Currently, kids & teens are in a widespread mental health crisis. Peer-reviewed research points to smartphones, especially social media, as a major part of the problem. Social media gives kids social comparison and performative identities in place of authentic connection and the healthy, independent coming-of-age experiences every generation before has taken for granted. We’re out to help parents give kids the phone features they're ready for, as they're ready for them, so that kids grow up tech-savvy and emotionally healthy. Our Product MissionPut humans back in the driver's seat of technology with a phone that helps kids & teens achieve their noblest intentions.Pinwheel is on track to land in the top 100 on the Inc. 5,000 fastest growing private companies in America list by the end of 2023 (the first time we'll qualify with the amount of financial history required). Pinwheel has been featured on the Today Show, USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Android Central, hundred+ local news TV shows, and various influential blogs, podcasts, and media sites. What problem does the Pinwheel Smartphone solve?Kids get their first smartphone at 10-12. They are not ready for the adult world inside.Parents lack the tools and information to introduce technology gradually and with good oversight. The result of “too much, too soon” is a mental health crisis in our kids.In the USA, the National Institute of Health has declared a state of emergency in response to the deterioration of our youth's mental health. How does the Pinwheel smartphone work? We have built a suite of software on top the Android Operating System. It's not just one app. Settings, VPN (virtual private network), mobile-device-management, contacts, messages, launcher, and caregiver apps as well as backend services combine to provide the full offering.Parents can remotely configure the phone to have different apps and functions in different contexts, like school and home. Easy "off" button allows a parent to stop screen time at the touch of a button on their own phone, while maintaining emergency contact communication. We have over 1,000 apps for parents to add to their child’s phone. Our curated App Library provides unique safety ratings and risk information to support parents’ decision-making. Kids cannot access any app store. No social media is available. Some newer app options from startups that are built with mental health in mind are promoted instead. GPS location and history. Contact management can be shifted through three maturation stages: from parent-controlled, to child-led, to teen managed, with text history remotely visible to parents throughout the journey. Visualization of our technology stack with Pinwheel proprietary technology in the pink box. How does the Pinwheel business model work? We offer phone models from leading manufacturers (ie Samsung). Each phone comes with a $15/month subscription to the parental guidance software. The product comes with the software pre-installed to make getting started easy. Parents have their own access to parental guidance tools on iOS, Android, and web to monitor and provide guidance to their kids. Where is Pinwheel Sold? Pinwheel is sold mostly on pinwheel.com directly to customers. Reviews matter! Hear straight from our customers...Google, TrustPilot, Amazon, Pinwheel.com combined reviews: We’ve been really happy with our Pinwheel experience. It was just what we were looking for our kiddo. Customer service is also outstanding! Nothing but good things to say about this company.""So far this phone service for my 11- and 14-year-olds has been really great. It is limited enough that I don't feel like they can get into trouble with the phones but has enough options that I can manage to make it a smartphone that they are happy with.""Exactly what we were looking forWe purchased a Pinwheel phone for our son last summer, and it has been an amazing experience. I've been able to easily customize settings for my son using the app. On two occasions I wasn't sure how to proceed, but the live chat on the website was able to assist me promptly and provide me with the information I needed. We have his phone set to only receive texts/calls from approved numbers and it has worked perfectly. Furthermore, approving new contacts is super fast and easy on the parent app (as is revoking them if they're no longer needed). A+""Pinwheel is the best out there!Pinwheel is fantastic! I searched high and low for a good option for my son that has the parental control I require and the flexibility and "cool" factor that he wants. And their customer service is top notch! Cannot say enough good things about Pinwheel!""Awesome service for a first cellphone…Awesome service for a first cell phone for your child! Really cool features, great range of controls. Absolutely everything you would want for your child to be on the phone safely! Customer Service was super prompt and helpful as well!""Pinwheel has been amazing! When looking for a phone for my son, Pinwheel came up in my search. I was a bit skeptical because I had never heard of this company but, after having this phone for 5 months now, I have only had a good experience. Customer service is 100% amazing too. If you have a question about anything, there is always someone there to help. I am very pleased with this purchase and would recommend them to anyone looking for a monitored phone for their child.""Mom, wife, nurseWe love that we can add apps and permit more freedom as he grows and becomes more responsible and aware. Also, the customer service is AMAZING!""The solution that worksEasy parental control dashboard, son likes that it looks and operates like a regular smartphone, but he can't work around it like other parental control apps we have tried... This mom is a happier mom and less stressed because of this phone."Exciting New ProductWe are really excited to be adding to our existing suite of kid appropriate software with PinwheelGPT, an AI-chat interface app designed specifically for kids & teens. Most importantly, it was difficult to include people who were not already accredited investors—a qualification determined largely by wealth. But the idea never left our minds. We are passionate about building Pinwheel with real parents who care, and this community round is an excellent way to materialize that commitment. We’re doing this because the dynamics of the community around Pinwheel change for the better when the people who are using it for their children's benefit are also participating owners of it. This not only provides good for our company, but it also presents an opportunity for you to participate in the benefits —including the financial upside. In recent years, doing a community round like this one has become more viable because of regulatory changes and the rise of companies like Wefunder, which makes the process simple. We’re thrilled that Circadian and Drumbeat - professional venture capitalists —have both invested again in this round. We are even more excited to enable hundreds if not thousands of others to invest alongside these groups. We want to make it clear, however, that just because you can invest in Pinwheel, it doesn’t mean you should. Investments are risky—especially in startups, which have a habit of dying, pivoting, or simply not making enough money. Pinwheel is still a young company, and we are still proving that there is a large market for safe and age-appropriate technology for kids aged 9 to 15. If you don’t have money to spare, don’t spend it on this. If, however, you share our belief that Pinwheel can grow its financial impact alongside its social impact, then this investment could be worth a shot. We are at the forefront of creating a new generation of technology designed specifically for kids and teens. This work is ambitious and exciting, and it's certainly meaningful. We’d love to have you by our side as we build this new intentional tech ecosystem for our children together. For a longer explanation of how I got started, see this video!
Dane (Georgia Tech, Stanford) is the CEO & Founder at Pinwheel. You are after my own heart, as I do believe that businesses should exist to make money. However, the general theory of venture capital is not a bad thing (that you burn money in order to grow). So anytime you are looking at a company burning money, the question should not only be "how much money did they burn", but "how much growth did they achieve with that burn" (imho). This is captured a number of ways, but one way would be the "burn multiple", as popularized by VC David Sacks. In this framework, you think of the burn rate as purchasing a certain amount of growth. A top tier company will be buying $1 of growth or better for every $1 of burn, whereas a bottom tier VC-backed company would be at greater than $4 of burn for every $1 of growth (and remember that less than 1% of any companies are investable by VC's, so we're already talking about the top of the heap in the startup world). This gets a little complicated, but in 2021, Pinwheel's net added revenue was $1.98M whereas burn was -$1.72M. The ratio is below 1 at .87! Very good, especially for an early company! In 2022, the net revenue added was $2.68M, whereas burn was -$1.96M, so the ratio dropped actually to .72 (getting better!) It wouldn't be possible to yet compare 2023 because our business is seasonal with holidays representing a large % of annual sales, but we project the number to continue to be elite! The question is not when can the company be profitable, it's when should the company become profitable (again imho). We could be profitable now, in fact. We would have to cut very important growth initiatives and largely freeze the product in place, and we don't see that as the best pathway. I can't say exactly when the company should move to a $0 cash burn (as it depends on future availability of capital markets and the growth opportunities that are in front of us), but I think it's at least 2 years away, and we are managing the business such that we can pull back to profitability at any time if we must. I'm very optimistic on the "responsible and well-measured" pathway for deployment of growth capital, and that is the school of thought to which I subscribe. This means I am not the type of founder who can burn massive amounts of capital at leisure with no commensurate growth attached and sleep well at night! Investors deserve better than that. I hope this long answer helps!
I've been a Pinwheel parent for about 15mos now and I'm quite satisfied with the parent experience. The scheduling, routines, contact control, and ability to see text history in real time is fantastic. That said, my eleven year old is not satisfied and I can't blame her. While the app boutique is quite extensive, the majority of what's available is not appealing. The games are primarily geared toward the early el/preschool crowd, and there seem to be countless religious, mindfulness, and paired product apps that are not applicable for us. There are also restrictions on which apps are made available based on if a browser is required for login (though this last point seems to be turning a corner with the recent addition of MyQ). The OS is marketed as growing with your child, but it's not hitting the mark in that regard. I do feel it's too young for her in it's current state. And to be honest, even my nine year old would be disappointed. Ultimately, she doesn't use the phone that much other than to be reachable, which is not having the desired effect of teaching healthy digital behaviors. To be clear, I believe in the company, the product, the intention, and I want to invest...but there is this piece of me that is reluctant because of what I've detailed above. We have had many parents tell us they value that Pinwheel "holds the line" on many apps, especially "no social media". However, certainly parents also want to have more freedom in choosing apps for their children (especially later teens). Because we believe that 1. parents are the ultimate decision-makers for their kids, 2. boundaries are paradoxically freeing and 3. parents are trying to raise kids that can "handle" personal technology completely solo by 18, we are working on a "graduation level" of the Pinwheel system where parents/teens WILL be able to access the vast majority of the Play Store and decide which apps are right more freely. We seek to do this in a way that helps our parents complete the "job to be done" of raising an adult that is not controlled by their personal tech. They have participated in the round as verified here through Wefunder, and have invested the max their charter allows to ensure enough diversification required inside of their fund! On why crowdfunding - consumer companies receive benefit from the marketing exercise as well as funding for growth! I also addressed this in the main text on the page "We are passionate about building Pinwheel with real parents who care, and this community round is an excellent way to materialize that commitment. We’re doing this because the dynamics of the community around Pinwheel change for the better when the people who are using it for their children's benefit are also participating owners of it. As the raise is about to close, a couple questions. You said in response to my comment that you can't say much about iOS at this time. What is the meaning for this phrase from the description: "Parents have their own access to parental guidance tools on iOS, Android, and web to monitor and provide guidance to their kids." then? What are the tools on iOS / web? I understand that the majority (or all) of your current revenue is from hardware / Android, but I want to know what the web / iOS portion of that statement entails. Also, since understandably Android has fewer restrictions for you guys to do what you do, are there any plans to do this outside the USA (or are you already doing this)? I ask since iOS has slightly larger market share in the USA (and children are much more likely to want an iPhone), but this is different worldwide. We did this wefunder round to bring the community the opportunity to participate in the upside. Many "successful" fund raises will spend half their raise on ads driving random supporters from FB etc, we were never going to do that as it doesn't make financial sense and those investors aren't here for the mission. We're very happy with the participation from the community and the opportunity we've been able to provide to those who know us best to be on this journey with us! We did 5.3m in rev in 2023, with our projections on hardware revenue down from offering a high growth "free phone" offer at Christmas, which penciled out very well and was the right call. As far as additional capital raises, we will add additional capital this year! We also plan to break even as a business by the end of 2024, meaning capital raises wouldn't be necessary after we hit that milestone! Thanks!
Hi Dane, Would love a post-holiday-season financial update once that is ready. It is great that 16% of your sales now come from Amazon. Some of your listings have pretty low ratings on Amazon (3/5 stars), but the complaints seem to be mostly due to devices themselves breaking quickly. Do you have any insights if that has anything to do with the OS? If it's purely a hardware issue, of course Pinwheel isn't responsible. Also, can you elaborate more on your competition? For the companies that have "static feature phones", how difficult is it for them to do what you guys do, ie make their phones also grow as the child grows? Lastly, you mention in the overview that you have some iOS tools as well. What are these tools? Seems like the phones themselves are all android, and in the USA at least, iOS have a bigger market share than Android at this point, so would be good to hear from you what developments are taking place on the iOS front. Otherwise, very impressive revenue and growth! Happy holidays! We had a great holiday season :) Amazon has the slim and the plus. The Plus is rated higher than the Slim, but both have very few reviews. Amazon makes it very difficult to build reviews quickly. The hardware does seem to be the issue. You can find statistically significant reviews on Google here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/YmeeTMb1tTyesWwD9 While we have reviewed over 1,200 apps and made them available on Pinwheel, Gabb and Troomi have reviewed only a couple of hundred. So we are 5-6 x more productive on that front than our competitors. In addition we continue to add more features to grow with the child, and I would say we are 2 years ahead due to our focus. On iOS no company can create the same level of features as we have on Android due to Apple's policies and restrictions on third parties. I can't say much more about iOS at this time.
You're welcome to use them now.
