From My Heart to Yours
I’ve always been one to think that it is my job as an entrepreneur and business owner to make a difference. My passion for creating memorable experiences, bringing people together, and focusing on celebrating has all been shaken upside down amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic. I want to first say, I am beyond grateful to everyone who is supporting small businesses everywhere. We can’t survive without you, and it is truly inspiring to see how every community across the world is doing this in their own way.
About a month ago when this started to get serious, I struggled. In one weekend, 3 months worth of upcoming business disappeared and I was as stressed emotionally as I was financially. How long can we survive like this? When will it go back to normal? There was so much uncertainty, worry, panic, and fear. I’m not only in the middle of an expansion, but also nearing the end of my crowdfunding campaign in a time when nobody knows what’s going to happen. I shed a lot of tears, way more than I’d like to admit. I felt defeated. It was like the last 12 months of work disappeared overnight. It took a few weeks for me to get a clear head and remember, I’ve been through hardship before, and overcome it. Granted, this is all uncharted territory for us, but one thing is the same: focus on the long term goal, not the immediate panic. Once I shifted my thinking, the positive changes already started happening.
Paying It Forward
When my dessert catering business came to a screeching halt basically overnight, I racked my brain for what I could do to try to generate some revenue. I tried to do what entrepreneurs do best — INNOVATE. It turns out that the answer was not in my head, but in my heart. It’s been amazing to see my community get behind me with their outpouring of support. I have what is deemed an essential business because I provide food, and because I could no longer take orders for events, I shifted my model. Through our Sweet Gratitude Movement people can buy cupcakes that are donated weekly throughout my community, along with a handwritten thank you note, to show gratitude to our local healthcare workers, first responders, and everyone on the front lines, one cupcake at a time.
The response has been amazing. I started receiving messages on social media from the first responders receiving them, and it brought tears to my eyes.
“The box showing up at the nurse’s station was the highlight of my day!! Thank you so much!!!!”
“I was the nurse at the door who received this wonderful blessing from you! They were delicious and brought a smile to all of our faces!”
“It may not seem like a lot, but us healthcare workers truly appreciate when people like you treat us so well!”
In the week of March 8th, my sales went to zero. But the next week, with my pivot, I was back in the kitchen making over 300 cupcakes, and last week, almost 600! As of today, I've delivered over 2,000 cupcakes!

We will also be extending our appreciation to these hardworking heroes when our Celebration House opens in Nashville. When we are able to open up, for the first 6 months ALL women in the healthcare industry will receive a special pampering package, compliments of Celebrate with Sarah.
Both the Dessert Catering Division and my new Hospitality expansion are event-based businesses, so they have definitely been affected by the crisis, but I won’t be deterred from my long term plan. (I don’t give up easily.) Over the last weeks, I have had to step back and take a deep breath. I have been working around the clock to revise our plan to be ready when this pandemic is behind us because I am confident that both the hospitality industry and the event industry will be making a big comeback. We are going to need to gather and celebrate. This crisis has also caused me to open my heart more.
