Wi-Fi 20th Anniversary Reflection

Published on Oct 2, 2019

This year is the twentieth anniversary of the formation of the Wi-Fi Alliance and the launch of Wi-Fi. Doug Dawson, President at CCG Consulting, said “Wi-Fi has become so ubiquitous in our lives that it's hard to believe that it has only been twenty years since all broadband connections came with wires.” I remember being in Beijing in 1999 to give a talk at a technology conference. I was staying in a Holiday Inn. There was no Wi-Fi and there was not even a jack on the wall to connect my ThinkPad. There was no broadband. Lotus Notes was quite advanced at that time and had a mobile dial-up mode which downloaded the mail but excluded images and attachments to compensate for the slow speed. Fortunately, I had some tools and alligator clips. I removed the plastic plate from the wall and attached directly to the bare wires. The email was painfully slow but at least it worked. Just think, today hotels can have Wifigen!
