Their first product is Flow. With hand gesture recognition, sensitive touch and precise haptics, Flow can be used to control music, heat, lights, electronics, design software, and more! More than 30 applications integrated already, like Spotify, Final Cut, & Photoshop. Why it's a big deal: Smart phones and laptops are terrible for controlling life’s most basic electronics. Opening an app to adjust your lights, sound, or heat is annoying. 255 million households plan to buy smart devices this year, and they will want to adjust those devices with a wave of the hand or turn of a dial. Soon, technology will be embedded everywhere in our furniture, kitchens, and offices. Senic is at the forefront of building beautiful natural interfaces that make technology more invisible.
The ProblemEven though the Smart Home market is over $100B and growing to 5x in the next 6 years, we know that using smart home systems can be frustrating, complicated and distracting.Smartphone and voice-enabled systems have their place but often come with big disadvantages. We’ve all experienced the frustration of ‘smart’ technology when tapping through 10 steps on your phone to turn on a light instead of flipping a switch. Or a loud voice assistant startling your partner while they sleeps next to you is a recipe for disaster. Consumers want a 3rd category of controls: haptic controls. It's similar to reading a book. Some people prefer a physical book, some use a kindle, some prefer audiobooks and some read their books on a smartphone. Many people use several of these methods, depending on the situation they find themselves in. It's the same same with physical controls like our switches and upcoming products. People want physical objects to trigger reliable actions. Join us as we bring next generation convenience to fix next to voice commands and your smartphone.Existing ProductsWe currently have 2 main products on the market. Our Friends of Hue Indoor Switch reliably controls the entire Philips Hue Universe. The wireless switch also works with any Homekit compatible device or scene via the Philips Hue bridge. The switch does not require any cables, uses energy harvesting technology and never needs to be charged. Our Friends of Hue Outdoor Switch is designed for the outdoors. It has the same features as the indoor switch but with the addition of water resistance (IP44 certified). It's the only outdoor smart home switch on the market and won the Red Dot Design Award in 2021. Future Products & ServicesWe also have several products currently in development. Part of the funding is going towards development, tooling & certification of these products:Friends of Hue - North American Form FactorWith the same great features as the 'Friends of Hue' Switch, we are designing the product to fit the standard North American standard.Smart Home Switch for Homekit & MatterWe are currently developing the second generation of our smart switches. We are upgrading the electronics and firmware to unlock more features and deeply integrate with HomeKit and Project Matter to broaden our addressable market.Project Matter unifies all the major smart home manufacturers and is set to become the new standard. Incorporating Project Matter functionality allows us to meet the needs of Philips Hue and SONOS customers, collaborate with hundreds of compatible brands and branch into use cases beyond lighting and sound (e.g. AC systems, heating, etc.). The new product allows us to address millions of new customers. The Project Matter switch will be available in all 3 form factors (Indoor, Outdoor, American).Muse BlocksThrough past products, we learned one clear thing. Not everything was bad about CDs or LPs. Only having access to 10 specific songs is no longer enough; but there are many elements about it that people love. The simplicity of use, the beauty of cover art or the social element of exchanging music is something that people miss. With Muse Blocks we are combining the best of both worlds. In the first step, you can simply tap a Muse Block with your phone to play Music on your SONOS system (above left)We just released the first version together with Sonos. We secured a licensing and distribution deal with them that allows us to create Muse Blocks for their streaming service called Sonos Radio. These are now available and are officially "works with Sonos'' certified. Next, we plan to allow users to play content from Spotify and Apple Music and have many new features and collaborations with artists planned. The next product is a standalone Muse Blocks Player (above right), a futuristic vinyl turntable. To trigger your favorite playlist, simply drop a Muse Block onto the player to play music on SONOS. The Muse Blocks Player delivers the music you want without fumbling through smartphone apps.Muse Blocks NFTsMuse Blocks create the new standard for physical interactions with digital content. Muse Blocks go beyond creating a cool experience for consumers by helping musicians. Artists struggle to make a living off streaming royalties and the market to sell physical formats of their music is so small because very few fans have a CD or record player.Artists use streaming services like Spotify, Apple Music and Soundcloud which are incredible for discovery and building an audience. Artists have a very hard time making a living wage through those services. That's where 'Muse Blocks Music' comes in which we will continue to explore in 2022. 'Muse Blocks Music' enables artists to sell physical Muse Blocks to actual fans who want to support their favorite artist. Embedded into each unique Muse Blocks is a non-fungible token (NFT) which enables the fan to experience exclusive content like a live concert, hidden tracks, or other Web3 interactions. The Muse Block NFT becomes the 'key' for fans unlock the content which they purchased. Artists can also use the NFT to build the relationship with their fans by offering airdrops in the form of access to exclusive concerts, backstage entrance, or special offers. Fans can of course trade and sell their Muse Blocks NFTs and the artist will continue to be rewarded for future transactions. Our TractionSince the release of our products, we’ve been growing at an average of over 70% year over year. With the release of our new products, this rate can increase. In 2021, we’ve reached $3.3M with accumulative revenue of over $7M.Our additional traction highlights include: Shipped 100K+ units to customersMost customer have more than 3 products95% of customer with daily usage10% of customers returning customers looking to expand their systemAvailable in over 150 physical stores and growing4.6 and 4.8 stars on Amazon5 products from idea to market and scaleRecipient of 2 Red Dot Design awards and German Design awardMaterial Financing covered through manufacturing partnerBacked by Y Combinator, American and European investorsOfficial Partnership with market leaders like Sonos and Philips Huesome of our official partnersOur Go-to-Market StrategyWe’re following a strategy very similar to our partner companies like Sonos or Philips Hue. In the first step, we focus on end consumers. This way, we gain a lot of reach and awareness.Current channels:Sales through our website www.senic.comAmazon (currently 5 countries and growing)Many other online and offline resellers (e.g. Tink, MediaMarkt, Saturn, Gravis, Power, etc.)In the second step, we expand to the professional segment (installers, architects, builders, hotels, etc.), who are installing smart home and speaker systems directly into homes. We will continue to focus on consumer channels in the coming years, but will branch into the professional segment similar to the Sonos and Philips Hue sales strategy.Market & FinancesRevenueAs mentioned before, we’re growing at an average of +70% in revenue year over year and have reached an accumulative sum of over $,7000,000.We plan our finances carefully based on historic data and moderate growth estimations.Fixed Cost & Operating ProfitWhile showing strong revenue growth, we currently run our company at $80K per month which is mostly going towards salaries (ca. $60K) and some smaller fees like insurances or software services. On top of this, we have marketing costs which vary depending on the cost to acquire a customer (roughly $20K per month at the moment). In order to keep fixed cost low and still continue scaling, we’re working with a number of external partners (like our manufacturing partner instead of having internal assembly workers). This slightly increases our per device cost but allows us to continue scaling without increasing our fixed cost significantly.Senic is growing its revenue continuously and this trend is very likely to continue. We’re now moving into profitability in 2022 with the help of the Wefunder financing, giving us an extended runway.* We will then have the option to pursue an even steeper growth scenario.*Forward-looking projections cannot be guaranteed.Material FinancingOne of the very special things about Senic is our material financing partnership. Usually, companies need to pay for materials, turn them into a product and then generate revenue from those products. This is a heavy financial burden for companies, especially as they grow. Many startups like Pebble have famously died from this. At Senic, we’ve secured an agreement with one of our partners who pre-finances all of our materials. Essentially this means that we only pay for materials once we’ve generated the revenue which actually gives us an extra financial boost. It also means that all investment is going into sales and development rather than financing materialsInvestmentWhile we’ve shown very healthy growth, we’ve always operated with very little financial resources which hasn’t allowed us to make some important investments that allow us to grow even faster. However, now that we’ve outsourced our assembly and stabilised many systems, there are a number of very obvious, low hanging fruits to pick. This is what the funding from Wefunder is dedicated to!Buy tools and pay for certification for some of the new product releases mentioned above.Create a safety buffer towards in case things go differently as expected (some things always do - Covid is a good example)Hire a Salesperson (we had to stop reaching out to more resellers since we didn’t have any time - this way we can grow our distribution network)Hire a COO - Currently the founders are still taking care of functions like Finance and HR instead of focusing on Sales and Product Development. This will help to focus our resources and improve our organizational excellence including investor relations and reporting.Close Partnership with Agencies to grow advertisement business and Content businessOur Founding StoryFelix, Tobias and Philip (from left to right), the three founders of Senic come from a long family tradition in designing and manufacturing hardware. Before Senic, the three friends worked on things like quantum computers and human computer interaction with companies like Audio, Merck or the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence. Philip and Tobias know each other from a scholarship program in which they worked for technology companies in Asia. Tobias and Felix are friends from back home. A few years ago, we started seeing a concerning trend. We had dinner and one of our friends was spending the entire time on his phone and we couldn’t get him off. Physically he was there but he was not with us. We’re all guilty of the same issue but it made us realize how bad it got. The smartphone has brought so much convenience and benefits to our lives but it has come with a number of negative side effects. “Attention Designers” at large tech companies design apps with the human psychology in mind and in a way that we spend more and more time in front of screens. Today, the average adult spends more than 8 hours a day in front of screens and negative side effects like distraction, isolation and depression are on the rise. We believe that technology should support us in our creativity, relationships or well-being but should do so from the background with us humans at it’s center. Join us in reimagining smart home controls and we live in the future!
Tobias is a designers / programmer / maker who grew up building traditional building automation systems. One thing that we would like to highlight is that Muse Blocks is 90% software and 10% hardware and there are many exciting business models behind Muse Blocks. For one, we monetize the hardware. Customers can build their collection or musicians can promote their music. Today, musicians still try to sell CDs at the end of a concert but nobody has a CD player anymore. Muse Blocks fixes this problem. Apart from that, there are very existing software business models with recurring revenue in sight. Once artists have used Muse Blocks to promote their music, they want to understand the analytics behind this to improve their marketing and content. We can provide these analytics. There is also a big play here with NFTs that we talk about on the main page. Artists should use services like Spotify and Apple Music to reach the largest number of people. Unfortunately, they have a hard time making a living of those streaming services. Muse Block NFTs should allow artists to sell and share exclusive content like a live concert or exclusive access to a concert for example. There are more business models on our list but I hope I could give a short summary of some of them.
Thanks for the quick reply Tobias, excellent. Thanks for the question 🙌 You can actually buy Muse Blocks from most countries in Europe and North America right now. Since we're assembling and shipping from Germany, this takes a few days though which is not the greatest customer experience and we want to improve that. We've actually initiated the research for this project already. We're currently evaluating our options and aim to have logistics setup in Q2 or latest Q3 this year. Adapting switches to Sonos? YES!! ❤️ I wish I could be more specific but there is some work going on in the background. Sonos and Senic are 'soul mates' and we're discussing many different topics for the future. Our very first product was actually a 'switch for sonos'. People really LOVED the product (Muse Blocks were actually born out of that experience) but it was too expensive for a broad consumer market and had technical limitations. We've progressed quite a bit since then and are excited about the next steps. I hope I could answer your questions. Have an amazing week!! Great question. Thank you!! // Our switches: We have 3 main, direct competitors. These are 'traditional' switch makers but we've already established ourselves as the clear market leader in Europe. We tend to repeat this in the US where there is only one competitor. The reason for our performance has multiple aspects. These are traditional switch makers who have a lot of experience selling to electricians but don't have any experience selling to end consumers (think of Amazon for example). What's also interesting is that most of the time, these companies don't actually have any internal development units. So they rather partner with companies like us and leverage our technologies which is a win for us. For example, we've partnered with the leading switch maker in Europe (Gira) which gives us some sort of 'monopoly' to address millions of homes that use switches in this design language. In a way, we turn potential competitors into our partners. // Muse Blocks: Muse Blocks are a truly new and revolutionary product. I've mentioned this in one of the comments as well. Vinyl records have been growing for 14 consecutive years. Only last year, the number of vinyl records doubled to over 40 million units in the US alone. From all the experience that we've been lucky to gather of the past years, I'm convinced that Muse Blocks will be bigger than vinyl with much more interesting business model. We have a first mover advantage here which we should leverage by moving fast. The only competitors are alternative solutions like the phone and voice and this is important to understand! Similar to how people use physical books alongside an ebook reader and audio books, we will see all three methods in our smart homes: Visual, speech and haptic interfaces. I hope I could answer your questions!! Have a great week! These include speech (Ubi), gesture recognition (Thalmic Labs) or tangible UI (Senic) for example. That's why it's impossible to apply one standard to all all user interfaces; it depends on the above factors. Here is what we know from human computer interaction, psychology and biology however: We, as humans, were built and also enjoy to touch and experience the world around us in a tangible way. A quarter of our entire motor cortex is completely devoted to our hand for example. Thalmic Labs focuses on gesture recognition. Gesture recognition is great a) whenever the use is timely limited (and thus not tiring on the body) b) when complex movements are required and other abilities like speech are limited. A great example for this is the use in the military where soldiers are limited in their communication and need to use complex gestures to signal robots or other soldiers but the use of these commands is limited in it's time. This does not apply to your home or to 10 hours of daily work. What you need here is non-straining, non-intrusive and natural interactions that give you speed and precision. Nothing beats tangible interfaces in this regard.
Hi Team, I have not seen any responses to the questions here.. Thanks so much for your questions. 🙏 1) Pl explain about the link between this startup & the Senic (GmbH) based out of Berlin. Will the exit criteria be triggered when Senic GmbH gets listed in Börse Berlin ? 2) Were all the previous seed investments from Target Partners, Bichmere Ventures, Gira were raised for Senic GmbH or Senic (US)? >> Tobias: I will answer the first two questions together since they are closely related: The setup is pretty simple. Senic is a standard US Delaware C-Corp like most companies on this platform. In order to leverage our existing manufacturing and supply chain that we grew up in, we opened a German subsidiary in order to operate there. This subsidiary is 100% owned by the US Inc. which is a standard process for companies like us. So all investments have gone into our US Inc. and will continue to do so. If we do go public or acquired, this would be a standard US process as well. 3) What is the reason for launching products in two completely different segment i.e. Smart Home & Music? Don’t you think over diversification is a challenge especially for a start-up? >> Tobias: Both product lines (our switches and Muse Blocks) are controls for smart homes. Muse Blocks were actually born out of the experiences we gained from our switches. Many of the customers we talked to explained that they loved our 'quick access' function on our switches which allowed them to quickly start their favorite light scene or playlist on Sonos without digging through apps. But they also explained that they wanted access to even more 'favorites' and have access in a more visual way. This was very interesting and we started building different kinds of prototypes. Muse Blocks are the result of that process. You can think of Muse Blocks and the Muse Blocks player as the new generation of the vinyl record and vinyl player. They are designed to make the music experience in homes simple, special, fun and social. There is a reason why vinyl has been growing for 14 consecutive years. From 2020 to 2021 alone, vinyl sales doubled to over 40 million units in the US alone. We strongly believe that Muse Blocks will be bigger than vinyl records! Similar to vinyl records, there is of course a huge music industry component to it. We'll be working with Artists, Labels, Podcasts and more. These partners will act as multipliers and enable very exciting business models. At the end of the day, this only works if a person at home can actually enjoy their music. That's why we're really focused on nailing the smart home side of this product. 4) Do you have any patent on these products to prevent other large players like Amazon/ Philips / Apple / Spotify capture the market? >> Tobias: Yes. We have two patents pending and want to use some of the WeFunder money to continue growing our patent portfolio. Apart from patents, I think it's important to mention a few other protection mechanism. One aspects are the unique partnerships that we're building. One good example is our official licensing deal with Sonos which allows us to create Muse Blocks with 'Sonos Radio' artwork. There are a few more already in the making and we'll keep everyone updated on this. Another aspect is our software services and their protective effects. I can't go into details here just yet but this will create a thick, protective layer. Also a realistic note from my past experience: We're very closely connected to the companies with friends working in leadership positions and we're pretty far ahead in some of these topics. So the most likely scenario would be for them to make an investment or acquisition offer instead of fighting. Our products work WITH those companies, not against them.
