For those of you who are new here, I wanted to get you up to speed on how our aircraft are powered. Investors often ask how we compare to the many battery-powered electric vertical take off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft being developed by other companies. While we are certainly in favor of climate-friendly energy, we are also realistic about the current limitations. That’s why we built our Fluidic Propulsive System® (FPS®) to adapt to any energy source. ⚡️FPS thrusters run on compressed air. A compressor (you may call it a turbofan of specific capabilities) produces that air, and either a turbine or an electric motor can drive the compressor. Because the energy source sits upstream of the thrusters, changing it requires no change to the thrusters. Today a turbine drives the compressor on jet fuel or diesel, and our passenger aircraft are designed for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) as well. Tomorrow we could swap that design out for an electric motor.Fuel is the right choice today because it holds far more energy for its weight than batteries. A kilogram of jet fuel delivers more than 50 times the usable energy of a kilogram of modern lithium-ion batteries, 21 times if you consider its conversion to actual propulsion. Simply put, jet fuel currently enables us to offer a far greater range on our aircraft.Batteries (and other energy sources) continue to improve and we can use them when they make sense, but they will always add weight to the aircraft, a weight that is staying with the aircraft from take off to landing. Using a fuel like SAF is not only climate friendly, but allows the aircraft to fly more efficiently as the fuel is used up, extending the range in a significant manner, allowing faster speeds and landing with a lighter weight. Every advance in fuel or energy storage can become an upgrade in our next aircraft while our timeline is not dependent on developing energy technologies. Our round is filling up fast.
