Something like a DCF model simply doesn't work. Our last venture capital round was done at a $5MM valuation in early 2014. This was a value not set by us, but by professional investors. In 2014 we did about $415,000 in revenue. This year we'll do nearly $800,000. That's almost double. Our growth rate is also going to be increasing going forward. So there's basis for arguing that a $7MM valuation is drastically under valuing the company at this point in time. Your question seems to be one asked often here on WeFunder. I think shows like SharkTank have greatly contributed to a misunderstanding of how early stage companies are valued. While SharkTank treats it as science, as you would a mature company, early stage company valuations are complete art. Investors on SharkTank no doubt know this, but they're out to make great TV, not realistic TV. Let me know if you need to me to expand on any of that. Our campaign is closing on Nov. 15th.","author_name":"Travis Biziorek","votes":0,"created_at":"2016-11-03T14:01:17Z"}]},{"id":6180,"entity_id":"wefunder:comment:6180","question":"Congratulations on creating such an interesting project. That said, it likely won't be for awhile. We have a lot of work and growth to do domestically in the US yet, and we've found that focusing on one market is the best way to grow fast. We plan on holding off on other languages until we're doing at least $5-$10 million in revenue per year. I'll be posting an update in early November regarding our recent progress. Things are looking fantastic, so we're excited to get our WeFunder backers fully on board soon. A few questions: 1) What is your customer acquisition cost? 2) Although your company has not been around too long, how long do you expect the average customer to be on your platform? This is more oriented for students, who obviously will move on from this product once they have finished their schooling, most likely at high school or their community college/college work. 3) Going from about $1MM in expected revenue this year to about $8MM in three years is very fast growth. How are you making those projections? Thanks.","author_name":"Sean Vadney","votes":0,"created_at":"2016-09-11T06:15:12Z","canonical_url":"https://wefunder.com/kibin#question-5441","answers":[{"id":5445,"entity_id":"wefunder:comment:5445","answer":"Hi Sean, thanks for the questions. The answers to your questions are a bit complex given we have two sets of customers (editing and essay database), and given the nature of our customer acquisition strategy in general. 1) We do very little paid acquisition. The little that we do is done via Google Adwords, and we only run these ads for our essay editing service (none for our essay examples database). When we acquire editing customers via Adwords our CAC is about $30/customer. That said, most of our essay editing customer find us via organic search. If you search \"essay editing\" or similar terms in Google you'll see us ranking generally in the #2 organic search spot. More than 90% of our essay editing customers find us via organic search, so our cost is essentially $0 per customer. When you look at the essay examples database customers the acquisition cost is a bit more complex. 100% of our customers on this side find us via organic search by typing in \"______(topic) essay examples\" or something similar. Ideally, one of our essays pop up in the search results, the student clicks through, browses our site, and some percent become customers. On the surface, the cost to acquire these customers appears to be $0, but there is an inherent cost in acquiring, screening, and processing essay content. This month (September) we'll spend about $10,000 acquiring new essays, screening and processing them. We'll acquire approximately 300 new EDB customers. It's easy to believe that our CAC is therefore ~$33 but that wouldn't tell the whole story. Last September we also spent approximately $10,000 acquiring, screening and processing new essay content. However, we only acquired 123 new EDB customers. The thing to recognize here is that essays that we add to the database today don't start acquiring customers for us until a ways into the future. So at this point it's extremely difficult for us to know what exactly our CAC is on this side of the business. That said, we do know that it continues to decrease because once we add new essays to the database they will always be acquiring new customers for us. They never go stale or stop \"working\". That's a huge advantage. 2) We don't look so much at time on our platform as much as lifetime value (LTV). Our essay editing customers have an LTV of about $200. Our EDB customers have an LTV of approximately $125, although this side of the business is less mature. There's definitely room to optimize both of these numbers further, and we have plans to do so in the near future. 3) I understand the growth seems aggressive, but we're simply looking to approximately double our revenue each year for the next few years (and perhaps beyond). That may still sound aggressive, but I assure you it is achievable. If you're interested, take a look at this interview with the CEO of one of our competitors: http://www.sramanamitra.com/2014/03/07/student-entrepreneur-to-10m-business-blaine-vess-ceo-of-studymode-part-1/ He details how they simply started doubling each year provided they continued to add new essay content. I'd also invite you to take a close look at two of our investors/advisors: Rob Angarita and Aaron Hawkey who started a company called Cramster in the past and later sold to Chegg (now branded Chegg Study). Course Hero is another company that operates under a similar model, and there's an interview with their CEO here: http://www.sramanamitra.com/2014/04/23/student-entrepreneur-to-10m-in-revenue-without-dropping-out-course-hero-ceo-andrew-grauer-part-1/ Although Cramster and Course Hero are slightly different in their service than Kibin, the model is the same: Study materials designed to acquire customers via long-tail organic search. So the businesses grow at similar rates. Our projections are also based on how many essays we have in our database and how much traffic we'll receive from those essays (given historical data from last year). We then multiply this by a conversion rate (again, from last year's data) to determine how many customers we'll acquire each month. We're starting to get a good grip on our churn rate (how soon customers cancel subscriptions), too. When you put this all together it allows us to really start being able to predict our future growth trajectory. I know that was a very long answer, but I hope it was helpful. Please feel free to ask more questions if I overlooked something.","author_name":"Travis Biziorek","votes":0,"created_at":"2016-09-11T15:31:13Z"}]},{"id":4983,"entity_id":"wefunder:comment:4983","question":"I can understand how educational articles help writing essays, as well as studying examples of good/bad essays. However, using editorial services seem like cheating to me. It means I don't have to proof-read my essay much or worry about phrasing things - I just dump my thoughts out and let the editor make it pretty. Besides, the essay database adds another temptation (especially as it grows) - one can just find 3-4 essays on the same topic and then compile them together into my \"original\" essay... I know that's what will happen because I've done it myself and witnessed other students do the same. What do you think of moral and educational implications of your business?","author_name":"Alex K","votes":0,"created_at":"2016-08-14T05:20:44Z","canonical_url":"https://wefunder.com/kibin#question-4983","answers":[{"id":5012,"entity_id":"wefunder:comment:5012","answer":"Hi Alex, thanks for your question and concerns. The editing service, in my opinion, has much less risk for abuse than our examples database. Our editors are essentially much more akin to a writing tutor. Yes, they leave corrections, but they explain them and leave comments and feedback too. At the end of the day, you have to go through the changes, review them, and ultimately decide to accept or reject them in track changes. So dumping one's thoughts out and expecting the editor to make it pretty... well, that just doesn't happen. If you're interested in trying out the editing service and getting a feel for that experience, let me know. I'll hook you up with some free credits so you can test drive it. The examples database could be abused, but it's a bit foolish to believe you could pass off one of the essays as one's own work. They are indexed via Google so it'd be easily caught for plagiarism. But I understand most students are a bit more savvy than that and would piece together an essay from multiple examples. In terms of how we can combat that... it's admittedly difficult. Some students are going to abuse the examples, but we've found that the vast majority don't. In short, I strongly believe that being able to see and access examples of other students' work does far more to benefit education than it does to hinder it. Our experience growing Kibin has confirmed that.","author_name":"Travis Biziorek","votes":0,"created_at":"2016-08-15T18:14:22Z"}]},{"id":4748,"entity_id":"wefunder:comment:4748","question":"I suppose I don't understand how more essays directly translates into additional EDB revenue. It's slide #6 and has the title \"Ultimately, growth is driven by adding more essays to our database\". The more essays we have, the more opportunities we have to show up in Google search results. Think of it like Wikipedia. The site is successful because it has high-quality content, but it also has a TON of content. But if you were researching something and Wikipedia didn't have any information on that subject, the site obviously wouldn't show up in your search results. That's how our research database works, but for essay topics. If we don't have an essay on the topic you're searching for (and there are a ton of essay topics), we have zero chance of showing up in the search results and zero chance of you landing on our site. That also means you don't have the chance of becoming a customer. So you can see why more essays equates to more traffic. The more traffic we generate, the more customers we'll acquire. EDB customers pay on a monthly or annual basis, not per essay. Students can upload 10 essays and, if approved, receive 7 days of free access to our essay examples database (EDB). But we also acquire essays by purchasing them directly from students. Most students are happy to sell us their old essays for a couple dollars each. We've found this channel to be the most scaleable and this is where we'd be using the capital we raise here on WeFunder. Hope that helps!"},{"question":"How do you explain a $7 million valuation?","answer":"Hi Fahad, we're on track to do nearly $1MM in revenue this year. But looking beyond that, our essay examples database revenue is growing at an extremely impressive clip of over 400% yeer-over-year. We then immediately cancel the job and refund the customer's payment. Our culture is to always be helpful. We screen prospective editors for their ability to be writing tutors first, and technical editors second. We're known for the amount of comm..."},{"question":"A couple of questions. Are you charging your current EDB customers on a per essay basis? Or are you expecting a growth in EDB customers directly proportional to growth in EDB size?","answer":"Hi Eric, the answer lies in the slide/image we have in the investor presentation with the arrows. It's slide #6 and has the title \"Ultimately, growth is driven by adding more essays to our database\". The more essays we have, the more opportunities we have to show up in Google search results.
