction.

His bio gives a pretty good overview of his background:

“A Harvard-trained behavioral economist, former securities trader, and world-class coach, Michael has played a critical role in Heroic’s success over the last five years—leading the creation of the Heroic Coach program, social training platform, Heroic Workshop Instructor Training, Heroic Performance Coaching, and doubling the business in 2024. An Ironman and CrossFit competitor with tattoos of both Areté and the Heroic mark, Michael embodies the Heroic brand and approaches every aspect of energy, work, and love with a fierce commitment to excellence. He leads the team, integrates the vision, and forges organizational excellence.”

But that doesn’t capture his extraordinarily Heroic Soul Force and ALL IN commitment to doing everything he can to activate his potential in service to something bigger than himself.

My tearful celebration of him at an event last year does a pretty good job of capturing my love and admiration of him.

You can watch that here:

But…

I think his reading of his Sacred Vow probably does the best job of capturing the essence of the man we are blessed to have leading our Public Benefit Corporation.

Check that out here:

As I was creating this, I thought it would be helpful to ask Marty and Matt what THEY think about Michael and his leadership/etc.

Here’s what Marty said:

"I’m excited to join the Heroic board for many reasons, but one of the biggest is the opportunity to work more closely with Michael Balchan. Through my journey in all three levels of the Coach program and my time in Elite, I felt like I already knew him—but getting to know Michael personally has only deepened my respect.

Videos and content only scratch the surface. Michael’s commitment, discipline, compassion, and care are not just performance traits—they’re who he is. What excites me most is the chance to engage with him not just as a Coach, but as a CEO. His leadership is grounded, mission-driven, and built on a deep integrity that inspires confidence. I believe wholeheartedly he is the right person to execute on this ambitious vision—and I can’t wait to support and learn alongside him.”

And here’s what Matt said:

“I’m so excited to not only be joining the board of Heroic, but also to be working with Michael as he steps into his new role as CEO of the company. Michael is the embodiment of the Heroic platform. He brings curiosity, zest, and discipline to everything he does. He has already taken the helm and has been bringing high impact structure, planning, process, focus and feedback into the company. He brings both fierce courage and a compassionate heart to leadership. He is humble, hungry, and an incredible learner. I am excited to be partnering with him on this next chapter.”

There’s a LOT MORE I can say, but I’ll leave it at that.

Alexandra and I feel extraordinarily blessed to have Michael’s support in fulfilling our Mission.

He has already contributed so much and I believe he will execute our strategy with the excellence we need to forge an antifragile business and fulfill our Mission.

And, in the process, over the years and decades ahead, I believe Michael will establish himself as a globally-recognized leader who powerfully embodies the wisdom, discipline, love, and courage our world needs at such a critical moment in history.

With tears in my eyes and a fierce commitment to doing everything in my power to help him actualize his potential as we make our vision a reality, I say…

Heroes unite.

Day 1. All in.

Let’s go.

P.S. Michael and I met almost exactly 8 years ago when he attended Hero Training 101.

At the end of the weekend, he came up to me and told me he wanted to help me create a multi-billion dollar business that changes the world.

Here are a couple pictures of that moment.

Here’s a picture of us at the first Coach graduation 5+ years ago.

And here’s a picture of us in Athens 5 months ago.

Imagine that man in another 5 years, and, Deo volente, 5 decades. 🙏

And… If you haven’t seen the +1 in which I share the moment I decided to make Michael our CEO, check it out here: The Rise of Orion.
