What they do: A social network where lesbians can meet each other for friendship, advice, and more. They put a strong focus on content specifically curated for and dedicated to queer women, whether they’re bi-curious or as gay as a rainbow.
Why it’s a big deal: There are roughly 5 million lesbian and bisexual women in the United States with no way to connect. Her is the first social app focused solely on the lesbian community.
Other apps apparently targeting lesbians and bisexual females typically reskin a gay male offering and slap on a femme-friendly name. Robyn took the exact opposite approach to cynical reskins, and build something that reflects what gay women actually want from a dating app.
Her, the mobile dating service that caters to lesbian women, has announced that it’s available nationwide. The app promises there are “No men, no fakes. We provide a safe space for gay and bisexual women so you know you’re talking to real people.”
But for us queer women, it's been a long, lonely slog on dating services that don't quite get us (despite getting peppered with plenty of unsolicited ménage à trois proposals). Happily, there’s good news: We may have just found the one.
Exton had worked in the dating business for three years at the marketing agency for Global Personals, which runs a range of sites including Dating Republic, Love2Meet and Singles365. She felt that the existing lesbian dating apps weren't quite cutting it, so set out planning the mobile-only Dattch.
Being a dating app specifically designed for gay women may not sound too remarkable — but in fact the gay female dating scene is spectacularly badly served, says founder and CEO Robyn Exton. “Every single dating product that’s been produced for gay women is horrific,” she tells TechCrunch. “The biggest problem [with rivals’ products] is they don’t have any consideration of how these women are different.”
