Listening to Public Radio

A few nights ago, on my commute home, I was listening to the Public Radio show “Marketplace”. It’s one of my favorites, business news of the day packed into 30 minutes, perfect drive listening. During the daily run-down, they mentioned the yield on 10-year Treasury Bills at 1.054%.

That’s what I heard. One Point Zero Five Four Percent.

I know, it’s supposed to be the safest of investments but really, you hold my money for 10 years and pay me a 1% interest rate?

Let me suggest an alternative. It’s called a Whiskey Bond.

Unlike the government, we’re not running a deficit, invest the money in production infrastructure, back our bonds with new-fill whiskey barrels, pay at the annual interest rate of 5%, and at maturity give you a rather unique conversion option that allows you the choice of taking some of your principal and interest as bourbon or rye whiskey. You can take all or part as barrel proof, non-chill filtered bottled spirits with your name on your bottles.
