The full breakdown: The Celtics trail the Pacers by a single game in the standings, meaning a win on Friday would bring them to a tie. That would also guarantee the Celtics the tiebreaker if the teams finish even in the standings.A loss, however, would put the Celtics two games in a hole that would be difficult to climb, even though Boston has another game against the Pacers next week and both teams have plenty of games ahead. A split favors Indiana, although it doesn’t guarantee them anything. Two wins would be a major boost for the Celtics, both in positioning and in confidence heading into the postseason. Two losses (of course) would more or less seal Boston’s fate as the five-seed.Both the Celtics and the Pacers have difficult schedules remaining, according to Tankathon, although that’s partly because of their remaining head-to-heads.The Celtics aren’t the only team with sweaty palms as the season winds down. Here’s a closer look at both conferences.Eastern ConferenceThe top half of the East is mostly in place. The Milwaukee Bucks have run away with the No. 1 seed, leading the No. 2 Toronto Raptors by four games. The Philadelphia 76ers are relatively isolated in third, trailing the Raptors by 4.5 games while leading the Pacers by three and the Celtics by four games. The Pistons trail the Celtics by six games. After the top five, things tighten up considerably. Just 2.5 games separate the No. 6 Detroit Pistons and the No. 10 Charlotte Hornets. In between the two are the Brooklyn Nets (7), Miami Heat (8) and Orlando Magic (9).Per Tankathon, Brooklyn has the most difficult schedule remaining of any team in the league, with matchups against Milwaukee (twice), Toronto, Indiana and Boston, although its worth wondering who will be resting for Milwaukee and Toronto, with their seeds mostly locked in. The Magic have the easiest path of that bunch at No. 18, although their schedule also includes games against the Pacers and Celtics, both of whom will be motivated to win.Western ConferenceThe West remains incredibly messy, with essentially two separate four-team battles for positioning happening at once.First, the top half: Golden State remains the No. 1 seed, but the Warriors lead the Denver Nuggets by just a game. Both the Portland Trail Blazers and Houston Rockets are four games out of the top slot, and Houston’s schedule is a cupcake going forward: Four of their final six games are against the New York Knicks, Phoenix Suns and the reeling Sacramento Kings. Denver has a brutal finish to the season: Eight games remaining, which includes two against Portland and one each against Golden State, Utah, Oklahoma City and San Antonio. The bottom four (with the Utah Jazz at No. 5 and the San Antonio Spurs at No. 8) is separated at the top by 2.5 games between the Jazz and the Rockets/Trail Blazers and by four games at the bottom between the Spurs and the Kings. In between, just 1.5 games separate the Jazz, Los Angeles Clippers (6), Oklahoma City Thunder (7) and Spurs. San Antonio has the lightest schedule, with five games against tanking teams to go with one tough one against the Nuggets. Oklahoma City may have the most difficult road, with four remaining games against playoff teams.Other Celtics draft notes to watch: The Clippers are 13th in remaining strength of schedule, and now that they have clinched a playoff spot, the Celtics would probably like to see them drop as far as possible to improve the first-round pick which will now convey. The Kings, meanwhile, have a brutal remaining schedule: Seventh-most difficult (Houston twice, Portland, Utah and San Antonio), but they also have a four-game lead over the Minnesota Timberwolves (10).Memphis, meanwhile, has the 7th-best lottery odds with games against the Warriors, Clippers, Blazers and Pistons remaining and just a one-game lead over the Atlanta Hawks. The Celtics would probably prefer to defer the top-eight protected Grizzlies pick to next season, when some of the protections begin to fall away.
