To be in the mini OEM motorcycle business is the coolest thing imaginable to do. This is because the motorcycle is the single most sacred machine humanity has produced.
Imagine one life/one bike sustainability. Imagine a new Golden Age for the electric motorcyclist. Imagine the “powered by Curtiss” powertrain solution comparing to ICE like a jet to a prop aircraft.
The greatest American motorcycle innovator, by far, is our legacy founder. He formed around us in a serendipitous meta-physical way. In our 520 days of existence since we established Curtiss Motorcycle Company, Inc., we have focused on the creation of an honest portfolio of motorcycles proudly bearing his fierce, glorious American brand.
I made a mistake. With close to 30 years focused on a body of work that took a beloved albeit nostalgic, anachronistic American powertrain invented by Mr. Curtiss to its zenith, always seeing the work like AMG imbuing real brio into the rather staid Mercedes-Benz lineup of cars, I chose to use Zero powertrain tech as a starting point from which Curtiss could provide real brio. The silence of Glenn’s thunderous objection from beyond was deafening. Curtiss is an innovation and design driven enterprise that only creates from the best specification of materials, components, systems and subsystems which are handmade to be the finest, i.e., Curtiss is “highest level”!
We have intensely labored for the past 14 months over our all new Curtiss powertrain solution. It begins with our state of the art batteries and how they feed what is the world’s best inverter powering the world’s best motorcycle motor. Our made-by Curtiss architectural battery solution is 100% motorcycle focused, not a giant cube made for other applications. This allows Curtiss the freedom to make our motorcycles resonate comfortably what they are (please note, Glenn made the Hercules first and then converted, fortunately for all of us, to Curtiss because a German Company had previous rights to Hercules at that time). Study Jordan Cornille’s Zeus from our Raleigh studio. It pays homage to the greatest motorcycle (on display at the Smithsonian) and the greatest motorcycle achievement in history, a four year world speed record of 136 mph when Harley and Indian riders were lucky to see 40 mph. Is it not regal and majestic? Note how lithe and long it appears. It is actually shorter than a typical American bike, yet because our designers insisted that we return to original golden age proportionate elegance and beauty the motorcycle is much more attractive and approachable than the outsized beastly proportion so ubiquitously applied to everything from SUVs to motorcycle design today (think Art Fitzpatrick’s 1959 original DeLorean wide track Pontiac advertisement sketches and how they are so much more visually appealing due to a mere 1.25 to 1.5 inch track increase). The Zeus is our first new Curtiss. We mandate pure, unadulterated honesty. That is the starting point for your one life/one motorcycle dream. It is spiritual, like how you feel about your husband or your wife. That emotional connection, over time, comes down to sincerity and genuineness. Without that your motorcycle is just another assemblage of cheap Chinese parts commercially sourced to make a cynically derived commodity to induce you to write a check. These types of motorcycles abound and are the reason that you can’t keep one. You are highly sophisticated and conscientious about the ride of your life and yearn for substance that is real. You want honest, beautiful design that is timeless, brilliantly engineered and overbuilt to last. Curtiss formed to give it to you.
This is the most exciting time for us. We are building two radial V8 Zeus now for August 16 viewing at the Quail Motorsports gathering. These machines are future classics precisely because your Curtiss team cares so much, loves this business so much, is so committed to it and because, as Goethe said and I quote: “Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans; that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too.”
Lastly, let’s talk Hades. Mr. Curtiss was known worldwide as the original “Hellrider”. We’re from New Orleans. J.T. Nesbitt lent Curtiss his New Orleans studio and considerable talents. Then the blood flowed and oxygen breathed. Zeus is the ruler and a doer. He is wise, decisive and authoritarian. His brother is a bit of an impish hellraiser, a rebel who challenges, highly intelligent and nuanced; he is the thinker. Of course, there is a bit of FTW that all of humanity deals with from time to time. Is the dark resonant Hades energy from the New Orleans deep south not honest?
