Panthers Rising - Building A Professional Football Team for Oakland

Oakland Arena Press Conference Announcing the Oakland Panthers - September 2019

The Oakland Panthers are a professional indoor football team based in Oakland, California. A member of the Indoor Football League, the Oakland Panthers were set to kick off their inaugural season at Oakland Arena on March 14th, 2020. The Oakland Panthers are co-owned by Oakland native and former NFL All-Pro running back Marshawn Lynch and by entertainment entrepreneur Roy Choi, who also owns the IFL's Cedar Rapids River Kings and San Diego Strike Force. The vision of the team is to provide Oakland with exciting, family-friendly, affordable professional football.

Inaugural Season - Canceled due to the Covid-19 Pandemic

“While we are intensely saddened that we will not play our Inaugural Season this year, we recognize this is a moment bigger than football. We pray for the health of our entire Bay Area community,” said Co-Founder Roy Choi. “We look forward to building the future of Oakland football when we kick off our Inaugural Season in 2021. In the meantime, we will continue our commitment to give back."

After six months of dedicated work building a strong team of players, coaches, and front office staff - a highly anticipated inaugural season was set to kick-off March 14, 2020. Seats were filled with passionate Panther fans, signage installed around the arena for the many local and national businesses committed to founding sponsorships, TV and radio partners were wired and ready to broadcast games to fans locally and nationally, and a team of 25 athletes wearing black, white, and gold were ready to step onto the black field and make history in Oakland...then the whistle blew on sports around the world due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Oakland Panthers were ready to “HIT DIFFERENT” in 2020.  Sponsors, valued partners, fans, and a community all excited to welcome their new professional team. With great disappointment, the IFL 2020 season was canceled on April 13, 2020, and the Oakland Panthers inaugural season was delayed to 2021. The silver lining for the Oakland Panthers is they are more than ready to play and the enthusiasm, support, and determination of this team and the Oakland community will position the team stronger for success in their inaugural season in 2021.
