We're Dorit and David Nahmias. David grew up in the small southern Moroccan town of Taznakht watching his family brew the traditional Jewish alcoholic spirit Mahia. Opening a distillery was always a dream of his, and when we both lost our jobs during the 2008 Recession, we decided to go for it. We officially opened Nahmias Et Fils Distillery in 2012.
We have two primary product categories. First is our Mahia, made from 100% California figs, flavored only with a touch of anise. The second is our Legs Diamond Whiskey line which initially consisted of 100% Rye Whiskey, that we launched at the same time as Mahia. At end of 2018, we extended the Legs Diamond line to include bourbon and "Spirit of Yonkers" a distilled beer (using beer from neighbors at Yonkers Brewery). Both the rye and bourbon whiskies are made from locally sourced grains.
We knew we had to educate consumers about Mahia, but we also wanted to make a product that people were familiar with.
We started selling by going door to door, and now we're in around 175, restaurants, and liquor stores across the country. We did this without a paid salesforce.
