Hello Shipmates,
We’ve been making waves at GMSO, and we’re excited to share our latest updates with you! Here’s a quick snapshot of what’s new:
🌐 New Website & Fleet Expansion – Our website is getting a full refresh! Check out our updated Fleet page to explore our growing lineup of partner vessels, ready to support research missions worldwide.

🚢 R/V Cosmo Getting Ready for Operations – GMSO’s first owned vessel, R/V Cosmo, is set to begin operations in Central America, including research in the Galápagos Islands. This is a major step forward in our mission. Join GMSO’s CEO, Commander G. Mark Miller for a quick tour of the boat here: https://youtube.com/shorts/s-3Kh6aNYp8

🌎 Deep-Sea Innovation with Caladan Oceanic – We’re partnering with Victor Vescovo’s Caladan Oceanic and the world-renowned architects at Espen Øino International to develop a fleet of advanced deep-ocean mapping vessels, pushing the boundaries of ocean exploration. Each ship will be equipped with cutting-edge technology, including semi-autonomous systems and a Kongsberg EM 124 full ocean depth multibeam sonar, enabling each vessel to map 1% of the ocean annually. This effort supports global efforts to better understand our planet’s seafloor and contribute to critical ocean research. The details are still Top Secret, but trust us—this is something to watch!

🌊 Chesapeake Bay Flag Expedition – Coming up in May 2025, we’re embarking on the Chesapeake Bay Explorer’s Club Flag Expedition with Dr. Sylvia Earle. This expedition will revisit the historic 1954 expedition, "One Hundred Hours Beneath the Chesapeake," to study how the Bay has changed over the past 70 years.
⚓ Reconnecting with Explorer Nico Vincent – A key member of the team that discovered the wreck of Ernest Shackleton’s Endurance in Antarctica, Nico is now exploring ways to utilize GMSO vessels for future deep-sea projects. Stay tuned for more updates.
We’re building momentum, and we couldn’t do it without you! Have questions or want to learn more? Reach out to us!
Thank you for your continued support!
Keep Exploring,
The GMSO Team
