PERTH — The Wallabies and All Blacks have kept each other on the hop with their selection surprises this week.
New Zealand expected David Pocock to play: nope.

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen admitted he was surprised Michael Cheika picked “jack in the box” James O’Connor at outside centre and would have to tweak his defensive system to suit.

Similarly there will be a few adjustments to the Australian strategy whiteboard after Ardie Savea was picked to wear the New Zealand No 6 jersey for the first time.

Savea and Sam Cane will form an explosive one-two breakdown punch while another specialist on-baller, Matt Todd, is lurking on the bench as the Kiwis try to run the hosts off their feet on a hard and fast Optus Stadium surface.

Wallabies captain Michael Hooper admitted he didn’t see the Savea at 6 pick coming.

“I think it’s an opportunity for them to do something different, show a different picture,” Hooper said.

“We don’t know what to expect.

“They’ll be working it out on the run I’m sure too and they’re always very solid in what they have to do individually.

“They’ll be looking for something out of Ardie and Sam respectively so wait to see what that brings and we’ll have to deal with that accordingly.

“We’ve played these guys a lot, we know that the on ball presence is going to be fierce as every Test match is against New Zealand in that area.

“Ardie poses a big ball carrying threat and great over the ball as well so it’ll be a fierce breakdown challenge and I’m interested to see how it plays out.”

The All Blacks lineout, led expertly by Sam Whitelock, has had the wood on the Wallabies in recent Bledisloe Cup battles.

But they will have just three genuine jumpers on Saturday — Whitelock, Kieran Read and Scott Barrett — and no Brodie Retallick to go to either.

Tolu Latu’s throwing will still come under pressure but Australia has more tall timber in its back row with the athletic Isi Naisarani an excellent option.

“They’re a world class lineout and they have been for how ever many years,” Hooper said of the All Blacks.

“I know that when we’ve worked in that shape (Hooper and Pocock in tandem) it’s sometimes it’s about speed and not all about height so how they try and work that into their game is going to be interesting.”

New Zealand have already showed their hand in aiming for an up-tempo Test and Hooper said the Wallabies would happily engage in a fast and furious game.

That sounds promising for the spectators hoping for plenty of points but it also spells danger if Australia turns over too much pill or don’t get their kick-chase game right.

“Some of the rugby we’ve played this international season has been to that sort of level,” Hooper said.

“It’s been an enjoyable game to play so usually these games are high tempo.

“The turnover and the transition parts of the game are massive in these Test matches and who can scramble momentum, who can build that as the game goes on.

“They’ve picked three 7s and we’ve got some guys in Tolu (Latu) who is a real threat over the ball.

“Breakdown is going to be hot...

“I talked about how transitioning — that’s probably where we missed out a lot last year, a lot of the Kiwi points came off transition, off turnover and what they were able to do with it there so those moments are so important and understanding the gravity of those and what they can do in a game and shutting those down is critical for us.”

Australia Wallabies

While the Rugby Championship is an important fixture, no doubt Michael Cheika will have eyes towards not just the World Cup but indeed the 2019 Bledisloe Cup, with the Wallabies nearing 20 years since they last won that iconic piece of silverware. There is no Israel Folau and the side is missing that X factor, so it’ll be interesting to see what Cheika does, whether he takes the punt on Quade Cooper, who has been pretty good in the Super Rugby this season. The other wildcard for the coach is bringing in James O’Conner, who returns to Australian Rugby after a stint overseas and from all reports, he has grown up and matured given a few years ago he made the headlines not for his footy but for what he did off the field. The Wallabies have every chance of winning the Championship again, but don’t look for every exciting match involving Wallabies Free to Air in Australia.

New Zealand All Blacks

The All Blacks probably aren’t as invincible as they were a few years ago, but they are still clearly the best side in world Rugby and go into this, the Bledisloe Cup and indeed the World Cup as overwhelming favourites. Steve Hansen has picked a strong 39 man squad for the Rugby Championship and it’ll be interesting to see how he manages the team given several players will have played in the Super Rugby Final and will more than likely be bruised and battered, so team management will be critical, especially when they take on South Africa and Australia later on in the Championship.
