Invest in the future of education

Education is changing.

In the old paradigm, education, socialization and childcare unfolded in one place at one time with one set of resources.

Now families are drawing on the plethora of resources that have emerged in recent years to support their children's learning: 1-1 mastery-based learning, family involvement in education, learning apps, AI tutors curriculum and local programs. Many of these local classes are started by teachers who are leaving the classroom, stifled by the lack of creativity and economic mobility in their traditional classroom role. Families are also seeing the power of self-directed education and the critical importance of raising autodidacts in our changing world.

Parents aren’t just interested in modular learning—they’re already subscribing to Modulo.

  • Families are on weekly recurring subscriptions, and some have been using Modulo for years on the same plan.
  • Retention is strong—once parents see how Modulo removes the complexity of piecing together homeschooling, they stay.
  • Parents tell us: “I couldn’t do this without Modulo.”
  • Word-of-mouth growth is driving adoption. Many of our new users come from referrals, showing that families trust and recommend Modulo to others.

We call these modern homeschoolers "modular learners."

Modular learning landscape

Modular learners draw on a diverse array of in-person and online resources to optimize children's learning.

And they're experiencing phenomenal results. Kids are thriving, socially, emotionally and intellectually. It's no surprise that some of the most influential educators and entrepreneurs are choosing this route. Personalized education is more effective and it makes more sense.

Tech leaders and entrepreneurs understand that modular learning makes more sense for education.

Modular learning is a megatrend.

Homeschooling families are leading the way. Since 2019, the homeschooling population has tripled, with modern homeschoolers drawing on physical and online learning resources to help their children reach new heights: socially, emotionally and academically. Even if they're not homeschooling, most families are curating their children's education to some extent, whether that's taking afterschool classes, hiring a tutor or planning summer camp.

  • 5.5 Million US families homeschool. The homeschooling population has tripled since pre-pandemic levels. There are as many homeschoolers as kids enrolled in private school. (US Census Household Pulse Survey)
  • 15% of Black families are homeschooling. The Black homeschooling population has grown 5x since pre-pandemic levels. (US Census Household Pulse Survey)
  • The global tutoring market is growing 8.4% YoY and is predicted to reach $201.8 billion by 2026. (Global Industry Analysts, Inc)
  • 20% of US parents plan to spend $2000 on school and after-school activities this fall. (Deloitte Back-to-School Survey)
  • 51% of families with children in K-12 grades have increased spending on virtual learning resources. (Deloitte Back-to-School Survey)

Governments are getting in on the act.

State governments are taking notice. Government funding for alternative learning has skyrocketed, with over one million students benefiting from ESAs and microgrants.

Over one million students benefit from Education Savings Accounts (ESAs)

Global trends towards decentralization are re-enforcing this trend. When families can live anywhere and work anywhere, why not learn anywhere too?

What in the past was a stigma is becoming the norm and more parents are seeing how the flexibility and customization of homeschooling supports their children's learning and their family life.

What's the problem?

It's overwhelming to sort through it all, and find the right fit. Families spend countless hours doing research, trying out different curricula, apps and classes, and even then - they aren't guaranteed to find something their children love.

Our team has spent the last five years talking to families, curating their children's education and building systems that can make curated education scale. We've analyzed over 100,000 comments in online homeschooling forums, interviewed hundreds of resource developers and tested resources with our own students. And we've developed over 200 archetypes to make it possible for every child to find the right fit.

We believe that the world needs an Airbnb for childhood education, a carefully curated marketplace that makes it ridiculously easy and quick for families to find exactly what their child needs, whether that's an online Latin tutor or an in-person world history class.

That’s where Modulo comes in.

We’re solving the pain point of finding the right fit for your child via a vetted marketplace with AI curation. Here’s how it works:

  • We vet and aggregate educational modules in our marketplace using AI and user-generated content (tutors, curriculum, classes, apps)
  • To find great matches, families share insights about their children’s learning preferences. Families review and refer modules their child has loved.
  • Modulo recommends high-quality modules based on their child’s unique archetype, so it’s easy to find the right fit. You book and enroll directly on Modulo.

As each new family shares insights, matches improve for everyone.

The flywheel (network effects and retention)

Modulo improves as more families and providers use it.

Parents share insights → Recommendations become more accurate.

Better recommendations → Parents find what they need faster and stay engaged.

Providers gain visibility and customers → They continue listing and transacting on Modulo.

More data = stronger retention → The more Modulo is used, the more valuable it becomes.

This flywheel effect strengthens the platform over time, making it an indispensable tool for homeschooling families.

LLMs make this possible

In the past, it was exceedingly difficult to vet and aggregate local and online supply at scale. Building Modulo would have required massive capital and a laborious city-by-city launch. But with the refinement of LLMs, it's easier then ever to draw on a vast body of user-generated content to aggregate, vet and recommend resources for homeschooling families based on their unique needs.

How Modulo is re-inventing the marketplace model

One of our major insights is that families don't just want to find a quality learning experience, they want to find the right fit for their child. When families look for learning experiences on Modulo, they get asked a series of questions that help us identify what learning experiences would serve them well. When they review learning experiences, they're also asked a series of questions so we can help match other kids with that experience. It's time for a system that transcends the five star review model and helps families find what they need as their needs evolve. This review system also generates powerful network effects. As each new families shares insights about their child's experience, recommendations improve for everyone.

Market size

The modular learning market is significant and continues to grow.

Our beachhead market is US homeschooling families, encompassing 5.5 million families. These families are most desperate for our support right now.

Our plan is to quickly expand to all US school-age kids, starting with gifted kids and kids with autism, ADHD and Dyslexia. 20% of children have been diagnosed with special needs that make them a misfit for traditional school.

Ultimately, we see this as a global endeavor, tapping into the 10 trillion preK-gray education market.

We see Modulo as a global endeavor tapping into the $10 trillion dollar education industry.

Why invest?

Modulo is a mission-driven company, but we're also a venture-funded company. We're inviting you to invest because we believe we can give you a strong return on your investment. We've seen that marketplace models like Airbnb and Uber can be incredibly successful.

Modulo isn’t just a discovery tool—it’s an infrastructure layer for modular learning, built on a recurring revenue model with strong retention.

  • Families subscribe to weekly recurring plans and many have been on the same plan for years.
  • Parents return because Modulo simplifies the homeschooling process in a way no other platform does.
  • As Modulo scales, network effects and AI-powered recommendations will make the platform even more valuable, reinforcing adoption and engagement.

Modulo's Business Model

Our model charge the parent and service provider. Providers list their programs on Modulo. Modulo takes a 10-20% fee. Since their priority is replacing school, modular learners spend $7200 annually on their child’s education over 13 years. State governments like Florida and Arizona are already reimbursing families this amount. With 1 million families using our marketplace to replace school (just 2% of the projected US homeschooling population), that's 1.2B annually in revenue.

With one million students using Modulo to replace school, we'll make $1.25B annually.

We believe that now is the time to disrupt K12 education with a powerful new ecosystem for learning. Families are increasingly frustrated with the status quo and excited to use their spending power to increase the quality of their children's education and family life. State governments see the value and efficiency in supporting this urge. As the state of public education decreases and new funding for alternative learning emerges, this trend will only continue to grow.

Why parents pay through Modulo

Some investors wonder, “Why wouldn’t parents just take Modulo’s recommendations and book directly with providers?” Here’s why they choose to stay and transact on the platform:

  • Seamless booking and payments. Parents don’t just need recommendations—they need a simple, centralized way to manage their child’s education. Modulo eliminates the friction of coordinating multiple providers.
  • Sticky services. Certain offerings—like tutoring and customized learning plans—keep families on the platform. Educators and tutors don’t want to build full-fledged businesses; they just want to earn more and contribute.
  • Providers prefer to stay on Modulo. Even when parents try to go direct, providers often choose to transact through Modulo because it brings them steady, qualified customers and handles payments for them.
  • Growing marketplace demand. As we’ve scaled, businesses have approached us, asking how they can advertise on Modulo. While this is a potential revenue stream, we are focused on search, discovery, and marketplace commissions as our core business model.

Why us? Why now?

Most education reforms fail because they're unable to do mastery learning, which results in two sigma better learning outcomes, at scale. Modular learning makes it possible to deliver high quality mastery learning at scale by empowering educators and entrepreneurs to re-design education with cost-effective unit economics.

Now is a critical time to build the mechanism to connect families who want customization with the choices they need. Modulo is building the technology that makes it possible for families to find cost-efficient choices at scale.

Why us?

We are parents and teachers with a totally unique combination of expertise in education, homeschooling, government partnerships and scaling user-centered technology platforms.

Modulo has the network to turbocharge this movement

In the last years, Modulo has become a leading voice in the modular learning movement, not only coining the term "modular learning" and bringing it into mainstream discourse on education, but becoming a trusted source for information and support for homeschooling families around the globe.

If you watch our podcast, you can get a sense of the trusted relationships we've carefully nurtured over time with a diverse network of key stakeholders, from the leaders of online homeschooling groups, to Edtech founders, to government leaders like Doug Tuthill, professors at leading teacher colleges like Bank Street College of Education, to organizations like the Davidson Institute to thought leaders like Nir Eyal, Kerry McDonald and Naval Ravikant (who you can listen to talk about modular learning on our podcast).

There is no one else who has brought together such a powerful group to expand our vision for a new education system.

A new paradigm for public education

In the past homeschooling has been reserved for the elite - or those prepared to make a significant sacrifice of time and money.

Public education is important for a healthy democracy.

We want to make this kind of education available to everyone.

Just because education is free doesn't mean has to look the same for every student. We believe that every student, regardless of their ability to pay, should have access to an education that meets their unique needs: socially, emotionally and academically.

Modulo will make this possible by easing the friction of choice and empowering innovation through an AI-powered marketplace for childhood education.

When you've seen what we've done with a newsletter and directory of services, imagine the possibilities when we have a fully integrated marketplace with AI curation, a head of partnerships to build our government relationships and a full-time designer to make this entire experience as beautiful and seamless as possible for every family.

Our raise

The goal of this raise is to build our marketplace. We'll use the funds to hire people and build our team.

Fundraising milestones
What we're hoping to learn

Up into this point, we've been building a movement, we have a directory of resources, we've run experiments and we're ready to scale. We're raising this pre-seed round to build the Modulo marketplace, start monetizing it and see how families interact with the platform, so we can continually improve it, build out government partnerships and take Modulo to families everywhere. Ideally, this will be our only round of funding. Modulo has a strong financial model with good margins to maximize value for families and create a sustainable company.

As with every early stage company, there is risk. But we believe that a visually appealing, user-centered marketplace for modular learning is something the world needs. And we hope you'll join us in making it come into being.
