Karolina
Pliskova is coming off a three sets win over Yulia Putintseva that took 29 games to decide. In the victory, Pliskova won 68 percent of her first serve points and 33 percent of her second serve points. Pliskova won 56 percent of her total service points and converted on five of her 10 break points. Pliskova has found ways to win her first three matches, but she’s coming off a match in which she got nothing on her second serve, and she’s been broken a combined nine times this tournament. At some point Pliskova has to be sharper with her serve or it’s going to cost her a chance at a possible title. Pliskova hopes to make the semifinals of a Premier Mandatory for the fifth time in her career and the second time at the Miami Open. Pliskova has won eight of her last 10 matches on outdoor hard court.

Marketa Vondrousova is coming off a straight sets win over Tatjana Maria that took 19 games to decide. In the victory, Vondrousova won 66 percent of her first serve points and 55 percent of her second serve points. Vondrousova won 62 percent of her total service points and converted on five of her 10 break points. Vondrousova has won all eight sets this tournament and has produced a combined 21 breaks. While impressive, you have to wonder if nerves will eventually catch up to her, as Vondrousova has never come close to being on this stage before at just 19 years old. Vondrousova has one career win over a top-10 player, which came this year against Simona Halep in Indian Wells. Vondrousova hopes to make her first career semifinal appearance in a Premier Mandatory. Vondrousova has won eight of her last nine matches on outdoor hard court.

There’s no match history between these two players.

You have to consider Vondrousova in this match given that Pliskova has been shaky at best and could have easily lost to Putintseva. However, experience usually plays a roll once you get toward the business end of a big tournament, and that heavily favors Pliskova, somebody who has another gear she can reach and knows how to close the deal. A day off would also go a long way in terms of helping Pliskova recharge the batteries and tighten up her game.

Pliskova has to be the big favorite to win this match.
