Over the course of one night, they engage in a series of increasingly intimate conversations until a shocking revelation sends everything spiraling out of control. This intimate character study explores motherhood, femininity, and the intersection of personal life with art.Our AudienceSee You Then will engage audiences who love Richard Linklater’s Before Trilogy, the films of Hirokazu Kore-Eda and Barry Jenkins. Our immersive cinematography and layered character studies will draw audiences into the conflicted emotional state of our leads.Trans and Asian-American narratives are taking the spotlight at both the box office and film festivals, finding mainstream appeal and a passionate built-in audience. Movies like Crazy Rich Asians, Always Be My Maybe and The Farewell have capitalized on this previously untapped market. Similarly, stories centered around trans characters have found great success -- both on television with Orange is the New Black and Pose; and in movies such as A Fantastic Woman and Tangerine. Our target audience combines these two vibrant demographics, while also speaking authentically to a larger audience. We will maintain a strong presence on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube, in order to connect to audiences. Vanishing Angle will bring their expertise and industry relationships to the project, ensuring that we have the best possible festival run, release, and distribution.Mari will be editing the project out of the Vanishing Angle offices and our contracts are organized to give investors privileged returns so that they will see their complete ROI before our team sees a dollar. If the film comes in under budget, the remaining funds will be rolled into the digital marketing of the film, to maximize our festival premiere and the release of the film.Mari directing on the set of SwimDirector's StatementIn 2014, I came out to my parents as trans. My dad offered some cautionary advice, saying that even if I transitioned, all of my personal issues wouldn’t suddenly disappear. At the time I didn’t want to believe him, but today his words ring true. Despite all of the positive effects transitioning has had on my life, I’m still a people pleaser, a workaholic, and someone who continues to struggle with body dysmorphia and depression.Much of See You Then is born out of my personal experiences. For years, the guilt of leading-on my exes plagued me. At the time, it felt like those relationships were a life-line, a way to consider myself “normal.” Maybe — I told myself — maybe if I kept that relationship going and had a family, then that would prevent me from going down the path to my true self. Ultimately, that fantasy ended and a different sort of guilt and depression began to set in— the guilt and depression of never having my own family. Children are an important part of my life and having grandchildren has always been a big dream of my parents. Choosing to transition meant that my chances of having children significantly dropped. It took me many years to admit that this was a possibility. All of these thoughts were rolling around in my head as I began to conceptualize See You Then. The characters of Kris and Naomi slowly took shape, and I truly fell in love with them. For all of their insecurities and failings, these women are undeniably human. See You Then centers around the universal truth that no matter how much we change, part of us will always remain the same.- Mari Walker, Director & Co-WriterOur FilmsOur team has made a number of short and feature films, which have screened at major film festivals around the world and been released independently and through distribution companies like IFC Midnight and The Orchard. Because of how the questions were showing up on my feed, I didn't see it until now. I will answer your income question very similarly to another question that was asked of us. And I'll answer the theater question in a different thread. Candidly, most independent films do not see enough income on the film to reach a profit point. Film is considered a high risk investment. The difference between film and other high risk investments (i.e. other startups, tech companies, manufacturing companies, etc) is that a finished film has the ability to continue generating income in perpetuity. There will always be ways to make the film available to audiences, and as the cast and filmmakers continue to do other projects in the future, it can re-spark interest in the film. This is also a unique film because of its focus on LGBTQIA topics, and its representation of characters on screen that are under represented in the industry. There is a large community that supports projects such as this, and many people who want to see people like themselves represented on screen. Mari Walker is also a unique voice in the landscape of filmmaking, which is one of the most important factors we've found in making a film product that stands out. It's clear to us that she is the best person to tell this story, that that comes through in the filmmaking. Finally, Vanishing Angle is uniquely set up as both a production studio, but also as a sales company and distributor. We do not need to rely on others to get the film into the marketplace. While we will seek a distribution partner with more resources, and a strong brand, we also have the ability to bring the film directly to audiences and can effectively market the film with our marketing division, FireShip (www.FireShipMarketing.com). We've recently found great success self releasing our film THUNDER ROAD, and will be releasing a new film next January. That's the long answer. The short answer is YES, we plan on making an income on the movie.
Hi again Wedzer, in regards to your question about theaters, out plan and goal would be for a theatrical release of the film. Mari is a very cinematic storyteller, and even though the movie largely consists of a conversation between two characters, it very much feels like it was meant to the "big screen." Ultimately, a lot of factors will decide if we ultimately play theaters. First will be our distribution partner and their strategy (e.g. If Netflix makes an offer to acquire the film, it likely wouldn't come with a theatrical component. Depending on the terms of the offer, we may need to consider it). Second, we'll have to evaluate the marketplace at the time. If we release in theaters, we will want to set ourselves up for success. We will have to see how the film plays at festivals in a theater, what other films are playing in theaters at the time of our eventual release, and what the landscape of theaters is in a post pandemic world. I can tell you, out of the 12 feature films that we've produced to date, 9 have played in theaters. So, that's pretty good odds.
Hi, hope everyone is well! My apologies for my delayed response. If you don't mind I have just a few more questions. 1. Do you anticipate issuing additional units or having a secondary round of funding which could dilute or adversely affect current investor's holdings? 2. 70- 80% of movies fail to make a profit. How do you intend to attempt to defy this statistic especially given that this is a low budget indie film? 3. It says investors are being paid with net profits. Historically speaking after payments are made to the production company and other partners and entities there are usually no net profits left to distribute to the movie shell corp or llc. How likely is it that investors are going to be repaid their principal and earn a return? What fail-safes do you have in place in order to avoid the historical outcome of everything going to the production companies and other entities while excluding everyone else? Let me try again now. 1. We do NOT anticipate issuing additional units or having a secondary round of funding past the $250,000 that could dilute or adversely affect current investor's holdings. 2. Yes, you are correct, most independent films do not see a profit. Film is considered a high risk investment. The difference between film and other high risk investments (i.e. other startups, tech companies, manufacturing companies, etc) is that a finished film has the ability to continue generating revenue in perpetuity. 3. Most of this is answered above. To elaborate: Yes, historically after exhibitors (e.g. Theaters, iTunes, etc) take their cut (50-30%), then the distributors recoup their expenses (probably around $30-$100k for a film of this size), and take their fee (20-35%), then sales agents take their fee (10-20%), and SAG residuals (around 7.5%) are paid, it leaves less for the investors. In this instance, the production company, Vanishing Angle, only shares in the 50% producer side of the profit, which is shared only AFTER the film is "in profit" and the investors have recouped their investment + 20%. The way we can help increase the probability that the investors see a return is to avoid bad deals with distributors and sales agents by having the power to do it ourselves. Many filmmakers are left with little option, but we've worked hard to create an infrastructure that gives us the freedom to make the best choices possible to make sure the film reaches audiences and revenue flows to the appropriate parties (the filmmakers and the investors, as opposed to sales companies and distributors who come in at the last minute, and capitalize on the hard work others have done). Please let me know if this answers your questions. Thank you for your patience. I'll be sure to get back to you quicker if you have any additional questions in the future.
Hi I actually have a few questions. 1. Let me see if i can answer your questions to the best of my ability. Please note that none of this response should be taken as an official legal stance on the production or investment, and that if you're interested in investing you should carefully read the Operating Agreement and Investor Funding Agreement. We also recommend you consult with an attorney and tax accountant. My responses are based on my own personal understanding of the financial structure of the film and and my personal experiences as a producer on 15 feature films. 1. For the production period, we do accounting internally at Vanishing Angle. For past projects its a mix of real time tracking with document in Google Sheets, and bank reconciliations through Quickbooks or Greenslate. We then cross references the two methods to make sure nothing is missed. The process varies when we get to the distribution phase. Depending on the size and complication of the international and domestic sales and release, we could use a third party collections account. We would make WeFunder a party on that account and revenue to be distributed by them. If the scope of the sales & distribution is smaller and simpler we will handle accounting in house with a similar method to what is used in production, using both Google Sheets and Quickbooks or Greenslate. All tax accounting and filing is done by a third party CPA. Historically we've use EMT Tax Services. 2. The film is on schedule for production this coming January. Post production is estimated to complete in summer '20, preparing us for the winter/spring '21 festival submissions which will begin in Sept '20. Our goal would be to premiere at a major festival sometime between January - May '21 (i.e. Sundance, Berlin, SXSW, Tribeca, Cannes. etc) or a regional festival summer '20. Based on the premiere we would hope to a secure domestic distribution partner. There is a chance we would begin seeing revenue at this stage, with the distribution company paying a "minimum guarantee" once we deliver the film (so as early as summer '21). We would hope to commercial release the film in the fall of '21 or winter of '22, at which point we would see revenue after the distribution costs are recouped. Distributors typically report account every quarter, at which point they typically have 30 days to pay the production entity (i.e. SYT Films), we would then make a distribution to WeFunder before the end of that current Quarter. 3. For this project, the intellectual property stays with Mari, the writer/director, so there would be no direct benefit to investors for the rights to future productions, spinoffs, reboots, etc. However, in the event that would happen, it would surely signify this project has done well enough to merit such actions and the investors would likely be in a really good place (financially speaking). Also, such additional properties existing in the world would only benefit audiences demand for this project. So, it would still be a win overall. 4. Per my notes above, whenever revenue exists, it will be distributed to Investors quarterly. 5. We do not have a potential earnings statement. Such models in independent film at this time are often mis-leading to investors, so we tend to avoid them. The marketplace is so rapidly changing on a day-to-day basis because of changes to exhibition platforms (i.e. streaming services). What we can point to is a track record of continual critical and audience success with projects of this size and scope the past 9 years Vanishing Angle has been production projects. The revenue streams, timing and amounts for those projects have all been wildly different, based on the specifics of each project. 6. Yes, returns are paid in perpetuity. 7. As a production company, we have experience with bonding films, most recently for a studio movie we shot earlier this year. "See You Then" will NOT be a bonded film. A film of his size and scope is considerably a lower risk financially in comparison to films that are typically bonded. If we were to bond the film, it would increase the budget of the film to accommodate the bond company and Their needs, and therefore, increase the financial risk of the project, which would defeat the purpose on bonding the project in the first place. 8. We are not pursuing any tax incentives. For the budget level we are making the film at, there are a limited amount of states that we would meet the minimum threshold. The California tax incentive is not really designed or set up to benefit films of this size. It would waste more financial resources to try and travel to another stage, and would negate the resources we have by shooting on "home turf." Because we are a very active company with both film and commercials, we have a strong bases of crew, vendors and favors in Los Angeles that will greatly benefit this project. 9. For revenue received by the producers from the distribution company(s), a small amount would first go to SAG residuals, or a collections account (if we have one), then it would go to paying off any debit or deferments. Then it would go directly to investor recoupment and their preferred rate of return, prior to being "in profit" where those profits will split 50/50 between investors and the producer pool (which includes points given to actors, crew, etc). 10. It shouldn't have to much of an effect with the exception of residuals that are required to pay out immediately as the film begins making money. Its roughly around 6.7% of gross revenue. 11. You will receive a K-1 for your tax purposes as an investor. Please forgive any spelling or grammar errors as I write this. And don't hesitate to let me know if you have any additional questions. I am happy to be helpful in any way I can.
Hello! Social media is one of the key aspects to engaging an audience and releasing a film of this size. It is of the most importance to us. We've historically had a lot of success in social promotion in the past with our projects like THUNDER ROAD. The strategy is always shifting, depending on what tools are available, and what is going on in the world. But generally, the key is to hone in on our direct audience first, and engage them. The more specific we get to start of WHO wants to see movies like SEE YOU THEN, and WHO will like movies like SEE YOU THEN, the more success we can eventually have broadly. So we'll build a list of categories that we think make-up our specific audience, and target them with some assets (stills, trailers, posts, etc). We'll use those early assets to gage what is working and not working on our targeting depending on overall engagement. The goal is to hone in on the right tags by the time the film is commercially available. Let me know if this answered you question, or if there are more specific questions you have. I am happy to answer them.
Please would you answer clearly this - Just For example If I invest $500 - when /how/ how much(money or %) return will I get ?
Hi Prakash, thank you for your question. I will try and answer it as best I can. If you invest $500, the percentage of that investment will change over time. For instance, with our current raise of $153,250, your $500 would put it at $153,750. So, $500 would be worth .325% of that. So for every $100 the film earned in revenue, you would receive 3 cents until the film receives $184,500 (the principal investment + 20%), at which point you would have received $600 (your $500 investment + 20%). Once the film is "in Profit", revenue is split 50/50 with the investors and the producers. So, at that point, you would receive .163% of all profit (16 cents per hundred dollars). If we raise the full $250,000 goal, that proportion changes. At that point a $500 investment is worth 2% of the total. Revenue will be generated for the film through sales of the film (i.e. Theaters, iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, etc). One that exhibitor takes their cut, the net revenue will pass to the distributor, who takes their fee and recoups their expenses, then a sales again (should we decide to have one), who takes their fee and recoups their expenses, then the film flows into the LLC we have set up. At that point, we report it to WeFunder and send them the money to disburse to the investors. Revenue is typically reported quarterly at each stage it changes hand, and then the parties have 30-60 days to disburse that payment, so it can take a few months for money to flow to the final parties. To be clear, revenue on the film, and return on investment is NOT guaranteed. However, we feel confident this film fits a targeted niche audience that will be very supportive. We also feel like we're making the film at a cost that increases the chances for recoupment. Please let me know if you have any additional questions.
Hi Nana, thank you for your question.
