I've got MacGyver skills, more so when it comes to construction.
My biggest challenge...
Getting a team together. Crowds generally make better decisions than individual “experts” and I believe a crowd of “experts” provides the best of both worlds. I’m continuously looking for collaborators and partners. I play well on a team, but I’m not great at organizing them.
I want to invest in...
I like to invest in information-centric companies that follow principles of Greenenomics (TM).
Information is a unique resource. Burn a lump of coal, the coal is gone (but for the CO2). Information does not deplete; it accumulates. Combine information (a) (how to tap a rubber tree) with information (b) (how to apply sulfur and heat to vulcanize rubber), we retain the agricultural know-how (a) and the chemical formula (b) but we now also have usable tires to pedal on. Information accumulation effects are profound and will be increasing so over time.
Even in our extraction-based economy, information-focused companies significantly outperform the market and will increasingly do so as information accumulates.
I can be most helpful at...
I’m a cross-disciplinary thinker with technology, legal/regulatory, marketing, micro-economic, and business expertise. Too often, people excel at their specialty but don’t get how that fits together in the real world.
I love team and try to help drive decisions by helping the team prioritize the necessary over the inconsequential, the “needed now” from the “can be put off”. I’m all for openly airing the issues and collectively resolving them with no pride of invention nor authorship.
I think we can fix America by...
Our Founders gave us what we need; we just need to apply it. “We are all created equal,” yet for 400 years we forcibly imported, enslaved, and still oppress people from Africa. For even longer, we’ve subjugated women. We must level the complete playing field and treat everyone equally. Let’s tap each individual’s strengths, not limit them for perceived differences.
Open Source Government. We are responsible for our republic’s success. “Truth emerges in the marketplace of ideas,” but the marketplace can’t be rigged. Who is paying how much to say what to whom? We can ‘nanny-cam’ congress. We can require speakers and their funders to self-identify. We can adopt Rank Choice Voting to end the “divide and conquer” scourge.
My most influential mentor is...
Let’s start with Henry Geller, the first head of NTIA. Henry transcended partisanship, funded by both the Aspen and American Enterprise Institutes. Henry made me his assistant, made Dale Hatfield hire me which led to my decades’ long admiration of and friendship with Dale, and first taught me @UPenn. Next, Don Cox who ran the wireless research program @Bellcore. When I first got there, I knew about the FCC (thanks to Henry and to Charlie Ferris) but not about telecom engineering. I knew spectrum economics, but not RF. Through Don et al, I learned the engineering behind my industry. Above all, my father; “Dr. Buddy” taught me to focus on what’s important, to put doing good above doing well, and to speak the truth - especially to power.

Curious how well the companies have done? Or how many raised follow-on financing?
Some fine print: 1) These numbers include startups currently live on Wefunder if they pass their minimum target. 2) Some startups use two different laws at the same time (i.e., Regulation D and Regulation Crowdfunding).
