Hi all, the long weekend is almost upon us, and it’s a great time to catch up on some reading or interesting television viewing.  Here are a few of our favorite articles, books, and shows that bring to light the issues of labor in farming in interesting and gripping ways.

First, let’s start easy: here’s a great recent story on how Napa Valley is stepping up and trying to do a better job of valuing and integrating the vineyard workers in their community.

Next, here are some of our favorite farm worker related books:

  • TomatoLand: Tells you the history of the tomato from its origins in Peru to modern day exploitation in Florida
  • Voices from the Field: A really touching set of stories and poems from the children of farm workers
  • Fresh Fruit Broken Bodies: A U.C. Berkeley professor tells his revealing story of living with migrant farm workers in Oaxaca, traveling with them across the border, and working in the fields along the West Coast of the U.S.

And lastly, if all you want to do is sit back and watch some dramatic TV, Season 3 of American Crime (available on Netflix) tells the story of the challenges both farms and farm workers face trying to survive in our modern food system.
