It's also one of the most expensive – in 2025 AAA reported that car ownership costs the average American more than $12,000 per year. And the majority of those trips are under 10 miles, with a single passenger. At Environmental Transit Authority, Inc. (ETA), we built the ELF to close that gap. It's a three-wheel, solar-assisted, pedal-electric hybrid that fits bike lanes, requires no license or registration, and carries a passenger and a week's worth of groceries. It gets the equivalent of 1,800 MPGe and requires less than 400 pounds of CO2 to manufacture compared to roughly 40 tons for a conventional electric car.I'm Rob Cotter, Founder and CEO of Organic Transit. In 2012, I started the company in an abandoned furniture warehouse in Durham, North Carolina. Three months after building our first prototype, we ran a Kickstarter campaign that raised $225K in 30 days. We delivered all 51 vehicles within 8 months.Since then, we've built and delivered 850 ELFs to all 50 states and 15 countries. Our riders have logged over 10 million miles. We've had zero serious injuries, zero frame failures, and a warranty rate under 3%. Our first-generation frame came with a 10-year guarantee; after years of real-world use, we extended it to lifetime. Now we're developing the ELF 3.0, the next generation of a vehicle that already has a 750-person waitlist, built entirely through word of mouth. We're raising investment on Wefunder to bring it to production. If you believe transportation should be practical, affordable, and less wasteful, we'd be glad to have you join us.Rob Cotter and the ETA TeamThe ELF 3.0 delivers power without fossil fuels, giving you the freedom to ride your way, pedal, electric assist, or solar. Its rooftop solar panels extend your range beyond what a battery alone can provide. We’re fortunate to have a passionate customer base. 10 million miles of insights are fueling bold new design innovations as we ramp up production.ELF 3.0 combines major upgrades in technology, style, and manufacturing, while keeping everything riders already loved. Here is a snapshot of what we plan to achieve:Wherever our products are used, riders are healthier, communities are safer, and the planet is cleaner. We call this the pursuit of happiness. -Rob Cotter, FounderFully Loaded. Ready for Action. With a Targeted $7,500 base price and integrating features inspired directly by our community, the soul of the ELF stays the same, but the experience will be radically better.Better than a Bike. Better than a Car.Why drive 2 tons of steel for a loaf of bread? The ELF is lighter, cheaper, and cleaner than a car and safer, faster, and more comfortable than a bike. Park with the bikes, load it like a car, and you’ll be looking for excuses to run errands.Better than a bike: No sweat (unless you want it), no strain (unless you’re pushing yourself), no exposure. Carry your groceries, your kid, or even your dog. Stay active, breathe fresh air, and conquer hills without the burnout.Better than a car: No gas, no insurance, no parking headaches. Just clean, quiet, low-cost travel that moves with you—not against you.80% of ELFs ever sold replaced a second car. The average ELF owner logs over 2,500 miles a year – 100 times the average bike rider. That's not a hobby vehicle. That's a daily driver with a real market behind it.Our StoryFounded by Rob Cotter in 2012, Organic Transit created an entirely new vehicle category and the market noticed. The ELF has been covered by NPR, CNN, CBS, the BBC, the Wall Street Journal, and NBC. A single Tech Insider video generated over 1 million views, 28,000 shares, and 52,000 likes within 24 hours. The NC Department of Commerce recognized the ELF as one of nine significant North Carolina inventions, alongside the Wright Brothers' aircraft, the bar code, and the first public university. The vehicle has also earned a Green America People and Planet Award, an NC Tech Award, recognition in Entrepreneur magazine's 100 Brilliant Companies, and selection by Lufthansa as a top urban mobility vehicle.76% of ELF owners say they are very likely or extremely likely to recommend it to others. We're inviting investors to join us on this next chapter. The Original ELF Sold 850 Vehicles! The ELF was an early entrant to the market, and we stood out by delivering 850 real vehicles while most companies still remain in concept today. With hundreds of units on the road, we’ve gained invaluable real-world feedback from passionate users. This isn’t a prototype; it’s a proven product, ready for its next chapter.Who's TalkingThe ELF Comparative AdvantageSimply put, there's nothing like it.Confidence in Every Curve: The Inherent Safety of the ELFSafety is at the core of our design philosophy. Crafted with a lightweight aircraft aluminum frame, a Safety Cell body made from advanced polymers, recumbent seating, full integrated lighting, side view mirrors, triple disc brakes, and a high visibility design. The ELF enhances the visibility of a bicycle, providing the protective footprint of an enclosed vehicle.Designed for StabilityOur three-wheel “tadpole” configuration, featuring two wheels in front and one in back, combined with our patented steering technology, provides exceptional stability, especially for lightweight vehicles where balance is crucial. The rider sits forward within the chassis, which optimizes weight distribution. This improves handling and control, while the familiar upright steering position provides the intuitive feel most people are accustomed to from cars and bicycles. The result: confident cornering, predictable control, and a safer ride in all conditions.Freedom Through Inclusive MobilityThe ELF is designed with universal accessibility in mind, offering a liberating option for people with disabilities, especially those who can’t ride a bike or don’t have (or aren’t eligible for) a driver’s license. Its stable, three-wheeled frame and ability to travel on both streets and greenways provide a safe, independent way to get around. And with optional pedaling, riders can build strength and stay active on their own terms. It’s mobility, reimagined for everyone. We like to say that micromobility is not just for young men in skinny jeans riding scooters. Life comes with a lot of challenges like bad weather, grocery shopping, carting kids to school, book bags, lunch boxes, briefcases, baggage etc. that a scooter or bike may not comfortably handle.Life also comes with circumstances like pregnancy and osteoporosis. And some people get dealt a hand that comes with epilepsy, autism or other conditions that may rob them of their ability to travel independently by car. That's why we designed the ELF to carry 550 pounds of cargo so we can get more people, in all kinds of circumstances, away from auto dependency.— Maureen Costello, former Chief Administrative Officer, Organic TransitImpressive FootprintThe ELF is engineered for elegant minimalism, from its lightweight, recycled materials to its ultra-low energy demands. The ELF has a light footprint, which is beneficial for all of us.A quiet, solar-electric glide that demands less from the planet and gives more in return.Patented TechA key element in the ELF’s design is the patented steering mechanism. This critical innovation is unlike any other vehicle on the market. This innovation lowers the center of gravity, making it less likely to tip over while still maintaining the ELF's agility. This fits in with our “Safety Cell” strategy.AeroDynamic EfficiencyImagine the aerodynamic drag of a cyclist, now add a safety shell, weather protection, room for a passenger, and storage for your weekly haul. That’s what this delivers. We utilized advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to fine-tune the ELF’s aerodynamic body, minimizing drag and maximizing performance. With a sleek Coefficient of Drag (Cd) of just 0.32, the ELF slices through the air with the efficiency of a pro cyclist. At cruising speeds of around 20 mph, roughly 60% of your energy (whether pedal or electric) goes into overcoming air resistance, a figure that increases with speed. That’s why our streamlined design matters. The result? You get the aerodynamic benefits of a conventional bicycle, plus weather protection, a safety-enhancing frame, space for a passenger, and room for a week’s worth of groceries, all in one ultra-efficient vehicle.Conditions are Perfect for the ELFThe Market is ReadyMicromobility is projected to reach over $340 billion by 2030*. Sandy Munro has provided constructive feedback for many businesses, including Aptera and Tesla. I would be most curious about what potential feedback he could provide, to potentially expedite ELF 3.0 construction, marketing and continuous success. I also had a whimsical thought, what if you were inspired by the Aptera? Are there any characteristics of the Aptera that you find to be beneficial and could be incorporated into the ELF? https://www.google.com/search?q=what+is+the+dragcoefficient+of+the+Aptera%3F\u0026amp;sourceid=chrome\u0026amp;ie=UTF-8#cobssid=s Then I thought, maybe we could call it the ELFTera? I'm quite familiar with certain aspects of Aptera. Back in the early 80s I was the VP of Land for the International Human Powered Vehicle Association (IHPVA) and was deeply involved in the multitude of unique designs that were participating in numerous vehicle events. At the 1982 IHPV Speed Championships at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a four passenger trike appeared called \"Pegasus\". It was a great way to package four riders and had similar aerodynamic properties to Alberto Morelli's aero shape which was made into a concept vehicle in 1976 by Pininfarina called the CNR. Link to the IHPVA Pegasus/Fusion: http://recumbents.com/wisil/misc/londry/default.htm Pinnanfarina Aptera precursor from 1976: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8lWLS74gejA We are big fans of Sandy Munro and are in communication with him. Don Gerhardt, who is heading ELF battery development and designed the curriculum for technical training for ELF maintenance, worked with Sandy long ago at Ford Trucks and Club Car Golf Carts. I'm not familiar with the specifics of the Aptera solar panels but all previous ELFs used Marine grade flexible solar panels which became a structural component for the whole body, (think of how windshields are structural in modern cars). The new ELF 3.0 solar panels will have dampeners to limit damaging vibration, individually oriented by rows that are easily replaced in approximately 20W modules. Still structural, but less so to minimize cell damage and optimize orientation. Here is an interview I did last year on the Aptera Owners' Club: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fU8rjkOrO7g\u0026amp;t=349s Few things in the technical world excite me more than aerodynamics. My original velomobile \"Synchro\" was based on a NACA 66 shape and designed for road racing, maintained speeds over 50 mph with one human. In a 50 mile road race on the Ottawa-Hull Ceremonial Loop it went over 80 mph. My point here is, aerodynamics needs to be part of the whole package. Synchro could've been faster for all out speed runs but was optimized to handle the varied terrain of road racing. Although the ELF is far superior to a bicycle aerodynamically, comprises are made for: seat height, safety, size, ground clearance, pedaling, cargo, passengers, manufacturability, weather and primarily, practicality. Also the faster a vehicle goes the more aerodynamics plays an important part. I love your idea of some sort of an Aptera alliance. Frankly, there's only so many solar type vehicles out there (most of them being ELFs) and we should stick together. Watch this space for an an announcement soon of really exciting super aero efficiency coming out of ETA. Think of the old adage, \"Racing improves the breed\", from Soichiro Honda, founder of Honda Motor Company. That's all for now. Competition - There's significant competition in the electric bike marketplace with scooters and other options. How do you compete? 2. Market Timing - Do you think Environmental Transit may be a few years ahead of where the market need is going to be, making it potentially a longer-term play? 3. First off, in comparison to Ebikes the ELF is in a class of it's own. Even though there are well over 10MM Ebikes built per year, there are only a handful of \"Pod\" type bike companies out there. None have produced as many units or covered as many miles as the ELF (850 units delivered, over 10MM miles travelled). Here is one ELF competitive advantage: Safety is considered the biggest deterrent to full bicycle acceptance. The ELF is the safest bicycle ever brought to market. Over 10 million miles of a real world proven safety track record. Engineered with an integrated \"Safety Cell\" consisting of an advanced polymer shell, aircraft aluminum substructure combined to create a \"Tensegrity Structure\" where both body \u0026amp; frame are in compression and tension. This not only makes it extremely rugged but also \"Add's Lightness\". Three wheeled stability prevents it from falling over and the space between rider and the point of impact can be over 16\". The ELF's intelligent safety technology for occupant protection is currently unavailable to other bikes, scooters or motorcycles. 2. The global micromobility market is expected to reach $520 billion by 2035, according to a recent study by McKinsey. If the industry is to produce the hundreds of millions of units to reach that market penetration, the technology will need to address all the user deterrents. After safety the biggest deterrents are: weather, hills, ability to carry cargo and bring a friend. Except for hill climbing, these major issues are barely covered by the eBike industry. Minimobility (microcars) are popular in the EU and Asia and cover these issues but are much heavier, cannot be pedaled and are not legal in the US. The ELF is the only vehicle that covers all these issues but also has a track record of designing, building, selling and distributing on these consumer requirements. As the cost of car ownership continues to grow exponentially, (2025 Ford F-150 headlamp is $2K plus labor) consumers are looking not only for healthy and fun mobility but more economical ways to commute. 3. One differentiator is the integrated solar. What we found by integrating solar into every ELF built is that A) it increases daily distance travelled, and B) Increases the life of the battery by a lot. In southern climates some ELF owners travel 20-30 miles per day and never plug it in for years! Some ELF batteries properly maintained can last 10 years. Another key differentiator is miles used. ELF owners have travelled across the US multiple times and many travel between 6K to 12K miles per year. This is essentially a testimony of our customer surveys that shows over 70% of ELF owners use it to replace their 2nd car. 4. In the first generation of ELF production, we raised a small amount of seed capital and just started building. Surviving on revenue we delivered about 70 units in our first year of production. This was essentially a pilot program as we figured out supply chain, distribution, etc. and yet we achieved 43% margins. This is pretty exceptional just coming out of gates, particularly for vehicles made in the US. But the critical issue was: we couldn't build as many as we could sell. In the ELF 3.0 we'll be taking the knowledge base we acquired from the first generation ELFs: Voice of the Customer, supply chain, ultra-lean manufacturing and combining it with new innovations and designs. That means production based on thousands of units. Previously ELF buyers placed an order, paid 100% upfront and waited weeks or months to get their ELF. Our intention is to have units ready for delivery, offer customer financing and increase the margins. Teaming up with the Wefunder community, we see the production ready prototypes completed this year, creating the foundation for scaled production and achieving revenue in 2026. I saw you had some at Duke University(one of my alma maters) I saw where a student mentioned that it doesn't work for somebody tall, I saw he had to crouch into it. is there anyway to fix that? 2. I can see this being at every college or university, security companies at malls, event centers etc. cheaper etc than the option they have now, easy sale. many times suv's. with that being said I think it would be great if you had an ambassador program etc. a company I invested in got acquired a month ago for over 700 million, i think we could have gotten way more if we waited a year. a huge reason we made a lot in revenue is when we started an ambassador program. we had people all over the place. 3. excuse me if you already explained this but what would you say makes you different than pebl and veemo? a YouTube video I watched guy was testing you guys and those 2. he was saying basically the same thing for all 3. he said yours go up to 30 miles per hour while pebl goes up to 40 if you pedal fast, which I would guess is same for you guys? you guys had basically same price point too. you got something special here!","author_name":"John Webster","votes":2,"created_at":"2026-01-14T17:01:25Z","canonical_url":"https://wefunder.com/organic.transit#question-323007","answers":[{"id":323052,"entity_id":"wefunder:comment:323052","answer":"Hi John: I'm not sure which video implied you can't be tall in an ELF but they're very wrong. We had a 6'9\" basketball player comfortably riding around. We're about to institute an Ambassador Program. There are so many categories to address: commuters, athletes, health, disabilities, touring, environment, recreational parks, shared use, etc. Each one of these will get a specific \"Tool Kit\" of info to share with their network. The power of crowdfunding happens when the community of investors participate in the growth of their investments. Truly amazing. In comparison to the other vehicles you mentioned: 1. All ELFs are solar powered, not an option or after thought 2. ELFs carry 2 people 3. Delivered 850 US made ELFs and have traveled over 10 million miles. No other Pod vehicle comes close. 4. Although ELFs are very practical, they're also aerodynamically superior. 5. ELFs have integrated safety features not available in other models 6. ELFs are significantly lighter than any vehicle with similar capabilities I think we need a variety of vehicles to address people's needs and everyone has their unique preferences and budget. That said, there are a number of inaccuracies in the reports you mentioned. An educated investor is our greatest ally. (The most popular occupations for ELF owners are architects and physicians). I talked about aerodynamics in an earlier response and ELFs have been tested for side winds. Although we were pretty happy with the results we are talking about a vehicle that weighs under 200 lbs. Whether winds, flooding, snow \u0026amp; ice, common sense must dictate when and where to ride the ELF. That said, ELFs are surprisingly good in snow \u0026amp; ice. Here is a short video of two ELFs climbing a snow \u0026amp; ice covered hill. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ha_sEsPQI-g Cost is a relative thing. But that mostly applies to corrosion and modest vibration and abrasion. (Land vehicles can be much harder on hardware than boats) Our ELF 3.0 solar panels will be formatted for the vehicle. ELF full suspension will play a big part in limiting vibration. The data we've uncovered over 850 vehicles traveling 10+ million miles has created a platform for ELF 3.0 (and related vehicles) that will substantially increase overall efficiency and reliability. First on the batteries: Many of the batteries ELFs have been using since 2013 have been LiFePO4. Yes, the same battery chemistry Tesla adopted in 2021 and other major brands in 2023. We knew then what we all know now, that this chemistry is safer and very resilient. Which plays a large part in why ELFs never had a battery fire. All ELF batteries will be fully compliant with all safety certifications. Although there are numerous interesting battery chemistries on the horizon, until one is commercially available that is safe, longer lasting and more economical, we are still very much in favor of the LiFePO4. Drivetrains: ELFs have never used hub motors in the wheel. We did use hub motors in a mid-drive configuration, what we called an \"UpDrive\". Modern hub motors are rugged and well engineered but when used in a rear wheel configuration there are tradeoffs we weren't willing to make. Hub motors increase the weight of the wheel which increases rolling inertia and unsprung mass, two characteristics to avoid when designing for efficiency. This slows acceleration, diminishes hill climbing ability and decreases overall handling quality. Another important consideration for ELFs (and most vehicles) is the \"center of gravity\", which is negatively effected by a heavier rear wheel. This can have adverse effects on stability. The ELF is the opposite of this, not only moving the mass of weight forward but getting the center of gravity as low as possible. This is part of the design criteria that is considered throughout the ELF as to how each part interacts with each other as well as other aspects like environmental impact and manufacturability. I look forward to sharing more ELF design insights as the campaign evolves.
