So we're gonna see our supply starting to really drive demand. Win-win. 2) If we look at the set of users who subscribed from when we launched in Oct 2020 until the end of 2021, users were subscribed for an average of 6 months and booked on average 22 sessions - so it's a bit higher than what the pricing/ ARPU suggests. That said, we're always driving for higher retention and there's a few levers we found really worked: - We introduced yearly plans with an added value proposition: instead of get monthly quote of credits, get your full year's worth of sessions and use them variably all year round. Quite quickly we went from 0% to 30% of users on annual plans. It created a better experience for them, and higher retention \u0026amp; cashflow for us. - We introduced tonnes of new instruments \u0026amp; services. In the first couple of months it's hard to imagine that we only had 5 instruments. Users would subscribe wanting violin or vocals and they couldn't find it, so they left! Now we have 150+ instruments and 9 different types of services from lead sheet creation to mix advice and mastering. Every time we've added key services, we found that users booked more and stayed longer. They told us they want to use Musiversal for everything and stop using services like SoundBetter (expensive) or Fiverr (hit and miss); now they can. And there'll be more to come. - Acquiring the \"best-fit\" users for our annual subscription plans. These are pro users with a consistent need and multiple projects per-year. We did cohort analysis on our users and found that these guys pay more and stay longer. - Bit by bit, providing so much variety and value that no music creator has to go anywhere else. 3) This is effective CAC and includes all marketing costs. Since we’re the first company bringing the offline studio experience into the online world, we’re setting the standard. So it’s really important that we get this one right. We believe it comes down to nailing these 7 factors, which I’ll explain in more detail below: 1. Quality of our service providers \u0026amp; their studios 2. Ongoing quality of those service providers (the processes \u0026amp; procedures we put in place) 3. Qualitative feedback: Having open channels of communication 4. Quality of technologies used 5. Having a support team 6. Quality on the client side: Session materials 7. Quantitative feedback: measuring quality Firstly, it might be useful to explain how the sessions work. Before the session, the client (a music creator, e.g. songwriter or composer) will send session materials to the service provider (session musician, producer or audio engineer). The service provider will review the materials, practise them and set up the session (i.e. the DAW, putting in markers, etc). Then it’s time for the recording session itself, where the client joins over livestream and because of the prep, the service provider is already ready to hit record! There might be a few minutes of pleasantries and idea-sharing, before the service provider gets to it and starts recording the first take. There’s usually plenty of time to do a few full takes and whatever redoes and overdubs the client requests. Finally, the musician does the export and delivers all of the files to the client. So, as you can tell, guaranteeing studio quality mostly depends on the quality of the service provider and their recording setup, since they are the ones actually doing the recording locally and delivering the files. If they are incredible musicians and have a professional recording studio, then it’s very likely both the experience (the session) and the result (the music files) will be of studio quality. That’s why this one is first on the list of things we need to nail… 1. Quality of our service providers \u0026amp; their studios So how do we ensure our service providers and their studios are of studio/ professional quality? Well, unlike competitors which have almost zero barrier to entry and thousands of providers with variable quality, we are a managed marketplace. That means we actually hire our service providers - they work for the company, and so this is something we have full control over! Every service provider goes through a rigorous application process, including screening, knock-out questions, mock sessions and interviews. Here’s a shortened list of requirements: - Be a professional session artist. I.e. be a great sight reader (scores/sheet music/lead sheets/chords charts), a great improviser, play multiple genres idiomatically, be able to easily adapt to clients requests on the fly, and love to collaborate and reach the best possible outcome for clients. - Have a professional recording studio (either their own home studio or access to one) which is acoustically treated - Have industry standard recording equipment (preamps/amps/audio interface/microphones) - Have a high speed internet connection (30mb of actual download and upload speed; mandatory use of Ethernet cable) - Be proficient in a professional DAW (Logic or Pro Tools are preferred but it can also be Cubase, Reaper, Studio One or Ableton Live) - Be a great communicator and be able to speak English fluently - Very responsible, dedicated, a great listener and overall professional and great to work with Ultimately, we accept less than 1% of those who apply, and we have a roster of artists who are amongst the best of the best. This goes a really long way to ensuring studio quality! But we don’t stop there. 2. Ongoing quality of those service providers Musiversal isn’t just moving the offline studio experience to online. We’re also making recording at least 3x more efficient. What you might be able to achieve in a standard 3 hour studio session offline, we’re aiming to achieve that in 30 mins to 1 hour online. To achieve this requires a transformed system and it requires service providers to operate on a whole new level. For example, one service provider might spend 5x 1 hour sessions back to back, each with a different client and piece of music, every day. Even for the most talented musicians this requires ongoing training and development to ensure the highest quality consistently. So that’s something else we do. First, when a new service provider joins Musiversal, they go through onboarding, mock sessions and general training and preparation for sessions. Then ongoingly, we have extensive guides which our providers follow; helping standardize processes like preparing the DAW, how to manage different technologies, communicating with clients and even naming conventions to name exported files \u0026amp; folders. For ongoing performance checks we record and store every single session to the cloud; and occasionally ‘spot-check’ quality by jumping into sessions in the moment. We have a dedicated team member responsible for managing our service providers. 3. Qualitative feedback: Having open channels of communication What’s unique about Musiversal is that our service providers are a part of the company! That means they’re active on our company coms channels like Slack, WhatsApp and Zoom, and we speak every single day. As the professionals they are, they want to deliver the best possible service in the world. And since they’re on the “front line”, they’re extremely aware of what’s working really well and what can be improved. So we can be sure that any bit of feedback, however small, they tell us! And we act on everything. (Back when we were just starting out, we may have had 30+ pieces of feedback from our providers daily. Now we’re lucky if we have more than 1 - we’ve improved a lot!). It’s the same for our clients, too. We have a Facebook group where our clients hangout, chat, discuss the service, share their experiences and give feedback. They’re also open to doing that by email, and some even make extensive videos on YouTube about where Musiversal really nails it, and where it’s falling short. (I recommend checking these out!). We also run customer interviews quite often, interviewing at least 20 customers every quarter, ensuring we get to the very bottom of their unbiased experiences. So, we keep open channels everywhere. And we listen closely. We take everything on board, and always act in the direction of quality; creating the best possible experience for our users. 4. Quality of technologies used Since the recording and file delivery is carried out by the service provider, it’s not of paramount importance that the streaming quality is flawless to ensure studio quality. However, it is still important for the client to be able to hear their music being recorded and to be able to communicate/ collaborate/ direct the recording in real time. Therefore, we ensure that we’re using the best-in-market audio and video streaming solutions. We prioritise the audio quality, and for that we believe the best on the market is AudioMovers (acquired by Abbey Road Studios). And for the video streaming, we use Zoom. The audio quality on Zoom is not the best, which is why we use Audio Movers for that. All of our partners have licenses and are trained in using both softwares - meaning there’s standardised quality platform-wide. Again, this is something that no other music marketplace is able to provide. Of course, sometimes things can go wrong with 3rd party providers. We regularly update our training guides so they’re up o date with new versions and to ensure our service providers are well-equipped to deal with any issues. And we offer guidance to users who may be using these tools for the first time. It’s our intention to develop our own proprietary streaming software for the specific purpose of live stream recordings, but will only launch this when it’s of higher quality than current market solutions. 5. Having a supporting team Guaranteeing studio quality doesn’t just mean nailing it in the session. It also means setting clients up for success from the moment they sign up; so they know what to expect, how to prepare and get the most out of the service. We have a team specifically designed for that called Customer Success. And we have a team ready to support to ensure every session runs smoothly and efficiently; after all, ensuring a smooth, efficient and professional service is part of guaranteeing studio quality. 6. Quality on the client side: Session materials The client is also partly responsible for ensuring studio quality. In order for a session musician to perform and record, they need to have some essential session material! This includes audio material, so the musician has something to play along to. And also written material, so they can follow the structure of the piece (whether it’s a chords/ lead sheet or a score). In fact, the better the materials, the better the experience and the result. To help clients with that, we provide guides and advice on what session materials are required, and how to create them. In addition, we also have services to do that for clients on the roster. With our pre-production service, clients can send even the most basic idea (say over voice recording) and our producers will create professional audio and written material for our session musicians to use. Again, we do what we can in the aspects that we can control. However the client is also responsible for doing their part here. 7. Quantitative feedback: measuring quality Finally, there needs to be a way to measure quality. Otherwise, you’ll never know whether you’re truly delivering it! We ask clients to rate \u0026amp; review every single session; both on the quality of the experience and on the quality of the files they receive.
