Our Founder

My motivation for this project is related to my 13+ years experience in the food service and hospitality industries. Being an immigrant for more than 16 years in three different countries made me feel the need to share my traditional cuisine with the rest of the world. Mixing up food and history.

A West African/South American fusion restaurant working to expand

The Damel was founded by ElHadji Oumar Diouf, a Senegalese chef who discovered the proximity of African and South American cuisine during his time as a soccer player and coordinator in Argentina and Brazil. 

Our Cuisine:

He realized that Brazilian food is under-popularized, and that people do not know the story behind Afro-Brazilian cuisine. 

The Damel makes and sells empanadas in local grocery stores, and plans to grow their frozen food distribution. 

The Market:

We plan to expand as a fast casual restaurant, entering into a thriving industry poised to be worth $209B by 2027. In addition, our line of frozen empanadas will position us in another trending market within the US. 

Scaling:

Our goal is to scale The Damel up to 10 locations by the end of this year, including brick and mortar restaurants, food trucks, food carts, and convenient kiosks in airports and shopping centers.  

We will also open a new central kitchen in Oakland that will provide efficient distribution to our other locations. 


While most restaurants on average don't turn a profit until their third year or beyond, we were profitable in our 1st full year!
