Does exit intent work on mobile?

For those unfamiliar with exit intent, or exit displays, it's a relatively new technique that lets you present a popup or offer to a website visitor who is about to leave your site.

Before understanding exit intent implications for mobile traffic, you need to first understand how it works.

It's all about tracking the mouse.

As you can see in the example above, the website actually tracks the mouse movement of the visitor. As the mouse is moving to "exit" or shut the tab, a display is prompted. You can put a discount in the display, or just a signup form, it's totally up to you, but the entire interaction is dependent on mouse or cursor traceability.

Does exit intent work on mobile phones?

No. Given the majority of smart phone traffic is touch based, exit displays do not currently work for your mobile traffic. You can still target them with time based or mobile detected displays, but without that mouse traceability, it's currently impossible to predict when someone is leaving your site from a mobile phone.
