IoT + AI = BuzzBox

BuzzBox is an AI-powered device that converts any beehive into a smart beehive. We can detect if the bees inside get sick, too cold, too humid, or even if they’re getting stolen! The data streams to a mobile app, so the beekeeper knows exactly which hive has a problem. Early detection is key to minimizing colony losses, allowing the beekeeper to fix issues before they spread to the rest of their inventory. Cloud Data + NLP = OSBeehives App & BeeBase

The free-to-download OSBeehives App is used by 7,500 beekeepers around the world. It allows beekeepers to log their inspection records in a 100% structured and computer-readable format. This means that the millions of data points and estimations generated by BuzzBox can be directly compared to tens of thousands of individual beekeeping observations provided by our community, allowing our AI to generate more accurate and completely new estimates over time.

As beekeepers, one of the main frustrations we have suffered is that most of the information related to beekeeping is spread around books, blog posts, videos, with lots of contradictory information and differing opinions. To solve this problem, we started developing a free BeeBase (Beekeeping Knowledge Base), with the goal of using Natural Language Processing or NLP technology to structure, organize, and make searchable as much of the information as possible that beekeepers have been collectively gathering for the last 10,000 years. We believe that technology is not the only answer to the problems that the beekeeping industry is facing, and that structuring and making readily available all of this prior knowledge is both necessary and beneficial for the beekeeping industry. 

The knowledge base will expand the OSBeehives ecosystem, bringing more users to our site who we can convert into App users and paying customers for other products.

Beekeeping products and services generate $10 billion of revenue yearly across the globe. Today, most of that money goes to manual labor and servicing losses. In the near future, technology will replace most of that manual labor and increase productivity, while decreasing losses.

We expect that the Total Addressable Market for beekeeping technology will be around $1.5 billion a year, with a modest 15% of revenues captured through monitoring hardware and software, as well as dedicated two-sided marketplaces and platforms for the exchange of products and services.

Beekeeping Knowledge Base

The BeeBase is a knowledge base, aggregating the last 10,000 years of global beekeeping knowledge and the latest data-driven insights into the world’s most holistic bee-related information source.

There are over 6,200 beekeepers in the US, each typically keeping several thousands of beehives. Each hive is worth an average of $500, and owners need to keep tabs on the health of their livestock. Problem is, each hive must be painstakingly opened by hand, checked frame-by-frame, and sealed up again multiple times per season. Labor costs account for 35% of revenues, and are prone to human error. When we consider 40% of hives are lost annually, we see beekeepers are under immense pressure to cut costs and find efficiencies.

Let’s say a beekeeper with 10,000 hives typically loses 4,000 (40%) per year. That’s a $2-million loss in profits! By investing half of that annual loss in a one-time purchase, each hive can be equipped with a BuzzBox, and the beekeeper can lower that annual loss by an estimated $1.75-million.
