I have a simple philosophy in life. Getting your day off on the right foot starts with a great coffee and a great shave. Finding good coffee is easy, but I just never found a shave preparation I liked. So I developed my own. 'OSCAR' is my way of ensuring anyone can get a great shave without breaking the bank.

It started in Germany

We didn't start there though. We actually started with a German razor, which was pretty good. Before we decided to launch OSCAR and take on Dollar Shave Club, I visited the factory in Eisfeld, which used to be in the old East Germany.

While the razors were good, too many customers (including me) thought we could do better. And when the factory was acquired by Harry's, we decided to start looking for better options.

Auf wiedersehen 1.0 und hello 2.0

Eventually we came across our current American made razor. Ever since then our review ratings have increased.

We're still not the best, because Gillette tell you they are, but pretty bloody good. And ours cost less. A lott less.

American made gave us a better razor to compete with the first online player.

You deserve more than a dollar shave.

From its launch in 2012 to a $1 billion acquisition in 2016, Dollar Shave Club was the poster child for cheaper razors delivered to your door.

But at the end of 2023 a major announcement shocked the industry when Unilever announced the sale of Dollar Shave Club to private equity, presumably writing of most if not all of its $1 billion dollar acquisition.

Unfortunately for Unilever it seems the decision to manufacture its own razors in Israel has not worked out too well.

Clear proof that there's a lot more to making razors than meets the eye...

As a bootstrapped business it proved to me that if you have a great product customers will find you. So a lot of ex-DSC customers in Australia are now coming across to us.

And there's a lot more DSC customers in the US, so here we are.

So while our blades are made in America. What about our handle? It’s a precision-made design that customers love. And it's manufactured in China - like every other razor handle.

But with the current tariff war, we think it's high time to try and make everything in America.

Kickstarting US manufacturing

This isn’t a PR gimmick or a flag-waving rebrand. It’s about building something real — with the margins, control, and long-term upside to match.

We’re not building a giant factory. We don't need to. Instead we’re building a lean, high-margin production base to enable us to make millions of handles a year — and own the story end-to-end.

Here’s how

  • Phase 1 — launch our US website oscarshave.com to get our first 5,000 customers.
  • Phase 2 — Tool up and begin small-batch production on American soil. In Oklahoma.
  • Phase 3 — Launch our premium, American-made razor handle, so we can say all “Proudly Made in the USA”

Why Oklahoma?

Oklahoma is the ideal launchpad. It’s right in the middle of the country and offers low-cost operations, skilled labor, and potentially access to state incentives. And the people are nice too.

Crucially, our lead investor Dirk Spiers, built a multimillion-dollar manufacturing business there — Spiers New Technologies — and he’s backing us to do the same in grooming.

We’ll start small, outsource intelligently and grow with demand.

Why Formula 1?

Well from a young age, I had a fascination with cars and motorsport.

Born in the Netherlands in the swinging sixties, after a couple of years attempting to study economics, I decided to follow my dream of becoming a Formula One driver. 

My parents thought I'd gone mad.

With some small savings, I moved to the UK and bought a second-hand Formula Ford 1600 car. In fact the same model (RF81) that launched the late great Ayrton Senna’s racing career in Europe.

And with zero experience I joined the British Formula Ford single-seater series armed with a lot of ambition, determination and an embarrassingly small budget.

After a few years, I realised that with my late start and without wealthy parents, getting into Formula One was becoming an ever distant dream.

No regrets though, because it scratched my competitive itch.

Since then, I've been on an entrepreneurial journey, from selling automotive accessories by mailorder in the UK to skincare in Australia. 

To keep my love for motorsport alive, in between I published the Australian edition of 'F1 Racing', the world's best-selling Formula One magazine.

Launching Grand Epreuve as our own inhouse publication combines my passion entrepreneurship and Formula 1.

I take the same approach to business as I did racing. It's all about extracting the maximum performance from what you've got and remembering the race is not over until the flag drops.

I look forward to celebrating the next twenty years of Formula 1 with a special '100 Years of Formula 1' edition.

And in the meantime building OSCAR into the world's favorite shave brand.
