Our Team

We originally formed KubeSail as a consultancy to help developers keep skills independent from big cloud providers. We realized that a smaller and smaller fraction of people know how to host content on the internet, which felt urgent. Upon discovering the self-hosting movement, we knew a turn-key product could turn this hobby into an industry.

We've improved the hardware and on-boarding considerably since that video premiered, and we're excited for new reviews which are currently in progress. Our new metal cases and boards are fully manufactured in China, instead of 3d printed and soldiered in our basements 😉

Common use-cases

Our customers are fairly split between several large apps and use-cases. Photostructure, a self-hosted replacement for Google Photos is very popular, as well as Jellyfin, a smart-TV-compatible media server. I do the family cooking, so I love Tandoor Recipes, a recipe-site-scraping app that downloads recipes and helps maintain a shopping list. Our earliest and more technical customers write custom apps and use our tools to deploy and access them. Like the Personal Computer, it's quite hard to explain the potential use-case of a Personal Server -- however, we need our analog to Word Processing. To that end, we're initially focusing on private photo/video storage and general file-backup use-case.

An open-source app store

Our long term vision is to enable open-source software developers to resell our hardware pre-loaded with with their app, and to enable open-source consumer software to emerge as an entirely new marketplace. "Apps" on KubeSail are Kubernetes apps: an extremely powerful enterprise-grade open-source cloud infrastructure tool. Developers selling software to enterprises need to make only trivial changes to be able to sell to an entirely new category of customer.
