As a manufacturer, MadeSolid is shaping the capabilities of 3D printers. Why it's a big deal: The market for 3D printers is growing rapidly: hobbyists get the hype, but industry growth lies in the manufacturing. If MadeSolid continues to invent and protect IP around new materials - along with the print heads and software that control them - they have a chance to create an industry standard where every 3D printer is labeled \"MadeSolid compatible\". This isn't just a company supplying the \"ink\" for 3D printers. This company is continuously inventing the inks of the 3D printer world, each bearing the \"MadeSolid\" stamp of approval.","story":"We've been called the \"Mad Scientists of 3D Printing\". We received additional funding for expanding the technology to print ceramic materials as well. We can execute quickly on bringing metal materials to market for the SLS machines, after a larger round this is something I want to pursue. As for food, we could enter the market anytime we want, for us the chemistry is our playground and food is another kind of material. If we did anything in this space we would most definitely need to build a printer too. HP and Microsoft. I have high hopes they can do some good here for the industry, I have not been impressed with the software formats I've seen to date. Lots of room for real innovation here. For me, the big software challenge are design tools that allow programmatic placement of materials. One of the cool areas of development is multi material 3D printing, it's going to be awesome but there is no software that really gets it yet. Most of the effort of the large firms is on dealing with the influx of smaller, nimbler competitors who are making machines. Indeed much of the focus has been on machines and how to protect their ‘ink’ as it currently stands rather than innovate in the materials space. I was told point blank that the reason we have not been acquired yet is because we don’t have our own machine. Although this may seem foolish that we have not pursued a machine to complement our materials, at least in the short term, we have a significant advantage by staying laser focused on the hardest problems in the industry: materials. In terms of competitive landscape, deeper pockets are good for acquisitions but ramping up a productive R\u0026amp;D effort takes years and much of the industry has been criticized for doing essentially zero R\u0026amp;D over the last decade. Beyond capital, creating a culture that fosters innovation to push the boundaries of what’s possible is an intangible that is impossible to create from the top down, and I suspect that this will be a continual struggle for established firms. Our competitors as they exist are largely either commodity material suppliers, reselling Chinese goods to the Maker market or established resin producers that cater to larger markets such as Automotive coatings and such. We want to own the materials market and that means securing IP on our innovations, strategic relationships, and maintaining and growing a brand around all the products we create. In my opinion, focusing on making existing materials work in 3D Printers is not a defensible business and that’s why we focus on defensible materials to open new markets as 3D Printing grows.","author_name":"Lance Pickens","votes":0,"created_at":"2014-12-10T20:45:46Z"}]},{"id":1918,"entity_id":"wefunder:comment:1918","question":"Hi Lance.
