Why I Built MateMachine

Cities have a structure for almost everything. If someone wants coffee, they go to a café. If they want to exercise, they go to a gym. If they need transportation, there is a system for that. But if someone simply feels like having a conversation, where do they go?

Every day, thousands of people pass one another in cafés, gyms, public spaces, and city neighborhoods. The people are already there. What is missing is a dependable structure that helps them recognize when others are also open to a conversation.

Human connection is a real need. Technology should help make it easier.

That is why I built MateMachine.

What MateMachine Does

MateMachine is a digital coordination system that provides a repeatable, easy-to-access structure for everyday face-to-face conversation across city neighborhoods.

People choose an active neighborhood conversation hub, arrive and check in, and MateMachine coordinates the introduction. They can then put their phones away, and the face-to-face conversation begins.

MateMachine does not organize private events. It works through familiar public places that people already share.

Public by design. Participation by choice.

The goal is simple: when someone wants to talk, the city should offer a system for it.

Why This Civic Structure Does Not Already Exist

This cannot be created by simply putting two profiles on a screen. Participation must feel natural, safe, and repeatable in public life.

That requires digital coordination, behavioral design, public-space activation, identity, trust, and field operations to work as one system. Neither an app nor a single venue can establish this structure.

These interdependent layers were developed and refined over several years. Copying one feature would not reproduce the system or the operating knowledge behind it. Together, these layers create a coordination system—similar to how Uber brought structure to mobility, and Airbnb brought structure to hospitality.

We activate the system by starting where motivation for social participation is strongest—by making conversation between men and women easier. We see this as a natural and foundational form of human connection that deserves a repeatable structure in the real world.

As participation grows, the same system will support broader social and community conversations.

What We Learned During the Test Phase

Before a larger deployment, we needed to learn whether people would participate and whether the model worked in the field.

Over six months, we operated 17 live test sessions in Vancouver. The test phase produced:

  1. 34,000+ measured web interactions
  2. 3,700 active users
  3. Repeat attendance reaching 70% in the strongest measured cohort

We relied entirely on field marketing, which took place on only seven of the 17 test days; no digital advertising was used during the test phase.

One of our most meaningful tests happened during the fireworks at Vancouver’s English Bay. People connected through MateMachine, put their phones away, sat beside the ocean, and watched the fireworks together. The technology fulfilled its purpose and stepped out of the way, leaving two people with a real conversation and a shared experience.

During this phase, we refined the technology, participation experience, and operating model ahead of deployment. The results also indicated strong organic interest and word-of-mouth growth potential.

The Business and Participation Model

Users begin with a free conversation. They can then pay about the price of a coffee for each structured real-world conversation or choose a monthly membership.

As the network grows, neighborhood business partnerships provide an additional long-term B2B revenue stream. Future online formats can broaden participation, complement the city-based model, and increase demand for real-world conversation.

MateMachine will begin its deployment by building a concentrated founding community and activating selected neighborhoods in each pilot city.

Direct local outreach and field activation will establish the initial base. As the network gains momentum, repeat use, referrals, word of mouth, and digital outreach can increasingly support expansion to additional operating days, neighborhoods, and cities.

This focused approach allows us to build consistent participation and create a repeatable path into new cities.

Built Over Several Years

I have led MateMachine through product direction, behavioral design, development, and field validation over several years and committed substantial personal capital ahead of this round.

More than 92 developers and specialists have contributed at different stages of MateMachine’s development.

Ebrahim Nabiee serves as Fractional CTO and Advisor, leading MateMachine’s technical architecture and pilot readiness. He brings 20 years of experience in software architecture and engineering leadership, including former roles as Group CTO and Vice President of Engineering at Alibaba Travels. He also co-founded a Domain-Driven Design community.

MateMachine holds U.S. and Canadian trademarks and has filed an international patent application.

An early backer invested approximately US$92,000 during validation and committed an additional US$10,000 on this round’s terms.

What This Capital Unlocks

MateMachine’s first funding milestone in this private Wefunder round is US$50,000. Reaching it will qualify the round for promotion by Wefunder and fund our initial U.S. deployment through weekend pilots in selected neighborhoods in San Diego and Miami.

Our current financing target is US$1 million. At that level, we can sustain deployment in those cities, run more operating days, establish local teams, accelerate participant acquisition, and expand into additional cities.

The first US$200,000 of that target is available through this private round at a lower valuation cap than the community round we may launch later. We also remain open to a larger lead or anchor investment that could accelerate the plan.

Why Community Ownership Matters

We chose equity crowdfunding because MateMachine addresses a social need and is built for people, allowing them to become owners, advocates, and local supporters who can help the network take root in their communities.

We are not trying to manufacture a new human need. We are building a system around an important need that has always been there—and giving people the opportunity to own part of it from the beginning.

I invite you to join us as an early investor and help establish a dependable civic structure for one of our most fundamental human needs: conversation.

Let’s make the city human.
