As you may know, Quadrant Biosciences is engaged in three, integrated solutions to address COVID-19: 1) individual saliva testing, 2) pooled saliva surveillance and 3) wastewater monitoring.  So its extremely gratifying for us when we see all three of these testing protocols successfully implemented by an institution.  In this case, Alfred State College has added wastewater testing as an early warning detection system to helps guide the need for pooled and individual testing.

So how do these three approaches work together? In the event there is positive detection of the COVID-19 virus in the wastewater, pooled saliva surveillance can then be implemented to efficiently test groups, or pools, of students at once. If there is a positive pool, then individual testing of all students in the pooled group would be conducted to determine the individuals who are positive.

In this way, [the college] can quickly isolate the positive case and begin contact tracing in coordination with local departments of health.
