Founder, Lanny Smith, is a former NBA player who transitioned into entrepreneurship after a career ending injury. His first brand, Active Faith Sports, was the first of it's kind, Faith based sports apparel brand that he launched with fellow NBA players and friends Steph Curry and Anthony Tolliver. Lanny founded Actively Black out of his apartment during the pandemic in 2020 and has led the growth of the brand from day 1.
Actively Black is much bigger than just the clothes. We are building a Tribe, a global community throughout the Diaspora that is connected by our Culture, our DNA and our mission to uplift our people. The apparel is the common thread that brings us together but the purpose and the community being built is the main goal.
Apparel-footwear spending by US Black consumers will grow by about 6 per cent a year to $70 billion in nominal dollars by 2030, according to a survey by McKinsey. This will be part of the total of $445 billion in nominal dollars that the survey data suggests will be up for grabs from 2022 to 2030, including a cumulative $50 billion in entirely new spending. Black consumers increasingly use online channels to shop for these products, and they are also more likely-by 11 percentage points-to prefer to use e-commerce to shop for and buy apparel, the survey found. What is especially distinctive is Black consumers' strong preference for Black-owned fashion brands and brands that are culturally resonant with Black culture. They are up to three times as likely as non-Black consumers to switch to a Black-owned apparel or footwear brand, McKinsey said in a release.
Actively Black is poised to be THE dominant Black owned athleisure brand over the next decade that can own this space. The goal is to become a multi-billion dollar, global entity that connects the entire Diaspora and provide a Black owned alternative to the Nike, Adidas, Lululemon, Puma brands in this space.
Gymshark and Vuori would be considered the comparisons for Actively Black as they are both direct to consumer athleisure brands that focused on serving a niche audiences and reaching that audience through ecommerce, social media, and branded activations. Though they target a niche audience, the size of the industry and their audiences has still allowed them to become Billion dollar brands within 10 years of their launch.
In the Direct to Consumer/ E-Commerce industry, return customers are the key to sustained, profitable growth and longevity. The increase in cost to advertise via social media and online channels, means that running ads alone is not a reliable strategy for growth. The strength of Actively Black's growth has been the consistency of return customers who keep coming back.
With over 15,000 5 STAR Reviews, our products can stand up next to any of the giant brands in this space. We wanted to destroy the stereotype that shopping Black owned meant sacrificing quality.
Giving back and Re-Investing into the Black Community is part of the purpose of Actively Black and we have been transparent from the beginning with our charitable efforts to show that we are really about this mission beyond the performative promises that we all saw in 2020.
Our efforts to pour back into the Black community go beyond just donating money. We create free events for the community like Mental Health Training Camps to equip our people with the tools and education we need to improve our lives in every area.
The power of the growth of our brand is all because of the Tribe. The every day people who support Actively Black with their hard earned money and proudly represent and tell everybody about it. But we have also been blessed to be embraced by several cultural icons throughout the sports and entertainment industry who support and represent the brand as well. Their ability to bring attention and exposure to the brand has also been a major part of the growth of Actively Black.
