We have not one, but TWO interim title fights headlining this show. The main event sees men’s featherweight champion Max Holloway move up to lightweight to rematch Dustin Poirier, seven years removed from when Holloway lost his UFC debut to Poirier. This time around it’s five-rounds and for the interim lightweight championship. The co-main features strikers Kelvin Gastelum and Israel Adesanya fighting for the interim middleweight belt, with the winner slated to fight Robert Whittaker. Holloway vs. Poirier 2 Live Fight
This post will cover the preliminary card.
The show kicks off on UFC Fight Pass (and ESPN+ for PPV purchasers) at approximately 6:15 PM ET with four fights. The card then moves to ESPN at 8 PM ET for four more bouts, then onto the main card at 10 PM ET. The full lineup and schedule follows. The main card will be covered in a separate post.
The interim lightweight title fight between UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway and lightweight contender Dustin Poirier later tonight (Sat., April 13, 2019) at UFC 236 live on ESPN+ PPV from inside State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia, will be sure to capture much attention from those in the 155-pound division.
Remember, Holloway is moving up to lightweight for the first time in his UFC career as he tries to avenge a 2012 submission loss to Poirier.
One fighter that is already boasting about the main event matchup tonight on ESPN+ PPV is none other than Conor McGregor, who holds victories over both “Blessed” and “Diamond” at the featherweight level. In fact, McGregor is the last fighter Holloway lost to before racking off 13-straight victories inside of the Octagon. As for Poirier, his 2014 TKO loss to McGregor forced him to move up to lightweight where he has turned in an impressive 8-1 (1 NC) record with six finishes.
McGregor, who recently announced his retirement from mixed martial arts (MMA), took to Twitter earlier today to talk about Holloway vs. Poirier 2 and give his official prediction:
This fight is a rematch from quite some time ago. It was all the way back at UFC 143 in 2012 that a then UFC debuting 4-0 Holloway met the 11-1 Poirier. Poirier took the win there in a short, but exciting fight. Seven years later, they meet again. And with champion Khabib Nurmagomedov suspended through July, the winner here will be declared an interim champion
Max Holloway’s current unbeaten streak is really remarkable. He started his UFC career going 3-3 and looking perfectly good but not exceptional (of course, with 2 of those losses coming to Poirier and Conor McGregor, time has been good to that early run). But then he just started winning and winning. He’s now approaching 6 years and 13 fights without a loss. Along the way he picked up the Featherweight title by defeating Jose Aldo, then impressively defended it Holloway vs. Poirier 2 Live Fight against Aldo and Ortega. He missed almost all of 2018 with some slightly weird health issues, but showed no signs of that when he returned in December. I’m not ready to crown him the greatest Featherweight of all time yet, but there’s no denying he’s something truly special right now. This is his first Lightweight fight since his pre-UFC days back in 2010/2011. Holloway vs. Poirier 2 Live Fight.
Dustin Poirier has a very similar path in many ways to Holloway’s. He’s also looked very good, but like the fighter that can’t quite get over the final hump, losing when he had big fights against the likes of Conor McGregor and Michael Johnson. But the 10 year veteran just keeps going and keeps improving. He walks in to this fight on an insane run of wins over former champ Pettis, all around violence machine Gaethje, and former champ Alvarez. Like Holloway, Poirier has evolved into a complete fighter, and one who seems to be at the absolute peak of his skills right now.
