Daniel Ricciardo is perfectly positioned to claim his first Formula 1 points as a Renault driver when the Chinese Grand Prix starts on Sunday (4.10pm AEDT).

The Australian turned in his best qualifying result of the season on Saturday, going seventh-fastest and finishing 0.004 seconds ahead of teammate Nico Hulkenberg.

After retirements at Albert Park and in Bahrain, Ricciardo will look to jump-start his season at the Grand Prix he won for Red Bull last year.

Aiming to win it this year is Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas, who upstaged his five-time world champion teammate Lewis Hamilton during qualifying.


Hamilton was unhappy with his car’s set-up all weekend but still almost snatched pole, finishing with a time just 0.023 seconds slower.

Posing a threat to the Mercedes one-two, however, is Ferrari. Drivers Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc will start the race in third and fourth respectively.

Red Bull ace Max Verstappen begins in fifth after blowing up at his rivals during qualifying for overtaking him on an out-lap.
