"An ancient proverb shared with me in 1994 by one of my closest friends and mentor:
Four things come not back.
- 1. A spent arrow
- 2. A past life
- 3. A spoken word
- 4. A wasted opportunity
Twenty years ago, the 4th of these enduring truths reverberated in my head as I decisively took possession of my first of what later would be many Confederate motorcycles. As a working man of modest means and upbringing, $24,000.00 was an outrageous amount of money to spend on a bike, so it was a huge risk and commitment. But that’s what we as motorcyclists do, we take calculated risks, regularly, passionately. This one opportunity to own and ride this one and very unique bike was not wasted, as I confidently spent a very precious arrow. It was a bullseye, and became one of the most pivotal decisions in my life, as it lead directly to countless experiences, acquaintances, relationships, and exponentially more opportunities that followed. Likewise, I encourage all of my motorcycling brethren to not waste this opportunity to proudly own a foundational piece of Curtiss. As riders, not only do we accept risk, we welcome it, and rarely do we ever waste an opportunity. We spend our arrows, wisely, instinctively, calculatedly. And we wish for them not back, but instead hit bullseyes. Join us."
