Several different clear masks/respirators attempt to address various negative features (Figure 1). For example, the X-hood (Stuck Design, Singapore, Fig. 1b) is a lightweight, comfortable, and disposable face shield10, that provides a more comfortable wearing experience, with more breathing space. Unfortunately, the design is cumbersome, and the product is not reusable. A similar product, the ClearMask™ (Baltimore, MD, Fig. 1a) is a fully transparent, FDA-cleared, class II surgical clear mask, with full-face visibility that optimizes comfort and breathability, while providing assured protection. ClearMask also offers anti-fogging, and a transparent plastic barrier, allowing one to see each others’ facial expressions. However, this product is not reusable nor does it have effective filters. The manufacturer of the LEAF HEPA™ mask13,14 (Redcliffe Medical Devices, Southfield, MI) is facing a class-action lawsuit for false claims that its masks are FDA-approved.

The Aeri, (Amazfit, New Delhi, India, Fig. 1c), is designed to protect against viral diseases, as well as air pollution. It has a transparent design, made of an anti-fogging material, attaches a multi-mode ventilation fan to cool the face, and an Air Quality Index Although this type of mask functions as a respirator, it cannot be sterilized and reused, prompting researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to develop a new transparent and reusable soft silicone mask, the iMASC (N95 equivalent, Fig. 1e) The mask’s shape is similar to an N95, but is made of hard silicone rubber, with capacity for sterilizing after each use, and the dual filters, covering the mouth, can also be replaced after each use.  Unfortunately, the location and size of the filters on the mask obscures the view of the wearer’s mouth, negating the greatest benefit of clear masks, i.e., being able to see the mouth/face of the wearer.

The recent COVID-19 outbreak has positively impacted the growth of the face mask industry. An increase in the number of cases worldwide has compelled people to adopt the new normal of wearing masks in public places.

SEEUS95 Filter Material we have developed is the first N95 nonwoven material that is made from plants and is biodegradable. Most N95 and surgical masks are made from nonwoven polypropylene which is harmful to the environment and last 450 years in a landfill.
