From my research, it seems like a streaming distributor will likely pay a lump sum to license the film for a period of years with no profit participation. Then, when the contract lapses, we'll be able to sell the rights to another distributor for the next period of time. That sounds like what I hear people saying, but I'm excited to find out first hand. I know Jake a bit and I invested knowing this will be great from conversations and seeing him work. Horror is not my favourite genre and my opinions on what makes a great horror will not be nearly as good as Jake's will be, that might be different for you or other investors. With the needs to plan out the filming and have stuff ready it might also be hard to do that once things get rolling. I think the tried and true preview towards the end with comments might be a better way to fine tune things then polls. That is my opinion though. Patreon might be a good way to build interest, I think having perks like t-shirts, posters, DVDs, or even behind the scenes might be a good way to involve people. I'm not sure if this or something like indiegogo would be better. There's a lot to like here, including your experience, the well mapped-out plan, and the genre. I have some questions: 1. Is there a developed script, and even if it has not been formally covered, has it been reviewed in any way? 2. You mention casting YouTubers with massive followings but I don't see anything about that in the main presentation - can you say more, including any info (even without names) of any of them that have committed? 3. Finally, I worry a little about seasonal films - I know that horror can plan year-round but this seems like it will resonate more during Halloween. Do you think that will limit things at all? I've submitted it for coverage on The Blacklist industry professional reading services and it received an elusive 8 out of 10, which made me very happy. They also tweeted out a recommendation that others should check it out, which was very nice of them. 2: No problem. The YouTubers are my friends Rob and Craig who you meet in the pitch video. Rob has a subscriber base of over 2 million and Craig has a subscriber base of over 1 million. You should definitely check out their channels, they're extremely talented and engaging. 3: I love this question and I've thought about it a lot. I feel that in the streaming era, where there's an endless sea of content, the best path to relevance is not only to appeal to a specific genre audience but to also drill down into a very specific recurring era of desire for rewatchablility. When people sit down to find something to watch, it's usually brand new. For older movies, it's either something they've seen before or something the algorithm determined appeals to the culture at this specific time, and therefore it's zeitgeisty enough to catch their attention. A Halloween season slasher film not only catches people the first year it arrives. It has an annually demanded recurrence in the marketplace. For the Halloween crowd, if something feels like the season to them it BECOMES a part of their season every year. It becomes a tradition. And as it does, it'll show up on the \"Halloween movies\" search every year and pull in new people looking for something that feels like the season. I know because this is me and it's all over my Twitter feed as soon as we hit mid-August. Every year I watch Hocus Pocus and Halloween III (or Halloween H20) and The Guest and Trick 'r Treat because they all make me feel grounded in the season. I think designing our movie this way is the opposite of limiting. It's investing in becoming a tradition. We make the movie with the money invested and then a domestic distributor acquires the rights to it by licensing the film for a certain amount of time. That money goes first to reimbursing investors at 120% their investment. So say someone invests $100, they would get $120 dollars. After the 120% investment is recouped the remaining net profits of the acquisition are split 50/50 by the investors and the production company for as long as the film continues to get licensed. There's also a separate revenue stream for international distribution which requires a separate licensing agreement. At the end of the day, they would still decide if the feedback they receive is valuable or not, but crowdsourcing opinions and ideas has been an extremely valuable asset in my own experience. It helps fine-tune a project to make it go from great to excellent. And the thing is, at the end of the day, that feedback ‘will’ come one way or another – it’ll just come in the form of potentially ‘critical reviews’ and possibly lower ratings/views, or possibly fewer licensing opportunities, if such feedback isn’t sought after beforehand. I’ve certainly found this out the hard way. And the problem with only seeking out feedback after all the footage has been shot, is that, if the feedback ends up being ‘this one particular actor or scene is really bringing down the film,’ or if the feedback is 'this one particular back-and-forth of dialogue sounds extremely unnatural in this situation,' then there’s not much they can do about it at that point in the process. Doubtful a complete reshoot of certain scenes would be feasible. That’s just an example. Of course, Jake and them are going to do things however they want either way, and I’ll still be here for it. Just voicing some thoughts and additional ideas before things get started. (Also, I realize this Question Section wasn’t really designed for back-and-forth responses like this, so I’ll probably let this be my last comment. I just didn’t want to be misunderstood, is all. I believe you answered most of my questions, and I’m really happy to hear about the overall approach you plan to take. I know you also have another producer and director helping out with this project, and I’m sure the three of you have a solid vision. Part of me wants to be as involved as you’d be okay with (I have no problem traveling to see who is being cast, and would love to sign an NDA agreement to be able to see the script and possibly provide ‘completely optional’ feedback), but the other part of me doesn’t want to step on anyone’s toes, since I know what it’s like to get unsolicited feedback from others (I’m very used to it at this point, but it was difficult when I first started writing). Based on Power Squadron, I feel confident that your technical skills are on par with the best, with later episodes showing a lot of talent (like the scene where you explode through the ceiling – that was as good as any traditional multi-million dollar budget movie). I think one of the most powerful tools you could use is getting as many opinions as possible from those who have an invested interest in this film doing well. For example, even with the ‘grain’ in post-production you mentioned, it might be a good idea to have 2 trailers, one with and one without the grain, and take a vote from investors (with ‘either is fine’ also being an option), just to gauge whether the vast majority are going to like it (of course, even if everyone votes one way, you could still do whatever you wanted, but might be good to get that general consensus). I regularly use polls on Patreon to get feedback, and they’ve made my stories better. Speaking of Patreon, you could use that platform as 1) an extra way to raise funds, and 2) a method to get feedback from those who maybe can’t afford a big investment, but who would be willing to put forth $10 or $20 per month. I actually have two Patreons for two different names I write under (including my real name), and between the two of them, I pull in a lot on a regular basis (more than I’ve invested in this project, which was limited by this websites rules for investment amounts). Just a thought to consider. You could make a Patreon specifically for this film, and those people could ‘support it’ without having ‘investor rights’ (maybe a name-mention in credits only). I feel like with your extensive social media presence and connections, you could have a solid Patreon running by June 1, possibly with 5 tiers of $2, $5, $10, $20, $50 (too many choices will cause choice paralysis, so 5 options should probably be the limit), and be bringing in a significant amount fairly quickly. Probably $2, $5, $10 would be ‘I just want to support’ whereas $20 and $50 could be perks like ‘name in credits as Patreon supporter.’ All tiers could get monthly updates on things like ‘script is being finalized’ or whatever step the project is in. Could also run regular polls to get opinions on various artistic subjects (do like this in your horror movies?). Anyway, with the technical skills of this team being great, my only concern is going to be dialogue and casting. Even just one actor who performs poorly can ruin a film (just recently watched a movie on Amazon Prime with my wife, and we were both cringing at one of the actress’s performance). I narrate audiobooks a little too, and have thus devoted a lot of time to understanding the difference between ‘acting’ and ‘being’ a character, and I feel pretty confident that I could take any person off the street and teach them how to be believable and organic – I’ve tested this out with friends and turned ‘canned/stilted’ individuals into ‘method acting’ pros fairly quickly (hence, my interest in showing up to the casting and offering my opinion if its wanted). Biggest thing is if you aren’t truly ‘fantasizing about this situation being real’ and if you aren’t truly ‘feeling sincere emotion,’ then it will absolutely come off as stilted. Although, saying that isn’t often enough for most. With me ‘showing them’ the difference, and giving tips as they try to mimic it, that goes a long way. At the end of the day, what I’m trying to say is that I am happy to be a resource if you’re interested, even just an extra person to bounce ideas off in relation to the script, plot, etc. Not only do I have over 15 published books, all of which have great ratings on Amazon, but I also have an MBA (not trying to toot my own horn, but just explaining why I view myself as a decent resource). Alternatively, if you feel like you have things covered that’s fine too. Ultimately, with technical skills being great, the biggest thing that will make or break this is going to be the actor performances (in a book, characters are king, and in a movie, believable acting is king). Really looking forward to being a part of this, and feel free to take any of my thoughts with a grain of salt. Thanks!","author_name":"Kurtis Eckstein","votes":0,"created_at":"2022-05-20T13:51:48Z","canonical_url":"https://wefunder.com/first.fright.llc#question-205773","answers":[{"id":205853,"entity_id":"wefunder:comment:205853","answer":"I really appreciate how invested you are in the performance aspect of this movie. I personally am by no means an expert on filmography, and wouldn't even be able to say for sure why it gives off that impression, other than some of the intentional exaggeration for the humor, and possibly some of the lacking emotions from 'some' of the characters, who don't seem very engaged (almost chill, calm, relaxed) despite the danger -- kind of the difference between 'acting' vs 'being' the character. However, that being said, what style is going to be used for this film? Do you have an example, or can you eventually produce a short example of what the film will be like, in terms of production quality (including resolution and such)? Movies like Cloverfield and certain other horror films embrace the 'homemade film' style to their great benefit and success. In some ways, it can make it more terrifying when it feels like one person (or possible a handful of people) are making recordings on their phone(s), and it's been stitched together to tell a cohesive narrative from different perspectives (possibly even a mix of that, with standard filmography, switching between phone recorded videos and the regular perspective). Alternatively, there are perks to aiming for a more standard methods, but either way, 'being in character' and the overall believable acting will be extremely important, since many viewers can smell canned lines and lackluster emotion from a mile away. All that being said, I am not aiming to offer any unsolicited advice, but instead am just curious to get a better idea of what the final project will look like. Is this possibly something that will come at a later date, before the Director's Cut is due? (like a short 30 sec trailer, or something similar) Thanks! EDIT: To explain what I mean about the homemade thing, when watching Rob Scallon videos it feels real and organic (likely because the interview with Michael Angelo Batio, as an example, isn't scripted and so the dialogue comes off naturally -- he is 'being' the character instead acting like a character). If someone jumped out and scared him in a costume, I'd expect a real sincere scream, and then maybe disbelief as he's like \"Are you serious right now? Who is this guy?\" and then possibly sincere fear as he's being approached by a guy with a weapon. Rob's laughs are organic, his questions have sincere inflection (instead of sounding monotone and canned from a script). But of course, all that is going to depend on the actors, and how believable the fear, reactions, and dialogue all are is going to depend on their ability and experience. I will say that you are pretty believable (assuming I have my characters right -- I think the blonde guy is you) in Power Squadron, although I'm not sure if you plan on starring in this film or not.","author_name":"Kurtis Eckstein","votes":0,"created_at":"2022-05-19T18:15:36Z","canonical_url":"https://wefunder.com/first.fright.llc#question-205647","answers":[{"id":205741,"entity_id":"wefunder:comment:205741","answer":"I LOVE this question. This is a very different beast than Platoon of Power Squadron on every level. Some of the characters' conversational styles might feel kind of similar, but the performance style is going to be totally grounded. Too many indie horror movies try to intentionally create a camp factor through exaggerated character performances and I always find that really distancing. In Spook House everyone is going to play it totally real. The slasher situation and haunt atmosphere are heightened enough as it is. And, much like Batio and Scallon, they're going to be people talking about with they love and that's going to shine through. I love that you saw that video. MAB and Rob are so infectious when they get going. I've just begun accepting casting submissions and every actor that writes a cover letter talks about how much they love Halloween and haunts. So even as they perform, the affection will be genuine. As for the Cloverfield found footage style, we're going to be approaching from a more classical filmmaking approach with wide lenses and a steadicam feel. And a lot of PoPS felt super homemade because we decided to shoot it handheld and we had super consumer-grade equipment for much of it. Spook House will be shot in crystal clear 4K in ProRes RAW, but the director of photography and I have discussed adding a little grain in post because we grew up watching film and we think it's pretty. I aim to keep everybody up to date on the production and post-process, an early look at a trailer will definitely be a part of that. I also aim to have a cast and crew screening before submitting out to festivals and any investors that want to fly themselves out to that will be welcome as well. You all are the ULTIMATE crew. The crew that gets the cast and crew paid. Also, I am the blonde guy, and I do not intend to act in Spook House. Maybe a cameo standing in the haunt line or something, but nothing with lines.
