Multiple sclerosis is a debilitating autoimmune disease that often strikes people in their early to middle years.  It affects more than 1,000,000 people in the US and around 500,000 in Europe. 

Sativex, a drug that is made up of 50% Delta-9 THC and 50% CBD, is approved in several countries but not the US for treating Multiple sclerosis.  The drug is delivered in an ethanolic solution into the oral mucosa below the tongue.  The treatment is both acute to the body and irritating to the oral mucosa.  Dosing is also high and frequent because of poor bioavailability.

 Aphios Pharma is developing a sustained release cannabinoid product for Multiple sclerosis using nanoparticles.  These nanoparticles will release cannabinoids over a longer period of time than current treatments, reducing dosing and increasing efficacy.
