Today at Terrafugia: Steering System Calibration

One of the most important components in the development of the Transition® is the steering subsystem. This week, our engineers had the hood open on our prototype vehicle in order to recalibrate the steering system for the conforming prototype, D4. In an effort to reduce drag while in flight, the steering tie rods are being adjusted slightly in order to bring them in line with the upper arm of the suspension system. This adjustment requires slight modifications in the angles and lengths of the joints connecting the steering wheel to the tires, but will significantly reduce the drag from the combined steering/suspension system by bringing the two subsystems into closer alignment.  This new, perfected steering system arrangement is currently under design review, representing another exciting step on the path from our flying prototype to a complete conforming prototype of the Transition®.

The photo below, taken during one of our Transition® flight tests, shows the view of the steering wheel from the driver’s seat in the current prototype.
