The Indianapolis 500 is nothing like a typical motor sports race. It’s one of the biggest and most prestigious races in the world with more than 100 years of history, and drivers would do anything to add their names to the exclusive list of winners.

But the Indy 500 is also more than a race. At a minimum, it’s a week-long event leading up race day, and if we’re really honest, it consumes most of the month of May for drivers between practice and media appearances and qualifying and Bump Day and the parade.

And for the fans, the second biggest day of the whole spectacular extravaganza is Carb Day, which is Friday, May 24 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Originally known as Carburetion Day, it’s the final opportunity drivers and teams have to practice on the 2.5-mile oval, and back in the day, it was the last chance for teams to play with their carburetors before race day. And while practice is great, it’s only 90 minutes of the whole day, starting at 11:05 a.m. ET.

It’s a giant party celebrating the race. After practice for the Indy 500, there’s an Indy Lights race. Indy Lights is a developmental level of racing for the IndyCar Series, and at Carb Day on Friday, there is the Freedom 100, which is 40 laps, at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It’s a short but entertaining race, and it’s not the only competition.

There’s also the Indy 500 Pit Stop Challenge, which is exactly what it sounds like, and it’s so much fun. Participating teams are able to compete based on the top teams competing in the Indy 500, the best teams from the IndyCar Series season overall so far and the best pit stop performances this season. It’s set up as a single-elimination bracket as teams face off against each other, and the final round is a best-of-three test.

Fans pile into the grandstands to watch both events — things can get pretty rowdy, especially if the weather is great — and they’re basically just pregaming the rest of the day’s activities.

The Indy 500 itself features a concert/party/free-for-all on race day in an area of the infield near Turn 4 known as the Snake Pit. (It’s like a 21st century combination of Woodstock, Mardi Gras and the wildest tailgate you can imagine with electronic music, and it all starts at 7 a.m.)

But there are concerts on the stage on Carb Day too. This year, Kool & the Gang is up first, followed by Foreigner later in the evening.
