
Stephen Steve) Mayer grew up in San Francisco and in fact his three children are fifth generation San Franciscans. He attended Riordan high school and has served Riordan as a Board member for over 30 years. He received his Bachelor degree in Business administration with an emphasize in marketing and accounting at UC Berkeley in 1976. He later received an MBA in Finance at UC Berkeley. He started his career at Coopers and Lybrand and stated there for ten years. He left in 1986 to co-found Burr Pilger & Mayer (BPM) a regional accounting firm. The firm started with five people and under Steve’s leadership as CEO grew to over 400 employees with offices throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. Steve left BPM at the end of 2012 and formed SD Mayer & Associates (SDM) with a small group of 5 employees. Following the game plan of BPM, SDM has grown to over 70 employees, four offices and serves it client with a full service offering of Assurance, Consulting, Wealth Management, Tax and Outsource accounting. Steve is an entrepreneur having started over 20 companies from accounting, wealth management, hospitality, food serves, banking, software and retail. He has proudly served on about 20 non profits throughout his career and has written three books. Two of the books are on financial planning, “Five Buckets, Four Shovels, A Beach and a Map- A Guide to Financial Security” which is about a simple approach to financial planning. After the book was published, people said he ought to write a similar one for young adults and people just starting their financial journey, so he wrote “Adulting 101-A Guide to personal Finance” and formed the Five Bucket Foundation who’s mission is to teach financial literacy to you people and underserved communities. The third book, “The toughest Guy I ever knew” was written to honor his dad. It is 15 short stories filled with humor, wit and wisdom on Steve’s business and life philosophy of which the lead story is about his dad. Always up for a challenge Steve continues going backpacking with family and friends on an annual trip for 47 consecutive years and has spent well over 365 nights in the wilderness. He likes doing things himself so he acted as the general contractor to build two homes. As Steve was turning 60, he did an ironman for the “hell of it”. Damn near killed him, but he is one of a few 60 year old’s who can profoundly claim the Ironman medal. He is married 30 years to Patty and they live in San Mateo, California and have three grown children.
