Tonight’s the night for Spurs to take a giant leap forward

The time to reach the next level that Mauricio Pochettino craves has arrived and, of all the possible settings, it had to be Manchester City.

Tottenham will walk out tonight at an arena which has been expanded and rebranded in the nine years since they finally shattered the glass ceiling holding them back from the top four, but the memories remain.

Peter Crouch headed the only goal as Harry Redknapp’s side earned a 1-0 victory that secured Spurs Champions League football for the first time and delayed City’s state-sponsored assault on the game’s elite.

Both clubs have changed dramatically since, City’s growth accelerated exponentially by vast Abu Dhabi investment to become a Premier League powerhouse. Spurs dispensed with Redknapp, stalled under Andre Villas-Boas and Tim Sherwood but have kicked on again in Pochettino’s five years at the helm to reach this point, one the Argentine repeatedly identifies as the final frontier in competing for titles.

Spurs’s new £1billion stadium stands proudly alongside the finest in the world. Pochettino wants his team to do the same. His message has been clear: think bigger, bolder.

They would break new ground by reaching the Champions League semi-finals this evening and many would appreciate the irony of doing so at the expense of a club that identified their own grand plan years ago and spent around £1.5billion on players since 2008 in realising that ambition.

Etihad Stadium, or Eastlands as it was then, is a venue where they were beaten in 2011 as Crouch again scored the only goal — this time at the wrong end — as City sealed fourth spot and Spurs missed out on Europe’s elite competition.

They were in the title race a year later when losing 3-2, as Mario Balotelli escaped a clear red-card offence minutes before slotting home a stoppage-time winner from the penalty spot. City would go on to win the title on goal difference, while Spurs were denied Champions League football despite finishing fourth after Chelsea beat Bayern Munich in the Final.
