The Power of TEAM

I was taught at a very early age that it was not about me the individual, but about the team. First, I have 3 brothers and was raised 1 among them, not one above or below.

At age 7 I started in organized sports and played almost all year around. We were teammates and everything else was blind (like age or race or even gender).

I went into the Marine Corps and taught we were all equally green, just different tones. Same with being a Cop, we were all blue.

As a person of faith, I have been taught to love…everyone, and that includes everyone.

Film is a funny beast. It allows that team spirit but forces individuality. We praise that 1 actor. Or everyone is hyper-focused on securing their next gig, as no one else will do it for them. Film can teach someone to see the leverage that can achieve from others, even in falsely sharing in someone else success, for they are riddled with agenda.

I know the rub there is not an easy one to navigate, for 1 person’s win, is not necessarily the team’s win. But, when creatives come together to create, we should pause and know that this is a unique moment in time that WE, the collective share in the creation of a story. Each giving to the betterment of the story… ”for the good of the film” is a phrase I began to say early on in my filmmaking journey.

I have always believed that WE are the solution to our lack of film in our area. WE hold the keys to our own success, but the reverse is also true, for we also hold our own destruction. IF we can think about the good of everyone = we win, if we cannot = we lose.
