Roger Wodehouse's Androgymnasium

It's 1975 in London and Roger Wodehouse is the world's biggest glam rock star - until he risks everything to create a children's television programme.

The Story

In 1975, eccentric, gender-bending, larger-than-life glam rock star Roger Wodehouse is the biggest thing in British pop culture. As mercurial as he is ambitious, Roger consistently defies expectations with his creative endeavors, though somehow each is more successful than the last. And now he’s undertaking his most idiosyncratic project yet, an educational television program for children called Roger Wodehouse’s Androgymnasium.

Desperate for relevance, the BBC network is only too happy to produce the show. And the live premiere—filled with color, costumes, puppets, celebrity guests, letters of the alphabet, and rock-and-roll—is a triumphant spectacle that enraptures the UK’s child audience. The ratings spell a smash hit. Except Britain’s grown-ups are much less happy with the program, its volume, its vibrancy, its themes of self-expression, and Roger’s gender-fluid excess. Panicked, the BBC executives seek to rein in Roger and turn the show into something more staid and conventional. What follows is an epic battle of wills that pits the untameable Roger against the network and every conservative authority in the country. And Terence—Roger’s best friend, bandmate, and sidekick, who wants to both enable Roger’s vision and protect him from a world that’s not ready—is squeezed in between. Facing defeat or cancellation by the third episode, Roger decides to take desperate action…changing his life, his band, and the BBC forever.

Told in an immersive, faux documentary format, Roger Wodehouse’s Androgymnasium is the hilarious, musical, spectacular tale of a defiant artist and the people who love him taking on the world. It’s a story that asks who we really want helping children to learn, to be entertained, and to grow into the fullest versions of themselves.

The Music

Roger Wodehouse's Androgymnasium is driven by its soundtrack of original music. The tunes of the movie draw inspiration from the classic acts of the glam era - David Bowie, Brian Eno, T. Rex - as well as overlooked contributors like Jobriath. The lyrics are funny, while the melodies rock, encouraging audiences to stream the soundtrack as soon as they've finished the film.

Five Reasons to Invest in This Movie...

Any movie is a risk proposition, but ROGER WODEHOUSE’S ANDROGYMNASIUM has some advantages that will help the film to punch above its weight and increase our chances for commercial success:

  1. The movie is FUNNY! There is a need for films that really make people laugh in the marketplace. This will be one of them. Audiences want something fun and original. The recent Naked Gun is a perfect example of audiences desire for original comedy.
  2. The movie is VERY CASTABLE! We already have a number of top flight comedic talent attached to the cast. In addition, there are numerous compelling cameo roles that will be attractive to bigger comedic names who will only have to commit to small number of filming days but will give the film big name recognition.
  3. We can make this movie for a SMALL BUDGET, with BIG POTENTIAL for return. The vision for this film is loud, audacious, dynamic and colorful -- but its budget is very modest. We know how to make the money stretch onscreen. This project is a great opportunity to make an investment that can have an outsized impact.
  4. Great ORIGINAL SONGS - which have an exponential effect on expanding the audience. Catchy music is a way to hook fans before they’ve even heard of the film.
  5. The creative team is a WELL-HONED machine! As collaborators of over 15 years in the mediums of live comedy, music theatre and TV, there is a chemistry and shorthand that will allow the team to get so much more value out of every dollar spent.

Use of Funds

Our financing will go entirely towards the production of this feature film; locations, crew, equipment, cast, and post-production. In the event of coming in under budget, all remaining funds will roll entirely into the digital marketing of the film, getting the film to an even bigger audience and in turn, increasing the ROI.

How does the film make money?

Independent films at this scale require minimal investment; everyone on our production team is experienced at making modest budgets go far. This means that a small investment has a potential for very big reward.

Once the film is complete, we will use our relationships with festival programmers and major agencies like CAA, WME, and UTA to submit to the top film festivals (Sundance, SXSW, Tribeca, Cannes, etc). Then we will work with an agency to aggressively seek out a major US distributor (Neon, A24, Netflix, etc).

Our income will come from selling the project to a domestic distributor or major streamer as well as working with an international sales agent to cut deals with international distributors around the world. These deals will include various streams of income: theatrical box office, streaming, VOD, Blu-Ray, airline rights, etc. We will also seek out soundtrack deals as an additional stream of income that's not an option for most films.

How are the profits distributed?

Monies will be distributed to stakeholders according to the “waterfall” which will be detailed in our final Investment Agreement. Here is a general order of how this financial distribution will be structured:

  1. First, to any 3rd party expenses, fees, guild residuals, etc. that need to be taken off the top before revenue can be distributed to stakeholders.
  2. Next, to paying off any debt or deferred fees incurred by the production.
  3. Next, to equity investors until they have received 120% of their investment amount.
  4. Anything left over is considered "Net Profits," and is allocated on a pro rata, pari passu basis, with 50% going to the investors and the other 50% going to the creative team.

And in conclusion...

The creative team behind Roger Wodehouse's Androgymnasium has a long track record of using comedy and music to explore humanist topics in an unexpected way. With this project, we're delving into the nature of acceptance through the joyful, ludicrous, entertaining lens of Roger Wodehouse. What better vehicle to ask: can we radically reimagine how we teach children to love themselves?
