Kidcaboo was founded by a mom who left a career she loved when she couldn't find someone to drive her children to school and activities. Her intention is to help level the career playing field for other working moms.
PROBLEMFor working parents, the impact of this problem has had devastating implications, including divorce, early or forced retirement, stress in the household and at work, an impact upon job performance and growth opportunities, lost wages and more. The effects are especially devastating for working moms, and this problem has only been exacerbated by COVID. In fact, a stunning 43% of highly qualified women with children leave their careers or take a career break due to daily childcare responsibilities. Over time, this contributes significantly to gender inequality, pay gaps, missed promotions, and long-term financial impact. The impact of the day-to-day childcare transport responsibilities that fall on, largely speaking, women, are now understood to have set working moms back decades. Not all families can afford nannies, and school-provided transportation options, if available, lack flexibility. Other children's transportation options have opted to operate B2B in most areas and are largely tied to school-district based geographies and schedules, making them unavailable options to most interested working parents nationwide. With a lack of choice, some parents today are even forced to depend on Uber or Lyft to transport their children from schools and extracurricular activities, even though these traditional ride-sharing companies not only have policies against minors traveling alone, in most cases*, but also are simply Just Not Safe.**In 2017, Uber piloted a program to allow some teens in a limited number of selected areas to schedule Uber rides. The pilot program was quickly shuttered due to safety issues. Please see article below. They have recently attempted to try this again, citing the enormous demand for rides amongst teens and youth as a rationale for attempting to retry the program. Uber has not and does not plan to change their safety and driver-vetting process, and several other factors, we consider critical for such a program. Whether this effort is successful or not, we do not expect Kidcaboo's clientele to be affected. It appears that in the areas Uber is offering this program to select teens ages 13-17, parents will allow only teens who are generally larger, mostly male and strong, and appear older, to use Uber. This was the case even before the official program launched. ARTICLE: https://www.vox.com/the-goods/2019/9/9/20853328/underage-teens-uber-lyftWith few, if any, options, though, most working parents are left to transport their children to and from school and activities themselves, while also working. A personal experience with this problem is at the heart of Kidcaboo.THE KIDCABOO SOLUTIONAfter years of fine-tuning and testing our operations, Kidcaboo officially launched in Texas in mid-2022, seeing incredible growth over our first year in the state.Designed by a mom for other working parents, Kidcaboo became an instant hit!Adoption of our well-designed mobility solution for school-age kids that allows parents to be present at and focus on work, during work hours, has taken off. Overwhelming, word-of-mouth-driven demand has quickly gone nationwide, all with no marketing dollars spent.Since mid-2022, we've expanded across eight states, with many more in the works! In 2019, after taking three years away from work to have and be at home with her two children, Rebecca Lock was ready to return to her fifteen-year, well-paying career as a reality and documentary TV producer. With her children both now headed to school, the timing seemed perfect. Despite an exhaustive search and well-paying offer, Rebecca had to turn down the job, since she couldn’t find someone to drive her children the short distance to and from school and their other after-school activities. She knew in her heart that, in doing so, she was also losing a likely last chance to return to the "young person's" career, in which job opportunities were rare. It was a career she loved and counted on for her family's financial future. Devastated and scared, Rebecca became determined to ensure no other moms go through what she did. After initial research within her community and then nationwide, Rebecca realized the pressure on families to drive children around was deep-rooted and without any solution. Working parents cannot be in two places at once. So, in almost all cases, a sacrifice was required, either a parent's job was compromised or lost, or a child had to drop a beloved enrichment activity. The demand for a solution was enormous, and the market -- almost fully unmet. To understand the needs and gaps in mobility solutions for children, Rebecca jumped in at the deep end. She drove young children from 6 AM until late at night, often with her kids in tow. She interacted with families to get a picture of what parents expect from kids’ car services. Most importantly, she realized a vast and untapped opportunity, with huge national demand and need, was staring right back at her. Within a few months, Rebecca had completed 800 rides, driven 10,000+ miles, and worked with 80+ families! With a strong grasp of the problem, it was now time for a SOLUTION.Bringing in key partners along the way, an idea moved to reality over four years of full-time, daily work and wide-scale beta periods. The result? Kidcaboo.Kidcaboo is a rideshare for children, which utilizes cutting edge technology, a stringent ride monitoring system, heavily vetted and trained driving nannies, proprietary user communication channels, and other well-honed policies and procedures, developed over years, to guarantee peace of mind or parents and the utmost safety of our drivers and passengers. At the heart of our operations are two self-developed Kidcaboo apps - one for drivers, one for parents - and an extensive back office, which offers Kidcaboo the ability to monitor rides, track our drivers to ensure timeliness and much more. Our drivers are fully background checked, heavily vetted, pass an interview with Kidcaboo's Driving Nanny Hiring Team, must have childcare experience and are trained by and remain in regular contact with Kidcaboo's Driving Nanny Operations Team. We're so proud to have completed thousands of rides safely across many states! And we’re thrilled to have seen the incredible impact our solution has had for parents, especially working moms.Kidcaboo and our Driving Nannies quickly proved to be a tried, trusted, proven, flexible, safe and reliable solution. As a result, repeat users, over years of beta and now active operations, scheduled regular rides, often for a whole year. Almost all returned year-after-year.LOOKING FORWARDEntry barriers to the children's transportation space are increasingly sky high. Kidcaboo has obtained exhaustive, difficult to secure insurance policies, which are a key competitive advantage and key entry barrier to competition. Our indirect competitors include traditional rideshares designed for adults, school transportation companies, and B2B children rideshare options. Unlike school-connected, indirect competitors in the children's transportation space, Kidcaboo's unique B2C operations scales rapidly within and across states. We anticipate being in around ten states or more by the end of 2023 and plan to grow nationwide from there. Given the enormity of our market, which is largely unmet, Kidcaboo could thrive even with competition in any one area, due to enormous and growing demand. With an enormous, almost fully unmet market, we anticipate adoption and growth to continue exponentially over the next several years and are excited to explore all options regarding Kidcaboo's future as they increasingly are presented. We have raised ~$2.3M, including $379K from Wefunder investors prior to our full launch, and from other unrelated investors. Most of this early private investment comes from industry insiders, such as Harry Campbell, the Rideshare Guy, one of the foremost, relied-upon experts in the rideshare industry, prominent investment groups, like She's Independent, and professional investors working at VC funds, who come with incredible connections to support future raises. We also have a game-changing partnership with Tusk Holdings’ Pericles Group, the group that was pivotal in supporting and growing early Uber and other new model companies, such as Lemonade and FanDuel. Interested in getting into the childcare and children's transportation space, this industry-insider group opted to work with Kidcaboo over others in the space when having that choice. We appreciate your time and consideration of this mission and opportunity and hope you'll join us on this journey to change the lives of families today. Thank you. Our Greatest Appreciation, THE KIDCABOO TEAM
["https://wefunder.com/kidcaboo","https://www.kidcaboo.com
https://uploads.wefunder.com/uploads/company/header_media_photo/111459/xxl_cropped_Rebecca_Lock_Kidcaboo__29_of_47_.jpg
https://uploads.wefunder.com/uploads/company/logo/111459/large_cropped_Screen_Shot_2022-03-01_at_12.19.52_PM.png
https://uploads.wefunder.com/uploads/company/header_media_photo/111459/standard_cropped_Rebecca_Lock_Kidcaboo__29_of_47_.jpg
https://uploads.wefunder.com/uploads/company/header_media_photo/111459/standard_cropped_Rebecca_Lock_Kidcaboo__29_of_47_.jpg
https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&fbclid=IwAR2mneRlDbdcsjD7IAHATyOUg6rbdp7MoCjIWeVigw7-xk2nDcBtD6DTduY_aem_AU2VgV0zOOyrENie4ihjtjXpmsX8amcAx_PjFYPpmmDYl6u6Akwr9kzr9M4HUj5i30k&v=3PRRk2KoT2U&t=1214&mibextid=Zxz2cZ#bottom-sheet
https://uploads.wefunder.com/uploads/company_role/custom_photo/2553076/square_cropped_Screen_Shot_2022-03-01_at_12.43.36_PM.jpg?1713795077
["https://wefunder.com/rebeccalock1
I've been covering the rideshare industry for almost 10 years and the 'Uber for kids' niche has always been a huge opportunity in my mind. My question however relates to supply. Not in terms of vetting/vetted drivers, not even in terms of the overall number of drivers that you can scale, but relative to the time period that they are needed, whether you will find enough to achieve your rough revenue projections. What I mean by that is that you could for any particular locale, find say for instance 100 drivers. Unlike Uber, etc though, those drivers aren't needed throughout the day, mainly only during 2 peak periods. 1 driver can only make an average 1.5 (prob at most 2 on avg) rides during the morning peak period, so that means that you can only service, in this example, 150-200 rides. I don't doubt there could be massive demand for your service from parents (certainly more than 200 worth), but addressing the needed number of drivers during rush hours may be the bottleneck. I'm not sure there that many "Christmas workers" available at that time. I appreciate it greatly. This is a wonderful question. When we fully launched in TX early this year, after multiple years in beta and development, this was a big concern for us. This was the period when everyone in America seemed to be affected by the hiring crisis. We - me, our advisors, investors and team - anticipated the same. Hiring and retaining drivers had not been a problem in testing due to our strong driver payment, specific benefits and opportunities we offer and some other, more operations-specific, features. These things ensure driver retention and minimize the need for huge incentives. We worried they may not compensate for the hiring crisis at the time of our full TX launch though. Given that, before letting anything slip out publicly about our TX launch, we spent about a month solely building a Driving Nanny team in several metros around TX. As we learned, because of the benefits listed above, hiring drivers proved not to be a problem for us. We believed it would be a big hurdle, but we were wrong. We have about 100 drivers in TX and see that number growing to a few hundred in the coming months and expanding from there. Subsequently, we launched in four other states and are having an identical experience in those areas. I hope this sufficiently answers your wonderful question. Thanks for the great question. HSD and almost all similar companies are B2B (they almost exclusively focus on building their business with schools) and struggled with B2C scaling, which is where we’ve succeeded well. They are an incredible company and have an incredible market, as do we. Their relationship with schools makes scaling easier to some extent - they go into an area with localized demand, for example. It has and will continue to preclude many of those companies from TNC licensing in certain states, which is something we’re heavily focused on attaining currently exclusively through our partnership with Tusk Holdings. We should be licensed in many of those states, we believe strongly, within the coming months. Geographically, we will likely be in significantly more markets by the end of this year for multiple well-researched and accepted scalability reasons, which ties back to our focus on different markets. It's wonderful to hear from you and I appreciate your thoughtful questions. See responses below: 1) For an answer to your first question, please see slide 9 of the pitch deck on our company's Wefunder page, www.wefunder.com/kidcaboo. Also, our indirect competition includes traditional rideshares designed for adults, school supplemental transportation companies and rideshares, school busses, school vans and children's transportation van companies, full-time nannies (a rarity and less-than-optimal option for ever the wealthiest of families) and similar transportation options. All serve, mostly, a very different market than Kidcaboo. The market's demand is enormous and multiple modes of transportation are needed to serve all children in the US. Kidcaboo, however, serves a very distinct, large and almost fully unmet market. Kidcaboo parents use us when their personal schedule and their child's schedule and transportation needs do not easily coexist. For example, if a parent has to arrive at work late or leave early in order to drop off or pick up a child at school, or to get a child to an activity, Kidcaboo eliminates the need for someone's schedule to suffer or be sacrificed. By handling the child's transportation, we allow a parent to fulfill their work responsibilities and schedule fully, while the child is also able to fully maintain a schedule. Kidcaboo is valued for allowing all family members to be where needed, when needed, on time and without stress or sacrifice. WFH has increased demand from parents, due to an increase in planned and coordinated (rather than impromptu, in-person) meetings. A return to work, however, something many in our market are facing, is not expected to reduce our demand or the need from our market. 2) We have spent three years and built an incredible, highly specialized legal and insurance team to assess, reduce, identify, address and protect all parties from risk on all fronts. We have innumerable required and non-required insurance policies, operate in compliance with all relevant government statutes and with a license from each state in which we're operational, and extensive safety and security-enhancing technology, policies and procedures in place. 3) Kidcaboo's Driving Nannies receive a percentage of each ride's pay that is significantly higher than other traditional TNCs. Our minimum per-rider driver payment is $15, for brief rides, which is vastly higher than the minimum payment received by drivers on the platforms you reference. 4) Revenue, in most states, comes exclusively from rides. In a few states, additional services bring in revenue, as well. Our revenue for this year should be in the six-figure range, and we anticipate it will be in the seven-figure range or above the following year or two. Our valuation is based on previous funding rounds and valuations, the status of our operations, team, tech and projected potential, projection models using numbers well-tested and derived from expansive beta periods, indirect competitor numbers as applicable and more. Please let me know if you have further questions about this and I'm happy to discuss. 5) Most of our seemingly insurmountable hurdles occurred in year one. Now, the biggest challenges we're addressing are 1) clearing the Northeast US states to begin operations and 2) as a company with proven, hockey-stick-shaped growth as we enter new markets, figuring out the fastest way to establish the bottom of the hockey stick in each new area. The bottom of this hockey has proven to be only about 30-50 loyal, regular clients, who then incite excitement about Kidcaboo, via organic word-of-mouth, setting off a rapid growth in demand from other parents. Once someone has tried our service, 87% schedule weekly rides and 96% of all clients return year-over-year. A current hurdle we're working through with Tusk Holdings' Pericles Program, who helped companies like Uber clear regulatory hurdles to states licensure, is securing our TNC license to operate as the first and only children's rideshare in the heavily regulated northeast states of NJ, CT, PA and MA. In NJ, where Kidcaboo was founded and tested, our waitlist is near ~1,000 parents. We are applying for a license in DC, MD and VA. Thank you so much for these very important, discerning questions. I appreciate the opportunity to address them here and, if the opportunity is right for you, we'd love to have you join us as we build and plan for the future of this venture! Thank you so much for these questions and I apologize for only seeing this. a) Currently, we're operating leanly at around 50K monthly burn, optimal growth burn is around 150K-180K for the national expansion path, which we'll return to this fall. We are really cost-efficient for a nationally-expanding, tech company with the capacities we have. Happy to get more into this at any time if you want to reach out and chat. b) We've ran from ~400K - ~50K on hand at any time over the past year, during which we operated leanly due to the economy and a purposeful choice to continue growing at a lower percentage that usual to get through it, while avoiding over dilution for investors. Prior to this and in our planning for the future, we like to keep at least 6 months of burn in the bank at this early stage. The upcoming round will accommodate 2 years of burn at least to get us to break even. Also happy to discuss further. c) This SAFE round appears to be closing tonight unless we are able to extend it. We're in touch with Wefunder about that. We will be closing this discounted SAFE round before an impending priced round at an expected higher valuation. That round has been in planning stages for a bit, but we were waiting out the economic situation, and only just began its implementation. Thank you for being in touch! Great question. I respect Uber and Lyft and their founders and CEOs a great deal. Our biggest differentiator from the few players in adjacent spaces, who are insured and licensed, is actually in fundamental operational procedures day one, not easily added-on (or money-dependent) features. Since this is a reasonable question for investors to ask, I've assessed it at length over years. I definitely did not have the answer early on. I have come to be very confident in this reply now though. One, I'm confident that no amount of money can create this system. Secondly, and more fundamentally, their mission is very different - which is key to all they are contributing and the speed at which they're moving to do so globally. It also precludes them from safely transporting youth on a large scale. They failed with the first iteration of Uber Teen. They are trying again because of the percentage of requests coming from this age group. The demand is truly overwhelming. We look forward to growing and forming partnerships and acquisitions to meet the need for this type of transportation safely and fully. Again, thanks for your great question. We've practiced and proven scalability (with drivers) across regions and states. Due to our honed ability to replicate our model in new areas, scaling has not proven to be a problem, nor do we anticipate that it will be. We currently are carefully and thoroughly modeled out to 1000 active drivers per city per day, but that is easily increasable. We operate for about 14 hours per day in a time zone, but most heavily during the before and after-school hours and this number is sufficient for our needs and to reach 1B in annual revenue. What I like about your question, though, is that you don't seem to be doubting the ability to scale drivers, but to scale the right kind of drivers. When I had this idea in 2019, I questioned this. too. Qualified driver availability is something we tested and practiced over three years. I learned, there is no limit to that number in any area, or if there is, the number far exceeds the number of drivers we need to reach the aforementioned annual revenue milestone. However, when we launched in TX in early 2022, I was concerned. As you may remember, at this time, America's focus was facing "The Great Resignation." McDonalds was offering college tuition for anyone willing to work for them, and any company couldn't offer enough money, it seemed, to gain employees. As a marketplace, our drivers are the hard side of our triangle. We needed to be able to secure them. But for our model to work, we also need to be able to retain them, while still working towards profitability. Given the timely concern, we went into TX with the opposite approach we normally employ - we went in aiming to get drivers first, while keeping marketing efforts quiet and from parents (due to demand) as long as possible. We figured we'd be unable to find drivers to meet parent demand. Historically, drivers were loyal to the core to us. I couldn't imagine how we'd scale, in the way we'd perfected, if that was lost or driver hiring became a hurdle. As it turns out, drivers are not, neither earlier this year or now, a hurdle for us. If they ever would be, it would have been at this time, I believe, but I was wrong. Given that, we've resumed our regular scaling procedures - opening up to parents first and then drivers - and are now entering both AZ and NC with that approach. We also have a ton of safety features, including an amazing ride monitoring team, watching rides live via in-car cameras, in addition to live GPS tracking, as extra safety precautions, in case anything very unexpected and unprecedented should ever happen. I hope you are well. We have raised ~2.5M. The first 250K was raised (pre-launch) in an initial priced round for 10% of the company, which was then valued at 2.5M. We then raised a bit over a million under a 5M SAFE (most pre-launch) and a bit over a million under a 10M SAFE. We currently have a 12M SAFE open. All SAFEs are standard Y-Combinator terms. We are expected to raise our next 3.6M at an approx. 20M pre-money val. Different figures ranging from 14.4M-26M pre-money have come up, but a concrete scenario suggests we'll fall around the 20M figure. The 3.6M amount is for two years needed to hit break-even. It is modeled conservatively. We'll then move to profitability. Please feel free to reach out with follow-up questions, but I very much appreciate this important inquiry. Thank you and stay well. We were able to move quickly due to the vigorous scaling practice for years. We launched in late March in AZ, in April in NC, and this summer in CT and PA. I'm grateful and will share it with our team. We'd love to have you. 1) Kidcaboo pays drivers usually around 60%, with about half of the rest going towards insurance and safety measures and monitoring and the rest being profit. 2) Having studied this extensively and actively worked to avoid the same problem, I believe strongly the solution to this problem is paying the driver well to have to avoid overwhelming driver incentives. When I looked into this problem and did 800 drives to understand why it existed, the answer was clearly that parents were hiring people to do these drives, but not paying them in a way that guaranteed the drivers would continue to show up. For example, the 20$/hr structure was often used. Well, if you are using a driver for 1/4 of an hour, you then pay the driver 5-10$, well that is not worth the drivers time to even get out of bed I learned. Our model is based on driver retention. I knew that meant changing the pay structure and doing so took a long time and a lot of work, but I finally was able to get it right. An amount that would retain drivers without requiring the astronomical incentives behind Uber and Lyft's profit woes. Kidcaboo now has a min. ride payment of 15$ for drives under a certain number of miles and time. It has been almost fully successful, with retention rates in the 90 percentile. We need about 1000 daily drives anywhere in the US to break even, not a high number for us. If you'd like more info than I'm providing publicly here, please feel free to email me at RLOCK@KIDCABOO.COM. 3) The plan is to follow (or likely exceed) our model getting us to 1B in annual revenue in selected large US metro areas and exit in around 5 years. I see no impediment to reaching that annual revenue amount or exceeding it. 4) We are raising 2M at this valuation cap in this SAFE round to give us 10 months of runway. Between now and that time, we should be launched in multiple new states, growth numbers will be proven in our full launch over a longer period and the valuation will be higher. We'll raise possibly a few million more at that higher valuation (hence why we're not raising more now), but expect to also hit our break even number around that time, which may affect how much needs to be raised. 5) I love working with and collaborating with other entrepreneurs and companies to a mutual benefit. My friend, Raven's company Earth Rides just raised on here. We've discussed a partnership possibility in the future. Many other companies have approached Kidcaboo as well. I have loved following Fetii's journey and think a partnership idea with them would be an awesome thing to explore. I'll reach out and appreciate the great contribution. You are fantastic and these questions are very helpful and insightful. I sincerely hope you'll invest and will always feel comfortable asking such questions and making such proposals. I genuinely appreciate it and feel the Kidcaboo family, you included, benefits from these things. That said, thanks again and excited for the prospect of you joining us if the investment is right for you. I love that. Our notable competitive advantage is something I realized was necessary and conceived of while doing 800 initial test rides to test the viability of this idea and our market. It is something almost no one (but our clients) sees, seems to put much value in or knows to look for, but it is singularly responsible for why we are essentially alone in our ability to scale B2C, whereas most similar companies say that doing so isn't possible and instead have gone B2B (partnering w/ schools, govt agencies, etc). Building a scalable kids' TNC is difficult, but it is possible possible. Doing it to scale B2C successfully is much more difficult. It is something we designed, perfected, honed and repeatedly practiced scaling and now do efficiently, consistently, cheaply and fast. To address your concern about a TNC company coming in, doing what we do and taking our market...this is a comment/question I received a lot in early VC meetings. Back then, I didn't fully understand all I do now and, frankly, also wondered if it was something I should worry about. I received that question during a cable news interview earlier today. Now, unlike three years ago, my answer to that question is informed and confident, and is that it is highly unlikely that would ever happen for innumerable reasons. We, Uber and Lyft are TNCs, but the commonalities largely end there. Our missions, priorities, focuses, growth plans and more are different. This is not their realm and I highly doubt they see benefit in making it their realm. Frankly, I think it's more likely care.com would try, but that's highly unlikely too and doesn't concern me either. I say that because I see now how hard it is to do this well and scale the process successfully. There is a huge difference between doing or building something, and doing or building it in a way that makes it successful. So while I understand the thought, I no longer see that as a concern or factor that is likely to significantly impact Kidcaboo. I do think it's conceivable such a TNC could see benefit at some point in acquiring a company who works with kids and that is successful at widely scaling B2C, but that's different than assuming they'd want to or choose to build it themselves. However, because one might argue that anything is possible, I'll explore a "what if" here. What is a large TNC for adults did do this against the odds? What does that mean for Kidcaboo? The children's transportation system has not been updated since the school bus was created. And while that worked for a few decades, it is increasingly defunct today. The children's transportation needs of modern families, in modern America have been ignored, creating a huge need and demand. Some of Kidcaboo's closest indirect competitors are serving great markets and demands as supplemental school transporters. But school transportation is only a fraction of all children's transportation needs today. And the available market involved when you accept that and go beyond school transportation, is exponentially (by tens of billions of dollars) larger than the market met only in connection with schools. Multiple companies could operate in the same market and still not come close to meeting demand fully. That is why, even if this against the odds did happen, I remain confident it would not impact our clients, success, growth and ability to reach an annual revenue of >1B. We have raised under three SAFES - 5M, 10M and 12M. The 12M SAFE was still open and there was room for more investment in that SAFE. When we heard interest from Wefunder investors to invest more before our upcoming priced round, we were happy and easily able to receive SEC approval to continue to raise under these terms. While there are many factors involved in valuation and it's very much based on market demand, an independent, third-party valuation has the pre-money valuation of the upcoming round at between 14.4M and 26M. An early investor recently received an offer (which he accepted) for his ownership in Kidcaboo. He had invested ~800K and received over 3M for that ownership. Given this and other factors, it seems the consensus is that the pre-money val of the upcoming round should fall between 18-21M.
