If there’s any silver lining to the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s that telehealth has provided a safe and reliable way for people to receive personal care right from the comfort and safety of their homes. Christopher McFadden, who specializes in healthcare investing at Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKR), estimates that "telehealth will be a quarter trillion-dollar industry, up from about $3 billion within the next five years" (Forbes, June 16, 2020).
Although an unexpected outcome of the COVID crisis, telehealth has proven itself to have a long life because of its convenience and value to patients and physicians alike. Here are some stats:The number of Medicare beneficiaries receiving telehealth services beginning in March 2020 increased by over 100 times. Specifically, it went from 11,000 users on March 7 to 1.3 million users by April 18 (Source: Crunchbase News, June 5, 2020).
According to CB Insights, the Healthcare + Artificial Intelligence (AI) category of startups has collectively raised more than $2 billion in investment funding in the past 5 years.
AI startups disrupt healthcare and have attracted the highest amount of investment capital, even higher than cybersecurity, fintech, and sales/CRMs (Source: CBInsights).
