VOCs are compounds like acetone, benzene and formaldehyde that are emitted as gases. They can come from paints, furniture, varnish, copiers and printers, cleaning detergents, hair spray, etc. Breathing VOCs can irritate the eyes, nose and throat, can cause difficulty breathing and nausea, and can damage the central nervous system as well as other organs. Using plants to remove chemicals from indoor air is called biofiltration. According to a NASA study, in addition to carbon dioxide, plants can take up gases such as benzene, toluene and other VOCs. By aerating the detachable plant pot and adding a fan, the purification speed is amplified. We don't fully rely on the plant of course, we also use large chunks of Bamboo Activated Charcoal which are excellent at trapping VOC's and gases. Reason #2 Most HEPA purifiers use a lot of plastic in the frames that hold the HEPA together. As you may know, filters need to be replaced at least twice a year which adds to the existing plastic pollution burden. By working with biofilters, we eliminate unnecessary plastic waste.
