After surviving another upset attempt at
the buzzer, Duke will look to return to the Final Four by beating Tom
Izzo’s Michigan State Spartans.

Sometimes
it’s better to be lucky than good, but the Duke Blue Devils have
certainly been both this season. Duke has arguably the most talented
roster in the country, but they have gotten their fair share of luck in
the NCAA Tournament, surviving two games in a row because the
opposition’s final shot fell short at the buzzer.

The
latest near-disaster came against ACC rival Virginia Tech, who got a
perfect look at the basket with 1.1 seconds to go only to see Ahmed
Hill’s layup attempt bounce off the rim. Duke played without Cam Reddish

The Blue Devils will need to step up their game if they want to get
by the Michigan State Spartans and return to the Final Four. The
Spartans never trailed in their Sweet 16 matchup with LSU, winning 80-63
after freshman Aaron Henry (the one-time subject of Tom Izzo’s rage)
scored 20 points to lead the team.

While Mike Krzyzewski is 11-1
in his career against Izzo, it is worth noting that Izzo is extremely
good at getting his team ready to play on a short turnaround. Since
taking the Spartans to the tournament for his first appearance in 1998,
Izzo’s teams have gone 22-6 when they have less than 48 hours to prepare
for their next opponent, which could be a bad sign for Duke.
