I am Seung Kwon Kim, born in South Korea, raised in America. Who I am lies between those two masses of land, separated by a vast ocean. As much as I am American, I also am not.As I grew up in colonial Concord, Massachusetts, I began to realize a fact that I had grew obliviously accustomed to — that I was one of only a few Asian-Americans in a near 20-mile radius. In this racial isolation, I tried everything I could to pass as white; I learned their slang, copied the way they dressed and sauntered down the halls. I never brought home friends, never called my parents in public, and legally changed the name given to me by my grandparents. I gave up my language, my heritage, my birthright. I truly believed that if I tried hard enough, I could become one of “them” — a blue-eyed, white-skinned American. Except that I wasn’t, and could never be. I loathed who I was and what my parents burdened me with. No matter how hard I worked, studied their mannerisms, or followed the rules, I could never be quite as American as they; it seemed that the American Dream was only a success story for those who have already succeeded.ISLE CHILD is about the universal foreigners experience, told from the POV of a transracial adoptee.Watch our proof-of-concept short film now on MAX or here:SYNOPSIS FOR ISLE CHILD - THE MOVIECHARACTERSLOCATIONSCINEMATOGRAPHYFINANCIAL PLANA Study: UCLA’s renowned Hollywood Report found that “big-budget films lacking in diversity make about $27 million less on their opening weekend, with a potential loss of $130 million in total\". This also applied to independent films, \"regardless of its critical acclaim\". Another Forbes article found that Asian-American spending power is over $1.2 trillion, projected to $1.6 by 2024. 82% of AAPI households subscribe to one or more streaming service as compared to 72% of the total population. TLDR? Authentic diversity sells, today more than ever.SI (also embedded at the top of the page): https://vimeo.com/358425895OUR BUSINESS PLANOur financing will go entirely towards the production of this feature film; our location rentals, our crew, and our cast. We make our income from cutting deals with domestic and international distributors for Theatrical, Digital, and Blu-Ray releases. However, as stated, we receive zero payment as creators from this WeFunder raise as our contracts are organized to give our investors privileged returns so that you see your complete ROI before we see a dollar. And as mentioned in the FINANCING slideshow above, you the investor, will make back 125% of your initial investment (130% for Early Bird Investors) PLUS 36% of Net Profits. Investing in this WeFunder means investing in our company, Red Bean Pastry LLC. This will be the first installment of future Film + TV projects that you and the company will own as part of Isle Child Franchise and all of our investors will receive income on all future Isle Child projects. In the event of coming in under budget, those remaining funds will roll entirely into the digital marketing of the film, to get as many eyeballs on the movie as possible.Once the film is completed, we will submit to the top film festivals with our personal connections to programmers (at Sundance, SXSW, Cannes, etc). Then, we will aggressively pursue top end distribution by packaging the film at the highest level agencies, distributors, and sales companies, like A24, Neon, IFC Films, Endeavor Content, UTA, CAA, and APA. Should we sign with one of these companies, we will create and launch a distribution strategy including top film markets. We'll also consider self-distribution with our renowned EP, Jim Cummings, who recently raised $350k on WeFunder for The Beta Test and self-distributed Thunder Road, making over $400k in the first year alone, doubling its budget in ticket sales during its first two weeks in French cinemas after winning the SXSW Grand Jury Prize and screening at the worlds biggest Cannes Film Festival.ISLE CHILD has built in leverage for the Sundance Film Festival as the project is backed by the Institute through writer/director Thomas, who was a Sundance Fellow.FOSTERING COMMUNITYWith WeFunder, we first wanted to bring this film to the people that it represents — namely, the neighboring communities of Concord, Massachusetts, Asian-Americans, and adoptees. With ISLE CHILD, we hope to foster a family that represents the voices of those who normally wouldn't have a seat at the Hollywood table... not only creatively, but financially as well. The story for SI, the proof of concept short film, was first conceived from conversation with one of my hometown best friends who is a Korean-American adoptee. He is and will continue to be tightly integrated in the film process, from development to picture lock. Like my friend, there are many consultants that have been involved in the development of the film that are also Korean-American adoptees, and we've dedicated a portion of the funds and equity to these transracial adoptee writers and organizations (on top of the Korean-American adoptees that we've pledged to hire as part of our cast and crew down the line). We want to prioritize their paid involvement to ensure that we include them into our community and capture the complexities of their experience with the utmost sensitivity and diligence that it deserves. I too have questions about the equity piece: 1. If it's equity, then you could take revenue from the first movie and move it to subsequent projects, meaning that investors would not receive a return on equity based on this first movie but rather (and only) down the line when the company decides to stop rolling revenue into new projects? 2. Along the same lines, could there be future dilution - for example, I invest in this film, I get my 125%, but then you do another round to cover the costs of a sequel so my equity position is now shared with a larger group of investors? Thanks!","author_name":"Alan Jacobson","votes":1,"created_at":"2022-09-02T16:44:57Z","canonical_url":"https://wefunder.com/islechild#question-217459","answers":[{"id":217602,"entity_id":"wefunder:comment:217602","answer":"Hi Alan! Thomas here. Great question! 1. Our contract doesn't carve out derivative properties from the company ownership. If we made a sequel or TV show, then we'd have to license it from the WeFunder LLC. So any revenue would be first funneled to investors until 125% ROI, and then filmmakers and whoever else owns equity. 2. Yes, if we do increase the gross budget amount that investors are contributing to then shares would get diluted. However, that’s something that we’re talking with outside investors and companies right now to hopefully mitigate that from happening. Our total budget is 700-900K, so when we bring on outside investors (reg D raise 1 month after closing WeFunder), we’d most likely be just selling our own shares on the same WeFunder terms to get to our budget number. Hope that addresses your concerns; happy to answer anything else! -T","author_name":"Thomas Percy Kim","votes":0,"created_at":"2022-09-03T17:43:02Z"}]},{"id":212290,"entity_id":"wefunder:comment:212290","question":"Thank you for the quick response! Yes, the residual stream is 30% of Net Profits, not gross revenues. After release, the company will have ongoing expenses that will be subtracted from the gross, but these costs will be VERY minimal. For example, our yearly LLC fee for the state of Delaware is $300/year, and any foreign subtitle translations can cost around $350. Things like festival fees and anything that can be pre-factored into the budget itself will be done so without pulling expenses from the residual stream. Some sleazy founders will make up things like an \"editing salary\" to pay themselves outside from their budget, but unlike them, rest assured in good faith that our ongoing expenses will be extremely minimal as outlined above. For context, our EP, Jim C, has just gone through this on wefunder with his film, The Beta Test, and have not receipted much expenses beyond negligible costs like the aforementioned LLC and translation fees — even years after launching his wefunder in 2019 and returning ROI to investors in less than 2 years. Great question — yes, you're correct — since we're selling 30% of our company (the film's LLC) for $350K, that means that our valuation is ~$1.1 million. So a little less than a ~$12K investment takes 1% of the company. And similarly, a ~$1200 investment takes 0.1%. That is the 30% net equity mentioned in the terms. So, for example, any money the film makes first gets distributed to WeFunder investors until they make back 125% of their initial investment (ie, $12K investment gets $15K). Once that is returned, further funds will be distributed to investors based on their equity size (ie, $12K investment makes $15K ROI, THEN 1% of all future revenue the film makes). Investors will indefinitely collect this equity revenue from the film and from the company LLC. We're currently getting our official agreement documents ready as our filing state, Delaware, has been extremely backed up with LLC formations lately. But we've gotten our papers back a few weeks ago and rushing to get our finances checked and Form C filed, after which, we can send out our official agreement sheet. So we'll have that ready for investors soon! -T","author_name":"Thomas Percy Kim","votes":0,"created_at":"2022-07-21T20:40:41Z"}]},{"id":211682,"entity_id":"wefunder:comment:211682","question":"Hello , hope all is well ! will this Offering close exactly at a goal of 250K ? or 350K ?","author_name":"Gregory Montgomery","votes":1,"created_at":"2022-07-14T23:17:30Z","canonical_url":"https://wefunder.com/islechild#question-211682","answers":[{"id":212013,"entity_id":"wefunder:comment:212013","answer":"Hi Greg! Our CPA accountant is currently reviewing our operating agreement paperwork (standard procedure after a company hits the $50k mark on WeFunder) and will hopefully be relinked at the bottom of our campaign page soon. But to explain it in simpler terms here, our return on investment (with current Early Bird perks) is 130% plus equity, for example, for $400 you’ll get a return of $520, and once that is met, you’ll receive checks for your percentage of the company in perpetuity. Our 10K investors own 1% of the company, so they’ll make $13,000 and then receive 1% of the revenue of the company after that. With our “Privileged Return” waterfall agreement, our team won’t see a dollar until all of our WeFunder investors first receive their FULL 130% return on initial investment. A smaller investment would mean a smaller profit, yes, but it's also an ongoing return for the rest of your life. Our terms are 125% ROI + 30% Net Equity, so in simpler words, a $100 investment would mean $125+a fraction of a percentage of every dollar that the film makes in revenue. And a film can have many \"lives\", especially if the filmmaker continues to make movies that rise in popularity, ie Bluray re-releases, special editions, reboots, etc. Any investor now would continue making profit off of those sales forever since it's all incorporated under the same LLC.
