We were excited to recently add Paulo Dimas to our team as Head of Product, and (thankfully), Paulo was just as excited to join Unbabel in our quest for world domination translating the world through a combination of artificial intelligence and crowdsourcing.

Paulo says well: “Empowering humans with the most advanced language technologies using artificial intelligence is a really exciting challenge.” We agree, and Paulo is helping not only on the user interface side of things (focusing mostly on our mobile experience), but he’s also learning about the difficulties of translation and machine learning as he works with our teams to create the best product possible.

What makes Unbabel different from other translation services is that we have machines and humans working together to produce language that’s as natural as human speak, but isn’t as time-consuming and expensive as traditional translation. “I believe humans will never be replaced by AI,” says Paulo, “but instead will be augmented by it, dramatically increasing the speed of human quality translation and making it ubiquitous.”

AI that can pass the Turing test (where its speak is indistinguishable from a human’s) hasn’t been figured out yet, so we’re excited to be at the forefront of the tech of natural language processing and machine learning. When we figure this out, our lives will change forever. We think that’s pretty damn exciting.

From a young age, Paulo has been obsessed with building products and startups, and most recently built a geo-social service that’s being used by major mobile companies across 3 continents. His passion for building challenging services and his experience across all levels of product development made us very excited to bring him on board.

We’re working on some pretty difficult problems, and we’re building technology at the forefront of machine learning and artificial intelligence, including looking into neural networks as a way to train our AI. Paulo says, “Neural machine translation is producing surprising results that can make it a technological game changer in the near future.”
