The Syracuse Orange conclude their season-opening seven-game homestand Sunday afternoon as they host the Duke Blue Devils in ACC conference play at Cicero-North Syracuse High School. Opening faceoff is set for 2 PM on ESPNU. Syracuse alums Anish Shroff and Paul Carcaterra, as well as former Duke midfielder Myles Jones, will be on the call (Live Stats are here).

The Orange lead the all-time series 12-6 and have met every year since 2011. The two teams became ACC rivals when Syracuse entered the conference in 2014. Head coach John Desko is 9-5 all-time against the Blue Devils and has won the last three meetings.

As mentioned above, the game has been moved to Bragman Stadium at Cicero-North Syracuse due to women’s basketball hosting the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament inside the Carrier Dome. -The last time ‘Cuse played an outdoor home game was in 1989 against Penn, which was a 22-1 rout at Coyne Stadium, the former home of the men’s lacrosse team. Since the Dome was built, the Orange have had five games at Coyne and are 5-0 in those games. They’ve also won the last 12 outdoor home games (all of them at Coyne).

The Last Game

For the second straight week, the Orange started out slow in the first half, this time against Rutgers. But the Orange exploded in the final quarter with an 18-14 win over the Scarlet Knights thanks to an 8-1 run in the final 11:55 of the game. Jamie Trimboli and Nate Solomon each had four goals and an assist, while Bradley Voigt and Stephen Rehfuss recorded four points in the comeback win.

In the final quarter, Solomon got some runs at midfield while Griffin Cook played attack. Could we see more of that this weekend?

Last Time They Met

It was a rainy affair at Koskinen Stadium last season, as the Orange won a 15-14 back-and-forth affair. Tucker Dordevic gave ‘Cuse an 11-9 lead with 8:31 left in the third quarter before Duke went on a 4-0 run to take a two-goal lead. After Syracuse went on a 3-0 run of their own, Joe Robertson tied the game on a crazy sequence a 14 before Trimboli scored the game-winner for the second straight season, this time in regulation.

KNOW YOUR ENEMY: DUKE

The Blue Devils are one of the best teams in the country. Their lone loss was an early midweek defeat to the High Point Panthers, but they’ve recorded wins over Towson, Loyola, Richmond, Penn, and Denver so far this season. They’re certainly battle-tested.

Two of their three starting attackmen are back, but the new attackman is also a returning player. Joe Robertson is the top option at attack and starred as a freshman with Justin Guterding. The sophomore leads the team with 25 goals and 35 points Joey Manown also returns and is second on the team with 17 goals. Senior Brad Smith moves down from midfield and is first on the team with 14 assists and is second with 28 points.

At midfield, graduate student Jake Seau, the son of the late Pro Football Hall of Famer Junior Seau, is the only midfielder to have started all nine games. He’s the only other Blue Devil outside of the three starting attackmen to have 10 or more goals. As for the other midfielders, Duke went with sophomore Nakeie Montgomery and freshman Garrett Leadmon as starters last week, but they have some quality depth as well. Juniors Reilly Walsh and Kevin Quigley along with seniors CJ Carpenter and Sean Lowrie are also key contributors up top. Sophomore Cameron Badour is also an option, especially on the man-up unit, and freshman Owen Caputo has seen a little time.

Duke boasts one of the best defensive units in the entire country. Cade Van Raaphorst and JT Giles-Harris are 1a and 1b for the Blue Devils. Both provide some scary defensive attributes, and even Van Raaphorst, a senior, added some scoring punch in last week’s 12-10 win over Towson. Senior Jack Fowler is the third starting defenseman. Grad student Peter Welch and Wilson Stephenson are the two main LSMs. Terry Lindsay and John Prendergast as their top two short stick defensive midfielders, with Jack Falk and Blake Leischow as the second two SSDMs.

Senior Turner Uppgren takes over in goal after four years of Danny Fowler in net. The Blue Devils also have their own duo of FOGOs in Brian Smyth and freshman Jordan Ginder.

Things To Know

Desko said Grant Murphy was questionable for the game. He injured himself early against Johns Hopkins, and it looked like he rolled his ankle.

Also hear from Solomon and Jared Fernandez. Their facial reactions in the thumbnails are pretty identical.

Enjoy the weekend of college lacrosse! There’s a ton of other games this weekend (including Virginia-Johns Hopkins), so make sure you enjoy what the sport has to offer! And if you want to chat during the game, this will be the place to do it!
